A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It's not the speech, it's watching how he wriggles as he responds to the journos' questions; it's a masterclass in prevarication.

Every time he opens his mouth it's painful. No one believes his lies - I doubt even he does. He's spewing out a hastily cobbled together narrative that won't fool anyone. He's hanging by the thinnest thread and he knows it. Imagine the drama and chaos behind the scenes.

marshmallowmix · 01/12/2025 12:50

Rachel Reeves needs to go, they want to hammer workers and won't cut the benefits spend she is more concerned about appeasing the Labour bank benchers than doing the best for the country,

I can't see how she and Starmer can last much longer.

She has been sentenced to two years, but I strongly disagree that she should be stripped of the whip, let alone forced out of parliament. She did not receive anything remotely resembling a fair trial. She was not allowed to know the charges and evidence against her. The lawyer she instructed to represent her was placed under house arrest and faced threats to his daughter. The anti-corruption commission in Dhaka, which led on the prosecution, repeatedly made statements to the press about her alleged culpability, which is not consistent with a fair, impartial trial. She was not given any opportunity to defend herself. That is why lawyers from both sides of the house wrote to the Bangladeshi High Commissioner in the UK protesting about the proceedings.

Having normal diplomatic relations with a country does not mean we automatically respect all their judicial decisions.

How do we know these assertions about a lack of information about charges and evidence are true?

And was there a lay jury? If not, how could statements by prosecutors affect the fairness of professional judges?

On this basis we wouldn’t respect most countries’ judicial decisions, including many European states and the US.

I'm interested to see whether he sacrifices Reeves or clings on to his closest ally until the bitter end when they both go. This is a true test of their relationship.

Don't let your politics blind you.

We would (and do) respect the judicial decisions of many countries, including most European states and the USA. We do not respect judicial decisions when the accused has clearly been denied any pretence of a fair trial, which is the case here. I don't care whether Siddiq is Labour, Tory, Reform or whatever. I will not condemn her on the basis of a clearly biased trial. If she gets a fair trial and is convicted, that would be another matter.

I’m not blinded by my politics, and I recognise that we withhold extradition, domestication of foreign courts’ judgments and so on, depending on circumstances.

But I want to know how you’re so sure that this case is tainted and that Siddiq couldn’t have had a fair hearing had she attended. The prosecution apparently produced evidence of Siddiq’s Bangladeshi citizenship, which she had denied, for example. I don’t know whether those facts are true, but I doubt you do either.

I’m not sure that you’re looking at this neutrally.

I know for certain that the lawyer she appointed to defend her was arrested and threats were made against his daughter, leading him to withdraw from the case. No other lawyer was willing to take the case on. I know some of the UK lawyers who have looked into this and who are certain that this was a kangaroo court, not a fair trial. I trust their judgement.

They have lied continually, and on such a huge scale about such huge things. And yet they seem untouchable. We would expect that they would have no option to resign and yet they seem like they are in for the long haul, nothing is going to get rid of them. It's frightening.

I think they’ll stay for now but the local elections will be another shock. Going back to the last and the reversal of WFA, these will be the same maybe worse and MPs will then start panicking.

It's so similar to what happened to 'Lucy Connelly' convicted because of Government bullies ! Funny that isn't . Yet Darren Jones (Rachel's Assistant) was calling out the Bangadelsh Government for a 'Miscarriage' of justice ...

I see your point and while I agree that there might not be enough compelling reasons for the whip to be removed from her, if there are indeed doubts about the validity of the verdict, I think she ought to resign as MP herself.

If there is even a shadow of the doubt then it damages Labour, and it's the last thing they need now.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 01/12/2025 16:48

Sorry, I think I quoted the wrong poster.

A day of not working will do that to you.

Interrupting my singing and dancing to say that...

Richard Hughes has resigned

If I'd been paying attention today, I think my head would be spending from all this politicking.

Right - back to work now.

AlexandraBee · 01/12/2025 17:12

This stinks. Like the estate agent was blamed. It’s always someone else’s fault with this sad incompetent bitter Labour government.

Richard Hughes resigns as OBR chief
The head of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has resigned.

Richard Hughes came under fire last week after the fiscal watchdog's forecast - and all the major budget policies - appeared online ahead of Rachel Reeves's announcement.
In the wake of the fiasco, Hughes said he would abide by the recommendations of the inquiry his organisation launched, and that he serves as long as he has the confidence of the chancellor.

In a letter to both the chancellor and the chair of the Treasury select committee, he confirmed his departure.

"The inadvertent early dissemination of our Economic and fiscal outlook on 26 November was a technical but serious error," he wrote.

Politics latest: OBR chief Richard Hughes resigns over budget leak

It comes after an investigation into the leak of Rachel Reeves's budget described it as the worst mistake in the Office for Budget Responsibility's 15-year history.

Completely agree. Labour are a blaming machine wrecking ball.

Even, the Boys at DS's school have caught on to the fact that Keir Starmer A W...... Quite funny accept DS along with four other boys have got an after School Detention for shouting it out. I have no doubt DS has got the saying from DH who is acting like 'Dudley Moore' Arthur at the moment.

This to 'bollock' him why he has just bought a Mercedes A Class for 16 year old Daughter when we currently have four cars. Apparently he needs to show the staff that he has 'downsized' his transport , hence he will be using the A Class is fourth car opposed to his 'second' 'A Range Rover until the economy has recovered . When I told him he is a 'Starmer' he responded it is Expensive because it is on a PCP at £350 a month and will be a great car for an 18 year old girl. I really could Punch Him.

redange · 01/12/2025 17:54

It is not Expensive...

hamstersarse · 01/12/2025 17:59

They are so obviously 💯 out of touch with almost everyone who lives in the UK, today has continued to prove that.

In my optimistic brain I thought the OBR affair would be enough to exercise some humility, maybe some integrity, maybe even service to voters, and both Starmer and Reeves would resign. However what I fear now is their lack of connection to what’s going on means they think this is just a blip, par for the course when you make ‘tough decisions’. They’ll probably be quoting terrible motivational quotes to each other along the lines of breaking eggs to make an omelette. They think this is ‘just politics’ so they’ll double down and go nowhere. They don’t see how news is passed around these days, they are so ignorant of X, Reddit, mumsnet even! They’ve no idea of the talk, the total destruction of trust that’s happened,

When Starmer said to Kemi the other day she spends too much time on ‘Twitter’ I really thought….Keir my dear, you really should check out the comments on your X account. Really you should.

I honestly don't know enough about it to be able to say one way or another.

I know an Indian woman whose very wealthy father died. Think private jets lifestyle. She was left a substantial inheritance which she fought to receive for three years. Her mother and brother in India used every nefarious trick to ensure she never saw a penny. The lawyers here were stymied at every turn.

I'm not surprised by the way the courts work there.

100 jobs lost at North Sea energy firm as Labour tax regime blamed.

Trump offered to take the North sea oilfields off Starmers hands. I wonder if he'll succeed.

It really is quite mad .
