Things nobody needs in their life - even if they're on sale

I’ve been at Mumsnet for a long time now, over a decade actually, which is slightly terrifying. And I feel like I’ve worked more Black Friday weekend shifts than anyone should ever have to. Every year we wade through endless spreadsheets of deals to find the ones that are genuinely good. But there are always some things that really should stay on the shelf, no matter the discount.

We’ve got a team Slack chat going with some of our most ridiculous finds. Here are my favourites. Enjoy and add your own; you’ve probably seen far worse!

  1. The world's furriest slippers
  2. A weirdly realistic Tortilla blanket
  3. A shrimp plush toy holding a tube of Pringles???

The book Unleashed, by Boris Johnson.
Also the book Spare, by Prince Harry. I've seen videos of somebody "recycling" the book by sawing it up, and making it into a useful object.

I'm tempted to ask for the medieval cats with crowns version.

Oh I like that one!

I know that no one on this planet is going to buy me anything from this selection of presents. Thanks be to all the goddesses.

Dear God, the Grauniad has included the Wank Egg in this list. There’s a whole MN thread declared to them here:

Baby blue platform boots with embellishments? I wonder if they would jangle when you walk?

Or when you hobble into A&E with a broken ankle?

And into my basket they go!

Just bought them for my mum.

Celiathebanshee · 03/12/2025 22:51

DD has the tortilla blanket. Are you saying you don’t want to be a burrito?

Just bought them for my mum.

Cancelled after looking at the reviews

I quite fancy the slippers…

They're 'wipe clean only'.

I have that Tortilla. My eldest ds bought it for my naps and I have to say that it is so soft and cosy.

@RayaMumsnet Large and ugly cars.

B-segment cars are more than adequate for all able-bodied people.

Candle warmers. Heat lamps for candles where you don't actually light them, just melt the wax and release the scent. More pointless tat for landfill.

Oh, but would they be safer?

Sometimes there’s a reason these things are on sale …

coz no one wants them !

Exactly.

Fillybuster · 06/12/2025 19:01

I’ve bought the crab spoon rest for DSis. Considering getting one for myself, too 😳
