Anecdote about wanking off three men in a random wood in Edinburgh or something. Everyone laughed hysterically.

Is it just me or have TV chat shows gone really downhill? Confused

I think she is just a silly woman and a lot of the time she is spouting opinions about things she knows nothing about. The swearing/rude stories are for shock value and not funny. For a supposedly intelligent woman, she doesn’t act it.

Clawdy · 29/11/2025 08:04

Can't stand her, so didn't watch.

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 29/11/2025 08:08

I think she's vile, but while people continue to laugh at her stories she'll continue to tell them.

Many years ago when I was working backstage of a play that she was in....I'm saying no more than that for fear of outing.

Wow, that's horrible. I met her a couple of times through work years ago and while she wasn't "on" and was a bit brusque, she never said anything like that.

This is so true. I've recently watched a few old episodes of Call my Bluff and Face the Music. I watched these as a child and they were mainstream TV. Watching them now, the guests, the topics, the level of sophistication is startling compared to the fodder we get fed by broadcasters now. Bread and circuses springs to mind.

they smoke on the set as well!

I have to say, don't watch Graham Norton anymore, celebs taking turns to tell all these contrived stories one after the other really does get boring. Plus, I always found he gave the (often lone) woman much less air time than the men, but maybe I made that up!

I read a fascinating article about why it’s like that, rather than being in-depth and more unpredictable like Parkinson – I wish I could find it again, but it said there was deliberate policy at the BBC to avoid any risk of conversations getting into difficult territory like depression.

The strange thing was that it wasn’t really fears around broadcasting the content, as such – the reason was actually out of a perceived duty of care towards the guests, and the idea that a host can lure guests into sharing things they might not necessarily want to share.

i saw her on something years ago with Justin Fletcher (Mr Tumble) and she was absolutely vile to him. She really embarrassed him, she said ‘I’ve never heard of you’ and basically called him fat. He seemed such a sweet, quiet man and I hated her for it. Cannot stand her.

That’s decided it for me, nobody disrespects Justin Fletcher! “Something special” was my son’s favourite TV programme when he was little - the only thing he would sit still and watch.

When? About five minutes ago.

Sorry but I feel that woman is a vile, crude troll. I have no idea why people give her air space. Let her move to Australia as she loves it there (and hates it here) or at least confine her to Ch5.

TiredyMcTired · 29/11/2025 08:18

I always thought it was just me who thought she was awful, and not funny whatsoever - so I am fascinated to read this thread and see so many of my thoughts about her articulated by others. I do think she is articulate but she uses that to be rude and often insult people, rather than to demonstrate any intelligence and real wit in her anecdotes. There is something about her that is so desperate for attention and ‘shock’ value that is very very uncomfortable to watch.
Just because she is an elderly lady, it does not make her behaviour funny or endearing. It is cringeworthy and embarrassing.

staringatthesun · 29/11/2025 08:22

GumFossil · 28/11/2025 23:35

As soon as we saw she was a guest, we switched it off. She’s become a tiresome parody of herself. ‘Ooh, is she going to say something sexual and people think risqué?’ Yes. Yawn.

We did the same. I enjoy Graham Norton, and he usually has great guests. She is an immediate channel change in our house.

Agree - her behaviour has largely been like this for at least 15 years or so, so I feel no compunction ot forgive her because she is ‘old’. My adorable DPiLs are old, and my DFiL has a saucy tale or two to tell, but I have never in 34 years every heard either swear (beyond ‘bloody’), tell sexual stories/jokes nor be abusive to another living soul.

ProfessorBinturong · 28/11/2025 23:31

Three men in a wood? It used to be 1 man in a tree. That must have lost its shock value.

haha this! I specifically remember her telling this story years ago on GN and it was a man in a tree.

I used to think she was mildy amusing but now I just think this is literally her entire personality and its grating - she's like a carry on film in human form.

Tedious and attention seeking.

MajesticWhine · 29/11/2025 08:29

I switched over because I couldn’t stand the cringe but it’s a shame because I missed Jessie J who I like.

BackToLurk · 29/11/2025 08:30

OtterlyAstounding · 29/11/2025 07:46

See, that's the thing - what kind of message is that for her to be putting out there as if it's a funny little mishap?

