I’ll start

it being a commonly held idea that itv is uncouth and bbc is the classy alternative

I’ve always known that somehow (without anyone actually saying it).
I had no idea that one small organic chicken was supposed to feed a family of four for an entire week.

The Script

Jollyjoy · 27/11/2025 20:15

I have not heard that til now!

I was really shocked how many people thought a whole day in jammies is ‘slovenly’ and just generally unacceptable. And the threads where everything is ‘vile’ - strict judgement if sheets, towels, jammies are not changed within very specific timescales. I had no idea people had such strong views on that stuff. I find it fascinating.

WLINewbie · 27/11/2025 20:16

That everyone is obsessed with 'class'

Tryingatleast · 27/11/2025 20:17

About Cetaphil face wash- it’s been a game changer for me. I also didn’t know enough symptoms of menopause- I honestly thought I was going mad with some of my symptoms! Love mn!!

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 27/11/2025 20:19

That some people don't use a loo brush.

Oh and the baffling obsession with class.

Another one is having your kids in your 30s is middle class and the 20s is working class.
Because I was 16 with my first in apparently underclass 😂

I’m hooked on the baby name threads, people have such strong opinions. In the real world when someone tells me their babies name I can’t help thinking “that would not be popular on mumsnet” haha

What does that make the geriatric mother brigade? Aristocracy?

I didn’t know that about itv, I thought that was channel 5! Channel 4 has always been young and ‘woke’.

I didn't realise that so many people were so unaware of what words sound like in different accents. There are soooo many threads on MN where people argue about pronunciation, saying 'But nobody pronounces it like that! It's just wrong', when actually loads of people do pronounce it like that, in accents you'll have heard on tv, on the radio or sometimes in person, probably every week throughout your life. I find it baffling that people can't just summon up or 'hear in their head' what a word sounds like in accents other than their own!

YouMightLikeCats · 27/11/2025 20:27

Sure I've mentioned it before but etiquette things like you're not meant to cut the point off a triangle of brie if served it at a buffet or meal.

No - the Script that cheaters and abusers typically follow.

I dunno - having a baby?

How to correctly decant an oxo cube from it's wrapper with the contents perfectly pourable and no messy fingers.

Every time I use an oxo cube I think of how this small gem of a design went unknown by me for so many, many years.

Never works for me. I'm probably cack-handed though!

Not really random nuggets but I realised That people earn way, way more than I do. I felt I was doing ok on £35k pa, but that’s seen as a complete pittance on here.

Also, I had no idea how many children have SEN

ResusciAnnie · 27/11/2025 20:32

Basically 100% of my knowledge of benefits comes from mumsnet (and is therefore absolutely not to be trusted 😅).

I'd be astonished if stats didn't show that young mothers are more likely to come from more socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. That doesn't mean all of them do though, obviously. Middle-class girls are more likely to go to uni and therefore take longer to get jobs and often get married later and have dc later.

I think the income threads go a certain way with people posting their huge salaries and then anyone on 20 or 30k is too embarrassed to post so it looks like everyone is on 100k
