What time is your first alcoholic drink Christmas Day

In a similar vein to the 'what time do you have Christmas dinner' thread, what time do you have your first alcoholic tipple?

Bucks Fizz with an early brekkie, a mimosa at 11am brunch, Fizz at midday before lunch or are you very restrained until later in the day? Or perhaps do all the aforementioned!

We used to go the whole hog with Bucks Fizz but now we walk mid morning with dog. In more recent years we've not had a first drink until we get to inlaws around 3pm earliest. Partner is heading for his second booze free Christmas too this year.

Thankfully my DH does the cooking so my morning champagne drinking doesn’t affect the dinner 😁

Same here 😃

HorrorFan81 · 27/11/2025 11:11

Previously I would have bucks fizz with present opening at 9am. This will be my first sober Christmas so planning on 0 alcohol prosecco version

pinkspeakers · 27/11/2025 11:11

Champagne with canapes just before Christmas lunch, so about 1pm?

Advocaat at about 11:30am 😀 family tradition ❤️

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 27/11/2025 11:18

About 11am as guests start to arrive, and as we start the main cooking for dinner. We eat from 1 - 1.30. Usually Buck's Fizz then we have wine with dinner.

GameOfJones · 27/11/2025 11:19

Coffee and present opening first thing and then DH and I will have Bucks Fizz with breakfast and DDs will have orange juice.....so maybe around 10am?

It is the one day of the year I would have alcohol before lunchtime.... I'm not sure why some PPs assume that we think morning drinking is part of our normal routine or that we're bladdered by the time the turkey's cooked.

Sunnyside4 · 27/11/2025 11:21

DH has his first drink around 11.30am, which just happens to coincide with my Mum arriving!

How can anyone think drinking alcohol in the morning is normal, seriously.

It’s also not ‘normal’ to come downstairs and open a stack of presents underneath a Christmas tree, or indeed have a tree decorated with baubles in the corner of the room, or many other things we do at Christmas but at no other time of year…

Communion wine at 00:10. I win. I usually neck Santa’s whiskey when I get home as easier than pouring it back in the bottle and seems a shame to pour it down the sink

Very sensible of Santa to not drink and ride.

Judgey much?

AutumnClouds · 27/11/2025 11:29

Sherry after midnight mass, and a bucks fizz with breakfast.

BillieWiper · 27/11/2025 11:31

I'd have my tea, then maybe a coffee then move onto the booze..or I might put Bailey's in my coffee! So maybe between 11-12? I don't serve dinner til about 5/6pm usually. But hoping to get it out for closer to 4 this year!

Um, it's not. Hence why the thread is about CHRISTMAS DAY.

longtompot · 27/11/2025 11:49

Fizz/Bucks fizz with breakfast around 10am which then carries on whilst present opening. It's normally Prosecco but we have found some good low or zero alcohol versions so will be able to drink more but still be with it 🥂

Allmarbleslost · 27/11/2025 11:52

We have dinner in the evening so I usually open the champagne about 5pm. Day time drinking sends me straight to sleep unfortunately.

TorroFerney · 27/11/2025 11:58

About two which is when guests come (fil and mother) and then a glass with late lunch about three. I have to be careful though not to have more than a couple of glasses these days whilst my mum is here in case the years of resentment of my childhood cause me to say something or react to some nonsense she’s spouting. In vino veritas and all that.

husband has a couple during the day as he has to collect and drop off the parents.

Have you never been in an airport at 7 am?

Well a) it's one day a year and b) looking at the responses, it is clearly not unusual on Christmas Day for an early tipple

Each to their own but I must admit I do find it strange that booze for breakfast is so popular, just because it's Christmas.

Especially when so many MNetters get judgy about parents having a glass of wine of an evening, 'in case the kids need to get to hospital', and all the other OTT responses all year round.

I also wonder if it adds to the rise in DV at Christmas time, when booze is being consumed from 6 or 7am.

ChateauProvence · 27/11/2025 17:36

Champagne with breakfast and while opening presents

AlltheHedgehogsontheWall · 27/11/2025 17:38

It's not really a focus for me, we enjoy watching the children open presents with our usual morning coffee and then I'll either be watching Christmas TV, playing with the kids or cooking. I might have a glass of fizz during that time but not a lot, I'm clumsy at the best of times and don't need to be burning myself or dropping pans of vegetables.

Topseyt123 · 27/11/2025 17:47

These days, it will probably be a couple of glasses of red wine when we go out for Christmas Dinner at the local pub/restaurant. That will be at about 1.30pm.

We used to have a Bucks Fizz breakfast but I really can't see that I'll be all that interested in that now. The idea just no longer appeals.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 27/11/2025 17:55

In the UK will have a baileys hot chocolate when we walk the dog around 9.30 then Prosecco for the rest of the day, (we don’t have a roast dinner to worry about cooking!)
when abroad it’s a champagne cocktail with breakfast!

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 27/11/2025 17:58

I drive out into the countryside with my dogs- like every other day of the year- on Christmas day.
So I would say around 5pmish with Christmas Dinner and the King's speech (recorded earlier)
