Different Christmas decor taste to partner ..

wonder456 · 12/12/2025 12:42

Sorry if this is a lame question in advance!

My partner told me to take care of the Christmas decorations but then when I bought them.. I'm an argument he told me that they are everything that he hates... he likes classic and I like kitsch..

Now I need to buy lights for the front of the house - the ones I want to get are multicoloured... is it selfish of me to buy the ones I like knowing he probably won't be keen and would prefer plain?? Would you get the ones you like?

It depends how much you like your partner. I’m in the sort of relationship where I wouldn’t do something if I knew that my partner really wouldn’t like it.

DinoLil · 12/12/2025 12:56

I'd tell him to buy them himself if he's that bothered.

Upsetbetty · 12/12/2025 12:56

There’s a compromise to be had here surely?!

If he’d told me to do something and then criticised the way I’d done it, I’d tell him to do it himself.

You don’t need outside lights, IMO.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2025 13:00

Maybe if they’re likely to be a bone of contention it’d be better to not bother - no one actually needs lights. Do whatever will bring you, collectively, seasonal joy not annoyance.

BeforeSigourneyWeaverTheyWoveTheirOwnSigourneys · 12/12/2025 13:01

He told you to take care of the decorations and then had a go because they weren't to his taste?

I would tell him to buy the outside lights and put them up. I would also be telling him not to delegate jobs to me and then criticise the way I do them.

TinselTitts · 12/12/2025 13:01

Oh he 'told' you did he? 🤣

I'd be telling him to do it himself, or put the fuck up with it.

Mindgardner · 12/12/2025 13:01

We did year about tasteful/tacky till I, tasteful, gave up!

Orangepate · 12/12/2025 13:03

I honestly can’t imagine being with a man who would give a fuck about this… Mine the tree together, wouldn’t care if I hung snails and arseholes on it afterwards.

SunnyViper · 12/12/2025 13:05

We have a mix. The outside of the house is quite classic and then gets more whacky the further you go into the house. Starts with warm white, then into a bit of colour and ands in neon😂. I moved in with my partner over summer so we have two sets of decorations so we have 4 trees up and lights in every room 😂

Thundertoast · 12/12/2025 13:36

Surely this is easy - you have a mix of what you both like?

wonder456 · 12/12/2025 13:57

Thankyou everyone!!! And hahahaha LOL to snails and aseholes @Orangepate😂

My hub likes trashy cheap, go to town Dec's. I like tasteful with a bit of.whimsy.
Dh has his own tree in the porch and can put tinsel in there is how we compromised 🤣

MarbleDrive · 12/12/2025 14:01

You sound deeply incompatible.

I couldn’t stand tasteless kitsch. And I be mortified if the outside of the house had anything naff.

My husband is largely clueless on such matters, so he’d not dare to make a suggestion.

KilkennyCats · 12/12/2025 14:02

You don’t need outside lights of any description.
Unless you live in the middle of nowhere; your neighbours are the ones who have to look at them, not you.

KilkennyCats · 12/12/2025 14:04

Btw, “kitsch” decorations sound shit, sorry.
Maybe he has a point.

JudgeBread · 12/12/2025 14:04

You're arguing about Christmas decorations.

Not sure the lights are really your biggest issue.

ChubbyPuffling · 12/12/2025 14:08

Dh and I have opposite tastes. We meet in the middle.

One tree outside has coloured lights (my choice) the other has warm white. The main room has a tree, tastefully done in reds and golds... except for the side near my chair which is elf vomit worthy.

I bought a wreath made of baubles for the living room wall... gold, teal, fuchsia pink, purple and red... colourful.
Dh got one for the front door, greenery, red berries, big red bow...

We both tut and smile. Everyone finds it amusing, the kids talk about mums ornaments, and dad's...

ItsNotMeEither · 12/12/2025 15:06

Not really the question you asked, but we have two trees. Not because we disagree, I picked the decorations for both. One has a lovely colour theme, then we have another that is traditional, because I like that too. They’re in different rooms of the house.

Unnecessary

BillyBites · 12/12/2025 15:13

@Poorly3yrold The PORCH? So, what, you mean his tacky tree is the first thing visitors and passersby see?
You dropped the ball there, I think!

LadyDanburysHat · 12/12/2025 15:33

He told you to sort it then complained, tell him to gtf

ThatGreenFawn · 12/12/2025 18:56

Everyone in our house has their own tree to decorate how they like.

DappledThings · 12/12/2025 18:59

Kitsch and classic sound like the same thing to me. I have lots of tinsel and coloured lights. A classic tree but could he described as kitsch. All white and matching decorations is much more modern I think.
