Its supposed to be the satsuma collection (tangerines, mandarin oranges, and satsumas) season at the moment and they are all terrible.

You cant get a decent satsuma in supermarkets imo.
My village greengrocer sells proper ones. Big, juicy, sweet, and you can unpeel them in one. Gorgeous.

PruthePrune · 30/11/2025 17:52

I know exactly what you mean. I long for a baggy skinned satsuma of my childhood.

PropertyD · 30/11/2025 17:53

Me too. They are hard and tasteless

Snowonground · 30/11/2025 18:03

Even the waitrose ones or m&s are terrible. Dry or alternatively have that slightly rotten taste. What's going on, that's what I want to know! I woild not be happy to get one in my stocking this year...

I love the saggy skin ones to. Hard to get. Did get some at tescos but not local to me it was when visiting a village.

Have you seen the price of orange juice lately? I read there has been an appalling orange harvest this year. Might have something to do with it?

GardenersDelight · 30/11/2025 18:59

I've had some decent ones from both asda and sainsbury this autumn
Had argument with brother this morning about how much superior satsumas are compared to other easy peelers

ErrolTheDragon · 30/11/2025 19:09

I’ve had some nice ones very recently - I think the last were tangerines from Asda.

Yes! So many people look at me oddly when I talk about a baggy skinned satsuma! I’m spoilt as I used to work in a greengrocers and we were allowed to have a couple of pieces of fruit per day - such a brilliant flavour. You just don’t get that in supermarkets.

comoatoupeira · 30/11/2025 20:20

It’s not the season yet. It’s January.
Theyre all right at Xmas but don’t bother before then.

Louisetopaz21 · 30/11/2025 20:56

And what's with 'easy peelers'? I want to know what it is!
