What hack has blown your mind?

MindblownMia · 01/12/2025 14:36

On the weekend I burnt some black felt onto my iron and it was impossible to get off. I tried spraying it with cleaner, scrubbing it with a sponge and scraping it when hot but nothing worked.

I was about to give up when I learnt that if you pick up a piece of paracetamol or ibuprofen with some tweezers and then wipe it all over the hot iron, the marks literally disappear.

My mind has been blown.

My mind was also blown when I learnt on Mumsnet that the stripes on a super king duvet go horizontally not vertically 🤣 I just thought none of my duvet covers fit 💀

What other things like this have blown peoples minds? I can’t keep living without all these amazing hacks 😂

Actually mine is- get 2 duvets - we have a John Lewis one that actually came as two duvets buttoned together so we separated them. Put a plain white duvet cover on one and the "nice" duvet cover on the other. Layer them on the made bed with the white one on the bottom; sleep with one each. (This is particularly useful if you have different preferred sleeping temperatures- you can have one person with a higher "tog" duvet than the other.)

Did you know that until duvets "escaped" from Europe, there was no such thing as a double duvet? Originally each person had their own duvet. https://www.obc-uk.net/blog/one-vs-two-duvets-around-the-world?srsltid=AfmBOor3ujdBFGDPu-tDuWkJO3L7QbweQtQgoEUu1xEGEOff6L-P7KYs

One double duvet vs two single duvets? A review of what couples do by country | UK

We review whether in countries around the world couples share a single duvet or whether they get a dreamy night’s sleep by using two duvets. | UK

Now, this is the husband I'd like to clone, not the one that makes it easier for me to do!!

😁

Well tbh it's a lot easier for him to do that!

I'm not very tall & he also reaches things out of cupboards to save me having to get the steps out!

diddl · 02/12/2025 20:01

Well it makes sense really doesn't it?

We have a single mattress each in a Kingsize(?) frame so have a single duvet each as well.

When you share a double bed you have less than a single bed each!

My ideal would be a double or small double mattress each but the room isn't big enough!

Nail polish remover works wonders for stains, sticky stuff, marks etc

More of a tip than a hack…but get a duvet cover the size up from your bed size. So much more comfortable especially when you’re sharing a bed and need that extra bit of duvet. We have a king size bed and super king duvet and it’s great not fighting over the covers 😄

Edited

Ah interesting we do sort of the opposite!
Super king bed and a double duvet cover each, no more fighting over one!

What a great thread! I’ve learned lots of tips, but I really need one myself. We have recently moved to a house that already had a new kitchen. The sink is a grey composite and has loads of stains, probably mainly tea. I have no idea how to remove them as they are all over the draining board too. Has anyone got a tip? TIA

Buy some "Barkeepers Friend". Smells like wee, but removes marks from ceramic surfaces.
Most supermarkets sell it.

using a tin opener to lift up the lid on a jar
ingenious hack
either that or take a breath and then as you are breathing out open the jar

Also if you tap the jam jar lid against the wall it breaks the vacuum and it is super easy to open.

I sometimes used to find that my shoelaces would get loose or even come undone (particularly if the laces are nylon). A few years ago I found that there's a very simple solution.

Tying a shoelace is normally a two stage process:

  1. An over and under.
  2. Then a bow on top.

The solution is to introduce an extra step between those two, which is simply to swap the laces between your hands. So the lace that was in your left hand goes to your right hand and vice versa.

I've not had a single loose lace since I started doing this, it's bloody brilliant!

Best thread ever

Are you a new poster? This type of thread is posted probably every month. There probably isn't an easy way to find them but if you like tips the similar threads might be useful

Be warned though you will find them pretty repetitive

OooPourUsACupLove · 02/12/2025 22:10

Use two cleansing pads at a time, one in each hand to do both sides of your face at the same time - done in half the time.

