I learned that (presumably fully functioning) adults use words like "horrid" and "yummy" in everyday conversations.

Once the washing machine cycle has finished, do a rinse and spin!

Why?

Mumsnet is the only place I’ve come across people who when deciding on a name for their baby the name of the sibling matching it is a factor.
Example being.. I want to call my baby Molly but I have a son called Matthew, would it be unreasonable?
…. Yes!! You can’t have two M names, they are children not M&M’s!

I was at school with my same initial sibling and it was hell. I used to get into trouble for their missed music lessons (I don't play any instrument) and their missed detentions. The missed music lessons thing continued after they had left!

Oh wow you must have started even younger than me unless twins, sometimes I wish I’d had all my kids closer in age instead of leaving a massive gap. Would certainly make days out easier

16, 17 and 18. Then a four year gap and then another three. I must've been mad! 🤣

Sometimes the things that I come across on here that I’ve never encountered in real life, it’s because they are very trivial things that you wouldn’t usually discuss. We often just assume that whatever we grow up with in our own family is what everyone else does.

Example - I was quite disconcerted to find out from MN that some people eat Weetabix with hot milk. I’ve never come across that in real life (and tbh think it sounds grim but life would be boring if we were all the same!)

I used to feed my toddlers weetabix with hot milk. It's lovely and warm for winter. Sometimes I'd use formula milk with it for babies too.

moto748e · 30/11/2025 13:19

There's another way to eat Weetabix?

Yes, I’ve always found this deeply weird!

When I worked at a nursery potties, children's toys and duplo bricks would go in the same dishwasher the children's food utensils, cups and plates. Not at the same time though.

That a chicken lasts all week for some on MN.

Have you actually seen a post that says that?

Not other posts referring to it but an actual poster suggesting it's possible?

Well, it’s more that it’s a long running forum joke based on some performative parsimony about how long you could pad out leftovers. See also ‘massive salad’.

Lucelady · 30/11/2025 14:44

According to the chefs in my family chicken can only be eaten for two days after the original cooking.

I buy two large chickens and get a roast, risotto and a soup. We're four adults and big scoffers.

When I was young, I considered Stockport part of the deep south. I've mellowed a bit since then an am prepared to admit it is indeed in the north. Sheffield, for example, I'm not so sure about.

Exactly, yet ita being mentioned as an actual thing that posters believe mumsneters do

Lucelady · 30/11/2025 16:21

@NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause its used by the same crowd who all claim to be a size 6/8 and a 14 is huge.

I only know one size 10 but I do live in the country and I'm oldish.

" I was quite disconcerted to find out from MN that some people eat Weetabix with hot milk" That's the only way I've known how to eat Weetabix since childhood, though have since heard vague rumours about people eating them dry with butter on.

Me too. I can't imagine eating weetabix cold. Just seems like a wad of sawdust floating in your bowl. If you have it nice and hot, it's like tasty porridge.

Yeah and not 'Mummy', 'Daddy' and 'I love you' to parents or children. Just not said up here. ILY is reserved for sexual contexts.

A chicken does last me a week (or a week's worth of dinners) but I'm only cooking for myself, freeze some leftovers, make stock etc. I've never posted about it though (until now).

What, people don’t say ‘I love you’ to their kids and kids don’t say it back to them??? 🥺

Yes. There are people who don't. My parents never said it to me or my siblings, but I knew they loved us anyway. It really wasn't as common then as it is now, in the same way that hugging everybody hello or goodbye wasn't done much in the 70s and 80s - at least, that's how it was where I grew up.
