Teens and shaved eyebrows - WTF?!!

Teen DD shaved a slit into her eyebrow when she was 15, (heavily hidden for a few days by a gangly fringe).

Was not impressed, but with her being bi/gay (she flip-flops between definitions, which is fine!), I Googled a bit and found it was possibly something to do with LGBTQ+ signalling.

Again, no issues per-se - grew the eyebrow back in, and all good.

Now she's 17 (and started college thus year) the eyebrow slit has re-appeared!

I'm completely unreasonable in being cross, as it's her body, her life etc etc, and I'm an advocate for letting her express herself - she's finding her groove and her crowd, which is a joy to witness.

But... it looks fucking stupid! 🤣 And I want my beautiful baby girl to not have a ridiculous gash in her eyebrow.

In your experience, MNers with bi/gay/undecided daughters, is this a signalling thing or is this HORRIFIC mutilation just 'in' at the moment?

No issues with the signalling, but couldn't she just wear her 'Hold my drink while I kiss your girlfriend' t-shirt and be done with it?! The stupid eyebrow on her gorgeous little face makes me so mad! 🤣🤣

That’s not shaved. It’s a scar through injury when she was small.

Ah, I didn't realise. I thought I'd seen her with 'ordinary' eyebrows in something else. Thank you for letting me know.

I went through phases of shaving my eyebrows off completely during my teenage goth phase. Then I did it again a few years ago at 30. Then I got an undercut shaved in this year. Now I'm an older woman with a 'big' job, and I'm considering losing the 'brows again. Sometimes it just never leaves you, and I've found that people don't generally care!

ForFucksFuckingSake · 28/11/2025 13:09

I'll get over it, I'm sure! It's just so daft, but yes, I made many, many fashion faux-pas as a kid including secret tatts and piercings, so i guess I should count my blessings!

Onemoreagainforluck, I don't have alopecia but don't have brows, I have them tattooed. They do fade over time but just get them "topped up" every few years. Love them. Look up SPMU brows near you but do make sure one with good reviews !

It goes in and out of fashion. I recall that the Ruby Sunday character on 'Doctor Who' had wee bit shaved out of an eyebrow. I actually thought that she looked okay. I'm a straight 65 yr old.

Millie Gibson, the actor who played the part of Ruby Sunday, actually has an eyebrow SCAR, from an incident when she was young.

Thank you. Yes, a PP explained that to me upthread.

Its a thing nowadays - ignore, and let it go? xx

CrossChecking · 28/11/2025 23:33

My dd is 16 and has done this on and off for a few years. I can't say it bothers it me. She is straight so not a bi/gay thing just a fashion thing.

Sounds like an improvement on really thick, unattractive eyebrows that are tattooed on. Or, the ones that look like fat slugs, hairy caterpillars or something nasty that crawled out of the woodwork and onto someone's face.

Then shrivelled up and died there

Don't worry she will get over this phase.
And to you she will always be your gorgeous little baby girl
😻

Oh I'll have a look for these.
Many thanks.

They also sell them on Amazon pretty cheap. There are YouTube videos on how to use them and reviews.
I tried them as I'm fed up with the time it takes to draw mine on (over plucking years ago) and with practice they look good.

My ds (straight) had a slit shaved out of his eyebrow in the summer holidays, just for a laugh.
It refused to grow back for about 3 months, which was quite funny as he had to start 6th form with it, and he knew it looked daft. I was a bit embarrassed for him, but not horrified.
Kindly, I think your response is a bit extreme. It's a fashion thing, not AFAIK anything to do with sexuality, and reversible.
If she had flesh tunnels or a tattoo on her neck, I could understand your concern.
