Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Ooh, Happy Birthday @Britinme!

Also, thanks to @ProfessorBinturong for reminding me of birthdays as I had totally forgotten that it will be MrG's on Thursday.

Britinme · 28/02/2026 21:08

Thank you very much for my birthday wishes. I don’t know if I’ve dropped off the list or what but I don’t seem to have had any notifications from this thread for ages. Quiet day today but a posh dinner tomorrow and an overnight trip Tuesday to Wednesday for celebration purposes.

Kucinghitam · 28/02/2026 22:36

Happy birthday @Britinme 🎂

Thanks Kuc :-) That's just reminded me - you remember the poem I wrote about the photo you shared of your dad? Could you remind me what city that was taken in? I want to add an epigraph identifying the city, as the content is not in an American setting.

Kucinghitam · 28/02/2026 23:05

I remember your lovely poem @Britinme! The photo was from Georgetown, Penang.

Ah thanks Kuc. Much appreciated.

Happy Birthday, Brit! On the subject of birthdays, I found that my daughter's birthday is the day that the Germans invaded Norway, via a film called Goldrun.

It's about how they got their gold reserves out, before the Nazis got it .

Belated birthday greetings, Brit!

Does anyone remember a widget from the early 2000s of cartoon singing horses? There were four horses and when you clicked them they'd sing certain tones and you could end up with them singing harmonies. It was made with Flash but support for that stopped years ago. I looked to see if there was a version still around and someone has re-done it.

St. David's Day, eh? Have a good one, if its your thing.

Britinme · 01/03/2026 12:03

I visited St David’s Cathedral in Wales once - lovely part of the country.

artant · 01/03/2026 17:46

I intended to cut a bunch of daffs from the garden for St David’s day as my mum can’t really get out to look at things very easily but whereas it used to be touch and go whether daffs would be out in time, this year they’ve been out for weeks and I’d struggle to find any still in bud.

A bit late but happy birthday @Britinme

Britinme · 01/03/2026 17:51

I once saw daffodils in bloom on Boxing Day near Tenby.

artant · 01/03/2026 18:28

Heh! That is early! I’ve managed a very small bunch of mini daffs almost all in full flower but a couple of buds. I should have been out dead heading the spent ones though; they were more plentiful.

Gonners · 01/03/2026 19:04

I once tried to visit St David's Cathedral in September. I was in Pembrokeshire on my own and realised I'd never seen it - although I have seen every castle at least twice and most of them 3 or 4 times! So I hired a car and set off. About 10 miles from St David's a thick fog rolled in and I couldn't see the bonnet of the car, let alone the road. I'm slightly ashamed to say I turned round and went back.

Was helping DD make a CV and she was fretting about not having work experience. So I sent her this.

Our daffs aren't out, but the crocuses / crocii are trying. The painted lady hibernating in a glass in the garage is twitching, probably time to evict it!

Kucinghitam · 02/03/2026 12:23

Our tête-à-têtes are all out, as are another early variety whose name I don't recall. Crocuses have been out since last week.

BetjemansBear · 02/03/2026 13:10

Lots of allium foliage sprouting up here, plus Dutch irises. Daffs are out which is good to see.

Kucinghitam · 02/03/2026 14:33

Anybody else feel rather peculiar about carrying on with normal daily life and chatting about spring flowers, whilst the threat of war looms? I'm doing all my usual stuff - working busily, MNetting in my breaks, deciding what to cook for dinner, ordering a new toilet seat and constantly checking the news of the escalating shitshow. It's giving me a weird out-of-body feeling.

Britinme · 02/03/2026 14:41

Me too Kuc, especially as Trump appears to have no idea what the end-game is. Personally I think he’s playing pigeon chess.

No daffodils here for another month or so - we still have a couple of feet of snow on the ground.

BetjemansBear · 02/03/2026 14:53

Same here. Just read about a big increase in 'chatter' from sleeper cells in Europe and the US and it's made my hair stand on end.

Britinme · 02/03/2026 14:57

What variety of sleeper cells @BetjemansBear?