(Not sure if this is a hack or if I'm just a bit dumb and everyone else always did it this way)

Nofksleft2give · 01/12/2025 15:31

Or…wash covers inside out, when dry put one hand in each upper corner like a glove puppet, grab two bottom corners of the duvet through the fabric and shake shake shake. The cover will fall down over the duvet and reverse itself to show the right side up.

I don't even do that. I've got king size feather doonas. Put doona cover down with top corners visible. Insert top corner of doona into top corner of cover. Feed bulk in opening and position bottom corner same side in bottom corner of the cover. Repeat other side. Hold bottom corners - cover and doona. Shake a couple of times to flatten. Takes less time than it did to type the instructions.

For correct orientation, the care tag is typically on the bottom.

Whoa!
How did I get to the age of 69 before finding out about the "rolling the duvet in the cover" hack!

Amazing.

Now can someone explain what is meant by the duvet in the pillow case one.

Someone probably already explained, but after washing, fold your duvet and pillow cases up and place them all into one of the pillow cases. So the whole set is stored together and you dont have to go looking for all the matching bits. I learned this years ago and it is brilliant!

Or run the lid under a hot water tap or boiling kettle
Metal expands

You can also do it by tapping the rim of the metal lid quite firmly on a hard surface (I just use the kitchen counter). Hold the jar horizontally and rotate until you’ve tapped all the way round the edge of the lid and it almost always opens easily.

Also loving the green bean one.

Mine is a gadget rather than a hack but it's worth bending the rules for. It's a safety tin opener. It doesn't cut into the metal on the top of the can or round the sides, it unpeels the top piece from the can leaving only blunt edges. The top sits so beautifully snug after unpeeling that at first you don't think it's worked, but it has, and the lid can be completely removed and can be neatly replaced should you wish.

Like the PP who recommended it, we bought one for DD as she went off to uni, and then had to buy ourselves one as we missed it.

Yes, got this exact one!

I put the bedsheet and extra pillowcases in as well, so everything needed to change the bed is in the pillowcase. So you just need to take the relevant pillowcase out when it's time to change the bed, and don't need to look for anything else.

We now have two complete changes per bed, stored in pillowcases, and no other sheets/duvets/pillowcases. It saves a lot of space in the airing cupboard.

Re poaching eggs, line a cup/mug with a piece of clingfilm, crack in egg, gather up edges & twist together - looks like an enormous sperm.
Put in pan of boiling water with tail over the side. Perfect every time.

I hate to be the voice of gloom, but wouldn't leach micro plastics from the cling film into the egg?

jamcorrosion · 03/12/2025 01:25

For me it was sunlight on stains! I’m 35 and only learnt this in the last few years haha. Every time I do it, it amazes me it’s like magic

GripGetter · 03/12/2025 01:42

MindblownMia · 01/12/2025 15:29

Nooooo 🤣 gutted this doesn’t work in these cases!

I've never heard that (the pasta spoon one). My spaghetti metric is a 2l Coke bottle lid. If the spaghetti ends fit inside, that's one portion.

Ihitthetarget · 03/12/2025 01:52

Visiting friend suggested to me not to fully change duvet on the bed she was going to use for 1 night - just put a clean one on top of the original, then take it off the next day.

Meant we avoided having to take off then put back on the original one (no spare room so she was sleeping in someone's room).

Lougle · 02/12/2025 07:40

I like it warm.

You can heat in microwave

AleaEim · 03/12/2025 06:10

If making pasta, boil only a couple inches of water in the pot while you boil the rest of water needed in kettle, the water in the pot will have heated up so when the water from the kettle goes in it should all start boiling straight away.

Yes this is the norm in Germany & Austria.

Il try this instead of a double knot!

My contribution is to use cornflour as dry shampoo. I mix a bit of baby powder in aswell because it smells nice. Use a make up brush to dab onto roots. Works just as good as dry shampoo at a fraction of the coat and more natural
