What hack has blown your mind?

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

My contribution is to use cornflour as dry shampoo. I mix a bit of baby powder in aswell because it smells nice. Use a make up brush to dab onto roots. Works just as good as dry shampoo at a fraction of the coat and more natural

If you get caught in the rain, does it make your hair thicker?!

@sladtheinkaler I use a tupperware box as a butter dish and hate cleaning it out, so I shall try this!

What a great thread! I’ve learned lots of tips, but I really need one myself. We have recently moved to a house that already had a new kitchen. The sink is a grey composite and has loads of stains, probably mainly tea. I have no idea how to remove them as they are all over the draining board too. Has anyone got a tip? TIA

It's not a tip really it's just a product, but the thing I have found brilliant for tea stains on the sink is these sponges from Must Have Ideas. I'm not sure how they work, must be something to do with the wavy surface but you get them wet and they get the sink really clean. They also work on my vinyl kitchen flooring where nothing else has succeeded

The post about the bubble wrap bath blanket has blown my mind 😂 I’m now wondering why we don’t have baths with hinged, insulated lids that come down to keep the heat in (with a semicircle gap for our body/head to pop out of).

Bloozie · 03/12/2025 09:08

Use a scrubbing brush to clean shower screens and tiles in the bathroom, not a cloth. I got an Addis one with nylon bristles from Sainsburys. It doesn't scratch the tiles - it does clean the grout MUCH faster (like brushing your tiles teeth!), and makes cleaning the soap and water marks off the shower screen because no one could be arsed to squeegee a positive breeze.

I use Method Bathroom Spray and since starting, haven't seen any mould at all appear between cleans.

Oh I have a lighting fires hack too... Assuming you use logs:

  • Place two logs horizontally across the bottom of your grate, with the bark edge of one facing you and the other with its back to the back of the fire - so it creates a valley between the two logs
  • Put a firelighter at either end of the valley, each one poking a tiny bit over the end of each log so you can see it when you come to light it
  • Lay kindling vertically across the gap between the two logs, like you're laying a train track. It will bridge the gap.
  • Now lay kindling the other way across - you normally need two rows
  • Put a third log on top
  • Light each firelighter.

I have never had a fire do anything other than get off to a roaring start - it heats the chimney superfast and starts drawing the smoke up, rather than the horrible smoky starts you can get. No need for newspaper.

I was never in the Guides, but reading that I instantly feel like I could join NOW.
Either that, or the Chalet School on an expedition. I don't know when I'll next need to light a fire, maybe never, but by God I'm now armed with all the knowledge I need. Brilliant.

Nothing makes me feel more capable than the facts that I can light a fire, and catch and gut a fish. Comforting in these darkening days.

My husband will happily stay in the bath for hours (I know). I'm feeling some research into bath insulators may save us a lot of hot water.

It's not a hack, but buy a small travel clothes steamer (I have the Tefal Pop), never iron again and works on delicate fabrics. I'm actually going to get rid of my ironing board.

Did you know that until duvets "escaped" from Europe, there was no such thing as a double duvet? Originally each person had their own duvet. https://www.obc-uk.net/blog/one-vs-two-duvets-around-the-world?srsltid=AfmBOor3ujdBFGDPu-tDuWkJO3L7QbweQtQgoEUu1xEGEOff6L-P7KYs

Yes- we got the idea from holidays in Europe! We use 2 slightly smaller duvets (double duvets on a king size bed) so they still look nice layered on top of each other when the bed is "made". But I've seen single duvets side by side on a double bed, too.

I have a super king bed with two single duvets. A 15 tog for DH and a 4 tog for me. I don't really care what they look like but they sit alongside each other and I find they are big enough. An advantage of using single duvets is that most fit in the washing machine.

NEVER do this on silver plate, only solid silver (I guess). Disaster 😣

Not great on solid silver either..

At least no one seems to have suggested toothpaste yet (thank goodness)

Imbrocator · 03/12/2025 13:33

If it hasn’t already been mentioned, then the best ‘hack’ I’ve ever been told was: when someone asks to borrow an item from you, take a picture of them holding it.

No more forgetting who borrowed my things several months later, and no more well-meaning friends telling me they never beheld that item before in their life, no sir, scout’s honour - because I now have the evidence of them posing for a picture with it!

For fellow sinusitis sufferers, reusable hand warmers are the perfect temperature to hold against your face to relieve sinus pain. Much less messy than hot flannels.

Gagagardener · 02/12/2025 08:20

Bought a new kingsize duvet, stitched in squares. Size given as 222 x225 cm, so measuring not much help. Googled for help.

Discovered that kingsize duvet is wider than it is long and that "manufacturer's label, if there is one, is usually at the foot (or head) end".

There'll be more squares going across than down, just count them

Not RTFT so don’t know if this gem has been mentioned. I have quite fine hair and I like to hold my fringe back with a thin hair grip. It tends to slide about so I’ve roughed up the grip with an emery board to improve the hold.

@Nofksleft2give I learned this technique in the 70s/80s off the Generation Game!! It was when duvets were very new in the UK - don't know if anyone else remembers it but the 'game' was to put the duvet in the cover within sixty seconds and of course, no one had ever done it so chaos ensued. The demo of how to do it correctly at the end stayed with me somehow even though it was a good 15 years before I had a duvet and cover on my bed!

OMG -I've been telling people about this Generation Game programme for years. It used to be my job to change the beds with mum when we had sheets and blankets. Duvets then came in - I watched this programme and it made it all so much easier to change everyone's beds. IIRC they had chambermaids from the top hotels demonstrate it first.
I also used the technique for a student cleaning job in hotels in the 80's and use it to this day........

The European way is to use 2 single duvets. When you make the bed you fold each one in half through the middle, short ends together, and then place the two folded duvets next to each other on the bed. I’m not explaining it very well!

I learnt recently, that I can wash my fringe, without washing the rest of my barnet! Life changing 😆

PSPoppet · 03/12/2025 19:25

Even better then put it in the night before and set the timer so it’s done just when you get up - then you can tumble dry while getting ready

PSPoppet · 03/12/2025 19:26

I think the washing sheets are even better

It floats! So on the bath. Either with or without human

Oh so it’s like putting a saucer on top of your cup to keep your coffee warm whilst eating your lunch.

Has anyone shared how to wash a greasy tupperware yet?

Squirt a bit of washing up liquid and some water into the greasy box. Put a bit of kitchen roll in. Lid on. Shake vigorously. Completely clean and no grease. This is now standard practice in my house.

Oh My God!! I have tried this tonight on 2 lunchboxes, and it works! Amazing, thank you Flowers
