Tax TAx TAX!!!!!! Fuming at our government!

1000 replies

Baldylovingbeard · 26/11/2025 13:29

please try and convince me otherwise…..

What a joke this government are!!! ( UK)

Let’s just tax everyone who earns a bit of cash!!! Oh and while we’re at it… go on have loads more children it’s ok others will pay for them!!! Cutting the 2child benefit cap! If you decide to have multiple children you should be able to afford to provide for them. NOT expect others too!!!!! If you fall on hard times and you’ve worked and contributed to paying tax than you are within your rights to claim tax this is what benefits were made for, it’s not a means to not work, have more kids….etc!

Oh and if you work really hard and want to put some money by for you later days in life…. You’ll be taxed!

My situation:
Part time work, full time mum to 1 child. I work for myself and earn around 10k this money usually pays for things our daughter needs… clothes, clubs, any treats.
Husband works long hours, his under a lot of stress with his job, he has worked his way to and earns a very good salary 100k he gets taxed 60% you do the maths on that! We live in a 3 bed around £280k so nothing crazy but live within our means. We have one car! One holiday a year! Put money into savings! Pension! our daughter goes to one after school club. My husband got kicked out of home at 16…. He has worked with no help from family or friends and I believe he has worked very hard to get to where he is now. we are generous with charity’s and try our best to help out when we can if we can!

Everyone for themselves.

Meaning what?

thankgoditssaturday · 26/11/2025 17:36

Well sort it like we did as a couple. I dropped to 4 days a week and now earn £58k not £70k. DH got a higher paid job at £40k. We are not earning much less that we were due to not paying as much tax. You have a choice.

kornwall · 26/11/2025 17:36

Coffeeandbooks88 · 26/11/2025 17:34

Yes but if they don't work or have disabilities they will be benefit capped.

And? there are plenty who won't be capped, the reason we know they are not all going to be capped is the predicted cost. If it was a small amount of difference there wouldn't be such a furore, but it is thousands and thousands being dished out to these families.

The poor in workhouses worked.

The poor today too often stay in bed, whilst others work.

And the poor back then didn't have access to effective contraception. They do now. Yet we still see non-earners having a child by every man they get together with.

Meaning what?

Pay for your own healthcare, children, food and housing. Get a job.

Benefits only for those with extreme disability, for example Muscular Dystrophy. Or temporarily, for unexpected redundancy for example.

bootle96 · 26/11/2025 17:36

So sick of this ridiculous drama. Especially by people like the OP who clearly know nothing about tax rules. Get a grip. Im a medium earner, im happy to pay tax because I want to live in a country with functioning public services and I’m happy to support those who need it. When did society become so fucking selfish.

Probably right about the time when welfare was widened to being a lifestyle choice instead of merely a safety net.

You know "There's plenty of money, it's just in the wrong hands."

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 26/11/2025 17:41

Sorry. Can't take anyone seriously who is pleading hardship while wailing "We have one car!!!!"

True. It feels like a complete piss take and I’m starting to feel super resentful. (if you didn’t notice).

The government are useless. The very rich are indeed getting richer, there IS a community of work-shy also taking the Mick and the middle pay for everyone.

It’s wrong. It’s the government’s fault ultimately for making economic errors that end up meaning we owe the rich more and more. I’m not just talking Labour here, who are utterly clueless…but the Conservatives too.

People seem to forget that tax rates were much higher before the 2000s. Tory governments want to keep rates low so that people spend, but the problem is that whilst people are happy buying shit consumables, there isn't any money for the country's infrastructure. We cant have it all.

Does anyone really think that people are having babies to claim child benefit. It's like £20 a week. Which is great and helps those of us on low incomes. But it's not gonna keep a child fgs.

The two-child cap doesn't apply to Child Benefit! It applies to means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit (UC).

Under UC a household can claim £3.5k tax-free per year per dependent child, if its income is sufficiently low.