"Oh, if you see a sexual predator wanking off in public then you should encourage him in his predation by 'pleasantly' finishing him off, and then if another predator is hiding in the bushes and asks you to wank him off too, you just CAN'T say no."

It's the sort of attitude that screams, "Well, men wouldn't have a need to rape if women just satisfied them, would they? Even I do it, and I'm a lesbian. Don't make a fuss, darling, it's only wanking him off!"

🤢🤮 It's so bizarre, like she's siding with sexual predators and making them out to be poor, neglected souls who just needed her 'help'.

Thank you. You beat me to it. That’s exactly how I feel and I think was Alexander Skaarsgard’s point.

Autumngirl5 · 29/11/2025 08:31

She is awful, so crude and I don’t watch people who think it funny to be crude for the sake of it. Horrible old woman.

I watched an episode of CMB when my 25 year old son was in the room. Started with him saying “wtf is this”. Ended with him trying to guess the definition.

Arregaithel · 29/11/2025 06:39

For all the consternation, the absolute beauty of this thread is that Miriam, herself, would not give a hoot 😆

Totally disagree with this. People who gurn and posture like she does for attention do it because their ego requires it. If she wasnt getting the attention, she'd be furious.

Also, if she truly didnt care then she wouldnt be so abrasively rude about others. If you genuinely dont care, you dont unleash a tirade of abuse at people who might disagree with your approach or opinions.

She cares. Very much so.

Purplebunnie · 29/11/2025 08:39

I switched over the minute I saw she was on. It's not just the vulgarity, she's not a very nice person and I refuse to give her air time

maxicake · 29/11/2025 08:39

I was in the live audience for this show! And she actually got the most time of any of the other guests. She had some far more interesting and funny stories they chose to cut out though. There was a great one with the Queen which was more entertaining (and normal) so I don’t know why they focus on this tired old one - which is tbf gross. The guests all got on really well and were chatting cozily when not filming. I wish Jessie J had more air time as she told a really touching story about meeting Kate as 2 mums who recovered from breast cancer that never made it in - and she’s very interesting as a person.

MadinMarch · 29/11/2025 08:39

PuppyMonkey · 28/11/2025 23:43

I was embarrassed for the other guests having to laugh and clap as if it was the height of witty banter. And she kept interrupting the others to say a banal thing. Cringed.

Exactly this! She's so egotistical, I can't bear her, and have never understood why so many people find her entertaining.

Matsukaze · 29/11/2025 08:41

JulianFawcettMP · 29/11/2025 00:03

She revolts me. I wish she didn't but there is no need for the tedious coarseness. Used sparingly it could potentially be funny (maybe) but that's lost on her

I guess you won't be buying her new book then 😆

77ner · 29/11/2025 08:43

GeorgeEdwardsMum · 29/11/2025 00:56

If she was male she'd have been cancelled years ago.

Exactly. Imagine a man joking about ‘doing’ three women in a forest and everyone laughing their heads off.

I honestly think the ‘old lady says a lot of dirty, shocking things’ is very out of date.

Superhansrantowindsor · 29/11/2025 08:46

she is foul mouthed. Which is fine if you know your company and audience but I’ve seen her use disgusting language in earshot of young children. People seem to find it funny - old lady says rude word.
As mother would say- it’s not big and it’s not clever. It shows you have a limited vocabulary.

TwistedWonder · 29/11/2025 08:46

She had her moment 20 years ago when her vulgarity was considered amusing but she’s a tired old bore now still going for shock value m. Mist people no longer interested in hearing her tales of wanking men off in dark alleys - it’s not shocking or hilarious, it’s boring

notacooldad · 29/11/2025 08:47

I think it's great to see a woman who doesn't care what anyone thinks and who breaks all the rules about how women are supposed to behave. I find it very cheering
I wouldnt like the same level of vulgarity and behaviour coming from a man when im watching a chat show. Its not a race to the bottom of the pile.

If you dont like it watch something else.
I do when its been programme that she has been the main character such as her trip around Australia but its not much fun switching off when she is a guest on a talk show and you want to hear the other guests.
I have never been a fan of her.
