And more importantly, will it feature yorkshire puddings?
We are having a rib of beef, so YPs will definitely feature.
Work colleagues are currently having a debate whether YPs should be a part of a traditional turkey Christmas roast or not.
(My take is have what you want!)

No starter the only 3 certainties are that there’ll be turkey, ham and Yorkshire puddings the rest is dependant on what takes my fancy when I do the shopping.

Dd is veggies so yorkies are an important part of her meal… even if she wasn’t though, why wouldn’t you? Yorkshire puddings are amazing

HeartyStork · 08/12/2025 21:42

No Christmas Dinner at my house this year. We're doing a buffet, but if we were it would consist of
Beef, Chicken and Pork with a Small Turkey Crown.
Roasties
Mash
Piggies
Stuffing
Carrots
Swede
Broccoli
Cauli
Green Beans
Brussels
Parsnips
And of Course YP's have them with every roast as they are my favourite.
Pudding would be
Cheesecake
Double Choc Gateaux and
Treacle Sponge.

We went out and had our Christmas dinner on Saturday and it was wonderful to not have to pay the over inflated prices and no washing up 🙈 there was 15 of us.

Lunch is smoked salmon starter with capers and pickled red onion on bagel crisps.
then surf and turf which is eye fillet topped with sautéed prawns and hollandaise with roast potatoes and watermelon feta salad.
pavlova with cream and tropical fruits for dessert.
can you tell it’s an Australian Christmas?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 08/12/2025 20:06

YPs - yes with beef, not with anything else. There have to be rules or society breaks down. The rule is bread sauce with Turkey.

We have trad turkey roast - turkey, roast ps, stuffing, pigs in blankets, carrots, sprouts, parsnips, bread sauce, gravy, cranbury sauce (which no one eats) mustard (which I eat). This not include cauli cheese because clearly cheese with a roast is madness. Or red cabbage because I don't like it and we never had it as kids. Nor mashed pots because it's not thanksgiving and nothing - nothing - should be allowed in the way of roasties.

No first course - because I want as many helpings of C'mas dinner as poss.

sometime later - Christmas pudding (which I don't think anyone much likes so we have a small one and drown tiny portions in cream and brandy sauce). I always mean to get C'mas pudding ice cream which I had once and was rather good

sometime later - cheeseboard with charcuterie, olive and wotnot

Edited

We have ‘something in cheese’ (cauliflower/ leeks / broccoli or a mix of the aforementioned every Sunday roast- you’re missing out)

BellaBal · 08/12/2025 15:42

I did that last year - by the time I’d catered to my various family members begging me to make various things it ended up being more effort than a roast! This year I’m roasting.

I got caught out like that last year!

DP said “oh don’t bother with a sit down meal for just us 2, just chuck a load of nibbles on the table and it’ll be much easier”.
The time it took faffing around with “just a crown and some ham to pick at” and heated all the nibbles, boiled bloody eggs, opened pickles and laid out the entire contents of sodding Tesco M+S & Morrisons
I wish I had cooked the usual meal!!
Ive been quite clear this year, we are having a dinner, and if he wants to “pick at bits” he can sort it out himself! I enjoy doing the Christmas dinner, I find it easy and much prefer it to all the faff with picking.. That is more a Boxing Day thing

Evergreen21 · 09/12/2025 01:23

A fry up for breakfast and then my body weight in chocolate throughout the day. Xmas. We have prawns and mozzarella sticks, spring rolls etc for a starter or lunch. Dinner will be a leg of Lamb this year with roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, brussel sprouts, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. Dessert is usually a yule log and profiteroles. The kids and dh like all manners of cheeses and crackers whilst I will have a double dose of dessert.

mathanxiety · 09/12/2025 04:19

Rump roast with YPs
Gravy.
Leftover turkey stuffing that I made at Thanksgiving and froze.
Roast potatoes.
Sweet potatoes mashed with butter and molasses.
Roast parsnips and carrots.
Green beans.
Sprouts with balsamic reduction.

I wouldn't do YPs with turkey.

Desserts -
Pecan pie
Pumpkin pie
Tiramisu
Buche de Noel

Brunch will be cinnamon rolls, rushers, sausages, scrambled eggs, fruit salad.

We eat dinner between 6 and 7pm.

Where do u buy yours from?

Sorry @Eggybreadwithnuts I've only just seen this.
My in-laws buys all the meat for Christmas, they still live in a village that has a traditional butchers they've used for years.
I think Costco sells beef rib joints but I haven't been recently so not sure if still do.
Waitrose and Sainsbury's sell rib of beef joints without bones, that might be tour preference.
Weigh your joint and I aways use delia online for timings.
I make a mix of freshly ground black pepper with salt and dry Mustard powder to coat the meat all over.
If don't have mustard powder, use whatever mustard you have in.
Roast on a rack sat over some onions, carrots, celery with water and a stock cube thrown in.
This goes onto make the best gravy!
Good luck, I'm hungry just writing all this down!

@patooties We always have Cauliflower cheese with the roast ham on Christmas eve.

@AquaShark I love porchetta! Might attempt that for NY day. Thanks for the inspiration.

@FlatErica intrigued to knowwhat Sutton Hoo chicken is!

BiddyPopthe2nd · 09/12/2025 12:41

Normally turkey but as I arrive home late on 22nd, it will depend what’s in the shops.

Definitely roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, roasted carrots/parsnips. Gravy. Stuffing if turkey, chicken or lamb. No yorkshires. Possibly an other veg.

Starter is usually a pack of M&S party nibbles eaten while turkey cooks and we open presents in late afternoon.

Cheese course follows main (a good while later).

Dessert (if we have room) is usually plum pudding. Sometimes with ice cream or something chocolatey.

maudmadrigal · 09/12/2025 13:26

This is fun to read!

Breakfast is always a huge fruit salad, Greek yoghurt, red berries and brioche.

Main meal:
No starters

Beef
Mushrooms in red wine
cauli cheese
roast potatoes
honey roast parsnips and carrots
broccoli
peas
pigs in blankets
vegan pigs in blankets
yorkshire puddings
gravy

Haven't given the puddings a lot of thought yet really. We're with my relatives this year, who are main course (and cheese!) people. In laws are all about the puddings so I do need to think about it as kids are used to great quality and variety!

BauhausOfEliott · 09/12/2025 13:41

No Yorkshire puddings on Christmas dinner for me. But each to their own; I have no strong feelings about other people’s dinner choices.

It’s just me, my mum and my DP this year.

I think I’m going to put out a homemade salmon pâté and posh crackers on the coffee table in the living room as a sort of appetiser, rather than a sit-down ormal starter.

Then dinner will be:

Turkey crown with pork and chestnut stuffing for me and DP
A cheese and mushroom en croute thing for my mum, as she’s vegetarian
Vegetarian stuffing balls
Roast spuds
Parsnips roasted with herbs
Buttered carrots
Sprouts caramelised with honey and balsamic vinegar
Pigs in blankets
Homemade gravy
Cranberry sauce

Haven’t decided on dessert but I’ll probably make some kind of trifle and my mum will bring a lovely mincemeat frangipane tart type thing that she makes every year.

Cynic17 · 09/12/2025 13:44

Champagne
Smoked salmon
Lots of cheese
Whatever interesting looking buffet/party food they have in M&S
More champagne
Probably some of those nice little cocktail sausages
A warmed mince pie with Wensleydale cheese
Random stuff from the fridge
Extra cheese
Wine when the champagne runs out.

Absolutely no turkey, roast veg etc.... yuck!
