Things nobody needs in their life - even if they're on sale

I’ve been at Mumsnet for a long time now, over a decade actually, which is slightly terrifying. And I feel like I’ve worked more Black Friday weekend shifts than anyone should ever have to. Every year we wade through endless spreadsheets of deals to find the ones that are genuinely good. But there are always some things that really should stay on the shelf, no matter the discount.

We’ve got a team Slack chat going with some of our most ridiculous finds. Here are my favourites. Enjoy and add your own; you’ve probably seen far worse!

  1. The world's furriest slippers
  2. A weirdly realistic Tortilla blanket
  3. A shrimp plush toy holding a tube of Pringles???

I guess a Snackle is better than a shitting flamingo?😅

Santa brought this to my son the year ir came out and the ads were everywhere.

He LOVED it. I do not know why, but he did. I bought lots of sand, would never again. Toddlers just chuck it!

I'm tempted to ask for the medieval cats with crowns version.

DressOrSkirt · 30/11/2025 01:47

Sorry but these are all way better than more skincare and hair dryers imo!

Treviarpelli · 30/11/2025 03:32

Xmas cats look like the perfect secret Santa gift to me, they’re hilarious

Middlechild3 · 30/11/2025 07:04

Candle warmers. Heat lamps for candles where you don't actually light them, just melt the wax and release the scent. More pointless tat for landfill.

That tortilla blanket is in our house!!
My son is obsessed with making wraps, so it was a funny present one Christmas.
Its really soft !

Same for us! Was his favourite birthday present a couple of years ago. He still likes it!

Some cats dressed as Christmas trees, for your Christmas tree?

The Cats look so lovely in the pictures! But the customer feedback is they're terribly disappointing flat cardboard tat. See the picture for what they look like in reality:

Your not wrong there @Dogmum1983 !

It’s you’re, not your.

Baby blue platform boots with embellishments? I wonder if they would jangle when you walk?

In the 90s my cousin would have been all over this.

Tdcp · 30/11/2025 11:09

To be fair, if I had legs like that I would wear those slippers.. with one of those silky dressing gowns that has fluffy cuffs and collar, possibly holding a long cigarette holder even though I dont smoke.

Gowlett · 29/11/2025 22:28

I quite fancy the slippers…

Me too.😁

I've got one of those and it's brilliant - I use it all the time. Candles last much longer with it and I don't have to worry about them getting knocked over or accidentally left burning. Definitely not tat.

I already fell in love with them on another thread. Soooo tempted.

.

Tigergirl80 · 30/11/2025 12:58

I was looking at these yesterday. You can’t stand up and walk about with one on your feet. Or you forget go to stand up in a rush and go arse over tit. They did feel nice and cosy but just get a warm pair of slippers.

One Christmas my daughters favourite present was a pair of fishy’s pink fluffy boot slippers.😂😂😂

Emeraldforest · 30/11/2025 14:34

We love those very collectable soft toys in our family! My daughter(47) even collects discarded teddies that people throw out.

Edited

I have a medieval cat phone case….

Coldfeetalways · 30/11/2025 16:05

PoppyWarrior · 29/11/2025 23:04

@Coldfeetalways, did they let you get it???

I did. It's still in her bedroom. It's horrendous but it made a 3 year old happy. (It was not £50, maybe someone wants a second hand one and I'll make some money back!)

Euphesia · 30/11/2025 17:35

Coldfeetalways · 29/11/2025 21:48

This was the present one of my kids wanted one year (it was the only thing most of her class was asking for) it sold out locally really quickly.
This was covid times (I think 2020?) and there were still travel restrictions. I sourced one but in Ireland (I live in Northern Ireland) and was stopped by police going over the border (I have an English car registration) asking where I was going. I had to explain that Santa had been asked for a pooping flamingo and it had been such a crappy year that kids had missed so much so I was going to collect the pooping flamingo.

I bet that's one they hadn't heard before! Did they let you?

rainbowunicorn22 · 30/11/2025 18:45

When I was younger, I used to drool over these heeled hostess slippers in mum's catalogue. a bit of fur on the front and heeled quite high, oh I would so love them clicking and clacking round the house in a silky gown, sheer sophistication now I am old and wearing soft fluffy granny slippers!
