Anecdote about wanking off three men in a random wood in Edinburgh or something. Everyone laughed hysterically.

Is it just me or have TV chat shows gone really downhill? Confused

People will talk, yes. Narrow minded people who in 2025 are apparently are still shocked and disgusted by an older woman telling dirty jokes 😏

I'm not opposed to many dirty - or even downright offensive - jokes in the right setting. I have several older female family members in their 70s who tell the most hilarious, crass stories that leave everyone laughing despite themselves, but MM's are of a different ilk.

Talking about how, in her youth, she felt she 'couldn't say no' to wanking off several men indecently exposing themselves and masturbating in public (aka sexual predators) isn't really a joke.
It's an apparently true story about how a young lesbian felt as though she had to sexually satisfy several sexual predators in order to 'support the troops' or some nonsense, but really it was quite pleasant and not a big deal at all, even though she felt as though she couldn't say no.

I'm sure she intended it to be an amusing anecdote but it's really quite bizarre and disturbing. And the way she keeps trotting out her few 'escapades' with men is odd. Doesn't she have any funny lesbian anecdotes to share?

So if you watched it, you’d have seen AS say “you absolutely could say no”. MM could have said “yes I know that now” or “and that’s what I’d tell women now” or whatever. Something that would indicate some kind of recognition that maybe not being able to say no isn’t a particularly healthy message

Do you give men ‘of a different era’ a free pass too? “Oh don’t mind Bob slapping your arse, he’s of a different era”.

Sorry but that is ridiculous. MM has not sexually harassed anyone.

I agree - it's really not a great message. I don't think that's what lies behind people's descriptions of her as 'vile' and 'vulgar' though.

OK - so would it be ok for Bob to talk about slapping your arse, or feeling some woman’s tits, or giving them oral sex in the park?

Or even funny stories about places she’s been and people she’s met? It doesn’t have to be all sex and farting, surely?

Let me introduce you to Men. They are a different beast.

No, that’s not good enough. If it’s not ok for Bob (and it’s not) it’s not OK for Miriam either.

Having a women on the screen who is old, fat, not conventionally attractive, not apologetic, talks about how much money she earns, and tells filthy stories is all very, very taboo in our society. It's all excellent stuff.

As a PP suggested. Do you thing the fat, old, not conventionally attractive woman would get airtime without the filthy stories? You know, if we just recognised her obvious talent as an actor and her intelligence? Isn’t it a bit depressing that a woman who’s been working as an actress for 6 decades is primarily known and promoted for her ‘filthy stories’? That’s not what I’d consider any kind of progress.

I can assure you the average men would be delighted at a young woman coming up to him and wanting to wank him off. Yep, it's gross. That's men.

To compare it to a woman being groped is obviously ridiculous.

Are you serious?

You seem to like humour at its lowest denominator so why not them too? Or is it only crass, vulgar women you approve of? If Miriam wasn’t Oxbridge educated and just came from a rough council estate and worked at the local chippy would you be championing her coarseness and vulgarity quite so much?

I was comparing the tendency of some people to excuse shitty behaviour because the person concerned is “of a different era”. But I suspect you knew that.

That's the point of the humour - we find it funny coming from a 'posh' person.

Again, LMAO at this description of me. I really, really don't like vulgar humour.

It's not 'shitty behaviour' - it's sad. It's messed up. Thank goodness times have changed.

TheFifthTellytubby · 29/11/2025 13:42

I never watch her when she guests on chat shows as can't stand how she resorts to shocking people just for the sake of it. It's also disrespectful to the other guests, who are forced to laugh politely and pretend to be amused. It's a shame as I find her very engaging and talented as an actor - hilarious in Blackadder and brilliant as the mother abbess in Call The Midwife! 🤔

I think most people just don't want to hear a celeb suddenly break out a story about their problematic sexploits on a talk show?

It's vulgar to force everyone to think in detail about your sexual activities, and I feel bad for the celebrities stuck on the couch with her, honestly. It's disrespectful of others' boundaries. They haven't consented to hear her talking about 'creaming her pants' over Laurence Olivier, or wanking a man off. It's like forcing everyone else to participate in your kink without consent.

If Ian McKellan sat down on the couch and said he got a 'raging hard-on' when he met Maggie Smith (for example) years ago, or recounted with relish that when he was a young man he'd finger-banged a woman who'd been hiding up a tree 'pleasuring' herself, and then felt he couldn't say no to the other woman hiding in a bush watching so finished her off too, and then trotted those same stories out at half the interviews he was in, I think a lot of people would consider him pretty vile!

The sexual politics between men and women in the different scenarios described are clearly entirely different.
