Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Just stumbled across this video and have to say that if I had 'upwards of £850k' going spare I'd be very tempted by this house built in 1710. It's beautiful even as it is and I really hope that whoever buys it doesn't mess the place up.

My god. The good old days…
Someone my father knew was driving a sport car in the 1960s and when the lorry in front of him stopped, he didn’t. He died in gruesome circumstances. There are now bars low down on the backs of lorries

That happened to a friend of my dad's. She survived but spent a long time in hospital.

Top night last night, as having CRUSHED St Helens last week, Wigan DESTROYED Leeds Rhinos convincingly at home. 🍒🍒It was even on the telly too!

Britinme · 16/05/2026 21:35

Wrong side of the Pennines won!

My DS here in the USA has been bought by his DBIL (a very well-off person) tickets to a World Cup soccer game for him and his brother, who will be visiting in June for DS's 40th birthday. Not the most spectacular game - I think it's Norway vs Senegal - but they will be thrilled when he finds out about it!

For no particular reason, here's Maximilian Philipp Hieronymus, Duke of Bavaria-Leuchtenberg, painted by Sebastiano Bombelli, c. 1666.

Well, you can't complain it's got no pockets! 😁

BetjemansBear · 22/05/2026 15:43

Blimey, imagine having to wear that get-up every day! Just getting dressed must have taken hours.

Kucinghitam · 22/05/2026 15:59

I'd be worried about getting too close to candles and fireplaces!

It may have pockets, but you'd need an hour to find them.

Gonners · 22/05/2026 20:38

I feel sad now that I am too old to breed, because Maximilian Philipp Hieronymus is such a great name ... especially if your surname is something like Smith.

artant · 22/05/2026 22:26

That’s quite a look!

Gonners · 24/05/2026 21:07

Is anyone experiencing this alleged heatwave? It's been pleasantly warm and sunny here (East Kent coast) but really not what I'd call hot. 22C with low humidity is hardly a heatwave.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 24/05/2026 21:59

It was 31 deg here, to the west of Kent, and I was in (even hotter) London, seeing the shops’ decorations for Chelsea Flower show- spectacular in a lot of cases, and attracting a huge number of people, giving a jolly, festival sort of atmosphere.

moto748e · 24/05/2026 23:34

It was pleasantly warm here, nice on the bike with just a leather jacket and tee-shirt. hopefully a bit more of that this week!

ProfessorBinturong · 25/05/2026 01:05

A lovely 22 here, but 32 where MaBint is.

ProfessorBinturong · 25/05/2026 01:13

It's the high pressure, rather than the temperature, that I'm finding uncomfortable. Like the opposite of being up a mountain.

BetjemansBear · 25/05/2026 07:06

We've certainly got it in west Oxfordshire. 30C yesterday, forecast to be 34C today and 33C tomorrow. I have washed everything in the house.

Kucinghitam · 25/05/2026 07:43

It was lovely yesterday here in ThatYorkshire, mid-20s with the slightest breeze. Today it is forecast to get to 31C.

We are to meet up with some of DH's relatives and the whole thing has descended into a flurry of undecided witterings on WhatsApp. So I have no idea what we're going to be doing with a bunch of golden citizens, in the midst of a heatwave.

BetjemansBear · 25/05/2026 08:48

It's already 26C here Confused

Gonners · 25/05/2026 09:01

@Kucinghitam I have no idea what we're going to be doing with a bunch of golden citizens, in the midst of a heatwave.

Chuck them in the Aire?

ProfessorBinturong · 25/05/2026 09:17

Are there any damp, underground attractions nearby - caves, cathedral crypts, vampire lairs?

DeanElderberry · 25/05/2026 09:18

25 degrees here yesterday, just nice for gentle meander round an organic farm at a Biodiversity Week event. Blackcaps and sticklebacks and tadpoles and hawthorn and (just twice) a cuckoo.

Britinme · 25/05/2026 12:37

Chilly and rainy here today, in time to ruin everybody’s Memorial Day holiday cookouts.

SinnerBoy · 25/05/2026 13:01

It's been hot here since Friday. We went to Newbiggin by the Sea yesterday and waist deep rock pools were body temperature. The car showed 20 ° on the way back, at.

Just come back from a 45 minute cycle and it feels even hotter. I'm glad I had an extra mug of water, before leaving.

My wife found a hermit crab yesterday, presumably stood on, with only 1 spiral of winkle shell, like a hat on its bum. We collected a few empties and put it in a little pool with them - after a few minutes, it jumped into one.

BetjemansBear · 25/05/2026 13:51

That trip to the beach and collecting empty shells for the hermit crab sounds wonderful and waist deep rock pools at body temperature sounds glorious!

Currently 31.5C and climbing.
