Here’s the link.

I know we like a nose around other peoples houses. Might need sunglasses for this one.

You’ve got to admire the self belief of someone who thinks that her personal taste in interior decoration is worth £1.5 million!

To me, the “unique” decoration has devalued the house and I’d be looking to offer less than it was sold for last time, because correcting all that lot would be expensive.

100%

MatriarchCaz · 04/12/2025 14:46

Oh god no!! I loved the disney painted house but not this one.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 04/12/2025 14:47

Five bedrooms and just one bathroom (plus a bog under the stairs)

"Emily Powell has also committed to maintaining the work after the sale, refreshing and hand painting every five years for the rest of her life for the future owner - something uniquely additional to the sale of the house."

Is this supposed to be a selling point?

The artist sells paintings for £5k+

Well there's no accounting for taste!

bridgetreilly · 04/12/2025 14:48

Oh, wow, YES! I love Emily Powell’s work. I would adore living there and I also think it will only go up in value.

I'm not going to pretend I would live in it, because I wouldn't, BUT it does have Charleston and Natalie Lete vibes, both of which I quite like in small doses (say a notebook or a lampshade!

But no-one will buy it for 2 mill because no-one is going to want a house around the mansion tax threshold now.

Edited

I don't think the 'mansion tax' will a huge difference to people buying now - if you can afford 2 million either cash or mortgage, I doubt an extra 200ish a month will put you off - it's more of a problem for people finding themselves in a house they bought for much, much less, that has gradually increased in value and who have a massive asset but little income.

Simply that someone is willing to pay her £2,000.00 for a painting, I guess. Essentially, it's always that, isn't it?

Precisely, the options are -

(1) Artists charge for their time at a pre-agreed rate.

(2) Artists produce art and let the market decide what it is worth.

(3) A panel of experts sit around determining the price of every piece of art ever made and it is illegal to transact at any other price.

Whilst I regard (2) as very unfair (it values my untrained and quickly knocked-up art as worthless trash, and Da Vinci as worth mega-money, despite the fact that it is clear to me that it should be the other way around), it is probably the best option.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/12/2025 14:50

Nope, I like colour but for me that’s way too much -

EasternStandard · 04/12/2025 14:51

JamieCannister · 04/12/2025 14:45

It seems like the artist paid £525k for 11 Nelson Road in 2022.

It now needs full redecoration in a flat market so she's asking about £1,505,000 too much.

Blimey that’s a bit of a mark up

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/12/2025 14:51

Oh man, I would have a perpetual headache living in that. It just looks like youv'e let your 3yr olds run amok with paint 😂

Auchkinek · 04/12/2025 14:51

I don't mind it, I might keep elements but I can't cope with striped ceilings. I would probably redorate any house I bought so the decor doesn't really influence me (unless it's textured finishes which are a nightmare to deal with).
I'm more shocked at 2 million for a very, very average mid terrace, I guess that proves the mansion tax argument.

I doubt the taxman will be so gracious to not tax someone who has paid £2,000,000 for a house, and to call it art, rather than a house. The buyer will still have to pay the stamp duty and the council tax, after all.

I suppose. I think for art to be exempt from tax it has to be available to the public as well, so the house would have to open to the public. I wonder is she going to commit to up keeping the artwork for the rest of her life or just to the person she sells to directly? Quite a ballsy move, I don't think my ego could take the hit if it didn't sell!

MiddleAgedDread · 04/12/2025 14:54

a 5 bed house and only 1 bathroom! No thanks

SpaceRaccoon · 04/12/2025 14:55

HPFA · 04/12/2025 14:09

For comparison, there's a house for sale in Brixham for £1,300,000

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/157222835#/?channel=RES_BUY

People keep trying to persuade us there are loads of "ordinary" houses around worth £2 mill but outside of central London they're pretty rare.

I love this one. Although I'm horrified that I'm in the same council tax band as them and their house is worth 5x what mine is.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 04/12/2025 14:56

omg she's an actual artist. I assumed it was some hippies who let the kids go wild with the posterpaints.

AgnesMcDoo · 04/12/2025 14:56

Ghastly and much, much smaller than my £400k house

I wasn't familiar with her work, but this has prompted me to look online and it does have a certain appeal.

Funnywonder · 04/12/2025 14:58

Reminds me of one of my favourite films, The Rebel🤣

Even the slide got a couple of coats of ‘Christ My Eyes’. I don’t know how she missed painting the garden bench. It must be due an up cycle surely.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/12/2025 14:59

Oh, Sweet Jesus!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 04/12/2025 15:00

Jesus wept

Its a terrace with smaller sq ft than our period london house (in a decent area) and doesnt even have sea views and thats before you get into the interior which is... A LOT. The quality of the painting is also pretty slapdash 🫠🥴
I sort of recoiled while viewing it!

I could see it doing well as an airbnb though...

I’d buy it, but I’d re paint I’m afraid!

ShallWeDance · 04/12/2025 15:02

I don't hate it but it's too much for me.

Love the way the little slide in the garden does not escape the paint brush. 🙂

Lostxmasfairy · 04/12/2025 15:06

No thank it's not even the decoration that would put me off 1 bathroom for a 5 bed I'm out.
