Psychics/mediums/spiritualists

Dollymylove · 02/12/2025 17:31

Anyone utilised the services of a psychic medium /spiritualist?
Is it all bunkum?
I thought so until I decided to go to a spiritualist church
I was picked out by the medium who described my late sister to a tee.
I was absolutely gobsmacked, there was no possibility she could have known me, or my sister!!
Anyone have any thoughts?

My jury is out on this but im considering as miss my nan dreadfully

I am undecided. I went to a medium and they were awful. Just spoke a load of crap basically. Few years later I went to another and he told me things that no one else in my life knew. I'd never said this out loud to another human. But he knew. So that made me second guess myself. Can't explain it any other way.

FracasFracas · 02/12/2025 17:37

When you say ‘described your sister to a tee’, what exactly did this person say?

It's bunkum, it really is!

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 02/12/2025 17:40

I'm a Spiritualist and follow the religion...as was my Mum. We had a Spiritualist funeral for her.. l have received many messages from loved ones in Spirit. I have also sat open circles and given messages..
It's like any religion.. you either believe or you don't.
( I'm not talking fortune tellers on Blackpool seat front).

When you say ‘described your sister to a tee’, what exactly did this person say?

Her personality, her struggles with her weight, her hoarding, her love of vinyl records, being reunited with my Dad.
Any of those things alone could be explained away but all put together makes a different story

I never have, but a niece who was having odd experiences in a (new to them) old property (dog refusing to set a paw inside certain rooms although the family sensed nothing) she asked an acquaintance (who didn’t charge) to take a look.

Suffice It to say that after she’d sensed the issue ( aftermath of a tragic death) and asked the presence (who had been responsible) to leave, the dog was perfectly happy to enter those rooms.
I dare say the usual scoffers will say that the dog had imagined it…

KissMyArt · 02/12/2025 17:44

No-one can speak to the dead.

Plenty can pretend to do so, and those are who you need to watch.

They're either delusional or out and out liars.

cramptramp · 02/12/2025 17:44

It’s absolute rubbish. But if it gives people comfort and they don’t charge for it, so what.

No

Nobody should underestimate what dogs can sense, hear and smell, far far more than humans can even imagine 😊

I completely agree! Animals, especially dogs and, of course, cats, are excellent at seeing things that are invisible to humans. This has been proven time and again.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2026 18:56

Complete bunkum. Sometimes innocent-often pernicious.

Proved by who and how?

Blackeyelinerbigeyes · 29/08/2026 19:10

I believe and have a family member who can receive messages from others who have died. She sometimes struggles to resit messages that come through- there was an interesting scene in an old church where a warrior of some kind did not like them being there & was a really strong spirit. She had to be led out to get away from it.

I have seen & experienced things that probably could be explained away (my baby laughing and following something unseen to my eyes, an Airbnb with a definite story, someone standing close next to me in a museum who just wasn't there) but I personally believe they're all supernatural.

SlightlyTremulous · 29/08/2026 19:12

Of course it’s bunkum, OP. I’m sorry for loss. Don’t let these leeches prey on your grief and vulnerability.

Iliketulips · 29/08/2026 19:15

I'm still a bit skeptical, but my Mum was told she must get help if her husband was ill - he had a heart within two weeks. They were late 30s, a healthy weight and he didn't have any ongoing health concerns, so makes me wonder.

YourRubyMaker · 29/08/2026 19:30

I went to see one and she was amazing , she told me things about my life,my past and my family that she would never of known even to things I would be doing the weekend coming up it was crazy ! I was skeptical before and I don’t think I’d see another as it was so good and also positive, she asked me if I wanted to do the medium side aswell but I didn’t want to and was happy to just do the fortune telling side of it

JudyTeeny · 29/08/2026 19:34

I don't believe most of them are genuine, especially the ones who charge a fee. However, I met a woman at an event who told me things about my dad that couldn't have been guessed. She was a medium from a spiritualist church and didn't believe in charging for readings.

swallowtailbutterfly · 29/08/2026 19:36

BIL paid a supposedly genuine one extra to lie to MIL and tell her that her mum was ok and at peace as MIL wasn’t getting over the death and was being self destructive

MartinaKreig · 29/08/2026 20:30

I honestly feel sorry for people who simply dismiss things they can’t see or explain through conventional materialistic thinking. It reminds me of how, centuries ago, many people couldn’t accept the idea that the Earth revolved around the Sun — to them, it seemed like complete nonsense.
Perhaps one day, what we now call the “subtle” or invisible world, and the ability to perceive and interact with energy, will become much more widely accepted. For now, though, these ideas still seem completely marginal to many people.
Most of us were simply brought up to think in a certain way. Some people happen to encounter things in their lives that are difficult to explain within that framework, while others never do. In the end, that may be the only real difference.

Not as sorry as I feel for the gullible people whose grief is exploited by charlatans.

You're right about that - there are plenty of charlatans out there, and for someone inexperienced, it can be very difficult to tell who's genuine and who's not. But that doesn't mean a spiritual or non-material reality doesn't exist.
The funny thing is that the charlatans are often the easiest to spot: they run large esoteric businesses, have huge advertising budgets, and surround themselves with all the usual props designed to impress gullible clients — candles, crystal balls, elaborate outfits, tons of jewelry, and so on.
Truly gifted healers and clairvoyants, on the other hand, are usually not well known, live fairly modest lives, and are often discovered simply through word of mouth.
