Teens and shaved eyebrows - WTF?!!

ForFucksFuckingSake · 27/11/2025 23:21

Teen DD shaved a slit into her eyebrow when she was 15, (heavily hidden for a few days by a gangly fringe).

Was not impressed, but with her being bi/gay (she flip-flops between definitions, which is fine!), I Googled a bit and found it was possibly something to do with LGBTQ+ signalling.

Again, no issues per-se - grew the eyebrow back in, and all good.

Now she's 17 (and started college thus year) the eyebrow slit has re-appeared!

I'm completely unreasonable in being cross, as it's her body, her life etc etc, and I'm an advocate for letting her express herself - she's finding her groove and her crowd, which is a joy to witness.

But... it looks fucking stupid! 🤣 And I want my beautiful baby girl to not have a ridiculous gash in her eyebrow.

In your experience, MNers with bi/gay/undecided daughters, is this a signalling thing or is this HORRIFIC mutilation just 'in' at the moment?

No issues with the signalling, but couldn't she just wear her 'Hold my drink while I kiss your girlfriend' t-shirt and be done with it?! The stupid eyebrow on her gorgeous little face makes me so mad! 🤣🤣

Can I just check, this is about 0.5cm of shaved hair? Not some kind of decorative scarification or extreme body modification? Because ‘slit’, ‘gash’, ‘horrific mutilation’ is all a bit much. What words are you gonna have left when you discover her secret tattoos? 😂

....Or her secret piercings! 😆

YABU

WearyAuldWumman · 27/11/2025 23:32

It goes in and out of fashion. I recall that the Ruby Sunday character on 'Doctor Who' had wee bit shaved out of an eyebrow. I actually thought that she looked okay. I'm a straight 65 yr old.

Onemoreagainforluck · 27/11/2025 23:38

So I've got alopecia. I don't have any eyebrows and actually I've found not having any eyebrows more embarrassing than not having hair on my head because I wear a wig to cover my baldness.

When I read your thread title I was very interested. I just googled eyebrow shaving and I had no idea that some women are actually shaving off their eyebrows for fashion.

Personally, as some one who would love to have eyebrows, I think it's crazy. But on the other hand I hope it becomes a common sight so I won't feel like such a freak..

Ketzele · 28/11/2025 00:03

Well, I'm a gay mum but both my dds are straight and both of them have shaved lines into their eyebrows at times. I have no idea if its signalling anything. But 'mutilation' -really? Seems to me a very safe way to express themselves and will of course grow back. Let her be!

BauhausOfEliott · 28/11/2025 09:07

Why does it matter whether it’s a ‘signalling thing’ or just a style choice?

Honestly, you’re being a bit weird about this. It’s eyebrow hair, not a DIY tongue-split.

CuriousKangaroo · 28/11/2025 09:11

It a silly fashion choice. Teenagers have been making silly fashion choices for decades, as will future teenagers for decades more. I think you are overreacting.

NerrSnerr · 28/11/2025 09:11

It’s an eyebrow with a bit shaved off. Bit extreme to call it a ‘horrific mutilation’. What happens with she gets a piercing or a tattoo? Just leave her to express herself- I’m sure that you made fashion choices as a teen that your parents didn’t think much of.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 28/11/2025 09:16

On the other hand, with your shock and distress about an eyebrow style, she’ll never need to do anything particularly risky to rebel and pushback!

Sartre · 28/11/2025 09:19

Nothing new, it was fashionable when I was a young teen. I tried to do it and ended up shaving half my eyebrow off. Looked like such an idiot.

snoopythebeagle · 28/11/2025 09:22

Have you considered getting a grip?

JudgeBread · 28/11/2025 09:23

Well I'm 34 and straight and this was very much a thing when I was a teenager, not a gay thing.

It's just a trend that goes in and out. Maybe it's more popular amongst LGBT teens this time around, who knows? Who cares?

Have you tried the fake tattoo eyebrows, i bought some ridiculously cheap on temu in the hope they would give mine a better shape, they were not right for me because they stuck to the hair i have so weren't even but they were really realistic on a bare arm. Slightly shiny round the edges like kids fake tattoos but a bit of face powder might make that less noticeable, there are also probably better more expensive versions around too.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/11/2025 09:31

Do you not remember the 90s OP? (please God tell me you're not too young, I'm not that old!)

Everyone and their dog had a line shaved in their eyebrow - Brian Harvey is the one that springs immediately to mind.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 28/11/2025 09:32

Yeah i remember Bowie shaving all his brows off. Even as a daft 13 year old fan I thought it looked stupid. Now pop stars are doing it again. Still looks daft. A little slit in the brow? Couldn't be arsed.

Oh I'll have a look for these.
Many thanks.

It’s not a gay signalling thing, it’s just in fashion at the moment. This is an over reaction to say the least

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/11/2025 10:32

I read the eyebrow cut meant you'd been in prison and obvs wanted everyone to know

My daughter uses those as she used to pluck her eyebrows when stressed as a teenager and now they don't grow at all. You have to be careful how you clean around them or the edges lift up and look awful but she can usually manage getting them to last 3 days before putting new ones on.

Edit - a shaved eyebrow was around during the New Romantics era of Duran Duran, Soft Cell etc. It's not a new thing at all.

ForFucksFuckingSake · 28/11/2025 11:25

Ha ha! Sorry - I've read that back this morning (may have had a wine or two last night!), and I have used some very OTT language and may be overreacting! It was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, so apologies if it didn't read like that!

Its just such a stupid look IMO, but appreciate that it's not the end of the world. Am deffo waiting for the ill-advised tattoos - i know they're coming!

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 28/11/2025 11:27

Of all the things in all the world that a teenager can do, shaving a weee slit in their eyebrow is so inconsequential, I don’t really know how best to start. Let it go, pal.

Lemonyyy · 28/11/2025 12:15

My dd has done this. I think it looks daft (along with the mullet, the patterns shaved in the undercut, and the big plastic jewellery) but it ultimately doesn’t really anyone so I just leave her to it. They’ll all look back on it one day and cringe, much as I do about some of my 15 year old self’s fashion choices!

SnappyJadeJoker · 28/11/2025 12:17

I'm 35. I had a weird eyebrow slit somewhere around 2005. I had an undercut (bottom half head shaved. And i kept my local super drug going in black eyeliner and white make up powder. Most of my outfits consisted to my.parents horror of small amounts of lace and pvc. I drank more cider than I ever did water

Now I'm a boring mum of 2, run my own perfectly legal business, drive a mid size SUV and for the most part I've only had relationships with men.

She'll be fine.

Om a side note apparently owning an ikea toy shark means your secretly trans.

That’s not shaved. It’s a scar through injury when she was small.