Previously this was only paid for the first 2 children. Now there is no limit. So if there are 5 dependent children an additional £10.5k in benefits (tax-free) can be claimed per year.

I am very angry at this betrayal of financially responsible families who only have one or two children and will now pay additional tax to pay for this

Overall tax burden wasn't higher

The government have already addressed this.

Really because my friend had to pay £200 for her child’s school uniform (had to be school branded trousers etc.)?

ledmeup · 26/11/2025 17:09

@Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim im
confused as to why euthanasia over a care home will save lots of money? For one not everyone ends up in a care home & they are often self funded. Which bit confused you?

Edited

“In 2023/24, total expenditure on adult social care rose to £32.0 billion, an increase of 12.8% in cash terms and 6.3% in real terms from 2022/23.”

It’s just my prediction. I think they’ll start with the elderly and then start normalising “being kind” and allowing other people to opt out of life.
We have huge growing problems that are seemingly impossible for governments to solve.
I hope I’m wrong.

The benefit cap is still in place.

Well, I don't enjoy getting flamed, hence most of my opinions never make it to the keyboard, so I respectfully decline. Sorry.

Well I could have predicted that answer to be honest (ie you don’t have any really justifiable reasons).

Horserider5678 · 26/11/2025 17:46

ledmeup · 26/11/2025 13:35

Should your DH pay less tax because he came from nothing?

I think scrapping the 2 child policy is the right thing to do, it won’t lead to lots of new babies.

Yes, the frozen tax bands are frustrating and I had hoped they would be lifted. I think child benefit should be universal.

Rubbish, the 2 child cap should stay! These families are going to get up to 14k extra a year funded by those of us who work hard! Benefits should be capped to the minimum wage. Multiple children are a lifestyle choice and unless people have a dramatic change in circumstances the cap should stay! You’re very short sighted if you don’t think people on. Benefits will have more children, they’re now actually being paid to have them!

kornwall · 26/11/2025 17:47

CJones11 · 26/11/2025 17:45

The benefit cap is still in place.

And there are many many many exceptions as you well know. You seem to be suggesting that the overall benefit cap means that there won't be large handouts. If that is the case then why is it being costed at such a high level?

The tax burden is a record high in a few years.

Also you must be gifting him 10 % of your personal allowance as married couples are entitled to do

This only applies to basic rate tax payers I think

tramtracks · 26/11/2025 17:51

Im not fuming at this government. It is everything predicted and expected.

I am, however, fuming at the people who voted for them and are now complaining.

ledmeup · 26/11/2025 17:52

@Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim but they aren’t going to euthanise everyone on adult social care before they cost anything. The triple lock alone will be half that cost in the next few years. I agree we have huge problems but euthanasia over a nursing home won’t do much to help.

ledmeup · 26/11/2025 17:52

EasternStandard · 26/11/2025 17:48

The tax burden is a record high in a few years.

And it will keep going up, inevitable with an ageing population

CatusFlatus · 26/11/2025 17:53

Chewbecca · 26/11/2025 13:37

He doesn't get taxed at 60% by the way.
First 12k free of tax, then basic rate up to 50k, then 40% beyond that. Between 100-125 is also at 40% but because you gradually lose your PA in that space, the effective rate is higher.
But please don't think he pays £60,000 tax on his £100,000 salary, he doesn't.

This. OP your statement is misleading.

BananaPeels · 26/11/2025 17:53

I absolutely am raging about the lifting of the cap. When I think back to having to my baby in nursery at 5 months old to make ends meet and not being able to afford more than 2 I feel angry I have to pay for people to have the big family I wanted.

that said, if have been more than happy for that money to have been channelled into subsidised childcare so everyone benefits.

PeonyPatch · 26/11/2025 17:55

I am so angry at them lifting the 2 child benefit cap that I’m going to write to my local MP. I propose that others who aren’t happy do the same. It’ll prob do jack shit, but it’s better than moaning about it on Mumsnet
