What’s a very fast way to tell if someone is a good person or not ?

If you need to decide quite fast

OP posts:

I do both of these but sadly I am not a good person. I am not convinced it’s possible for anyone to be good. Jesus Himself said only God is good.

Posts like this make me glad that I'm an atheist!

Personally, I think most people are "good" overall, but everyone has flaws. And there are some people whose flaws somehow end up taking over.

I tell you one thing. Hitler, he only had one ball. The other was in…

There is actually evidence thats been found that Hitler did indeed only have one ball!
Goering had two, but very small
Himmler was very sim'lar
And Goebbels had no balls at all.

HTH

Do they put supermarket trolleys back in a bay, or just leave them where-ever?

mummymetalhead · 23/11/2025 01:34

I tend to get a vibe.
I once met a man and instantly despised him - I had no idea why but it was instant dislike. I’d had a couple of drinks and opened my mouth to say hi but instead said “I don’t like you.”
I was absolutely mortified. I never spoke to him again but a year later found out from mutual friends that he’d stolen money from his work, had been abusive to his partner, posted revenge porn of her online etc
My gut instinct was absolutely correct about him.

MadridMadridMadrid · 23/11/2025 12:27

OP, I may be wide of the mark in my speculation here, but if someone you've known for less than 18 months is putting pressure on you to lend them money, along with a convincing story about how they will be able to pay you back soon, please don't fall for it! Professional "romance scammers" will literally devote months to developing a "relationship" before making a request for money. They know that if they ask for money too soon they'll get nothing, so they invest months in the "relationship" before making a request in the hope that the rewards will be worth it.

It's weird, isn't it? I had an absolute aversion to someone the first time I met him. Then DC started going out with him. He proved to be a real sponger, selfish, unreliable and they split up, which broke DC's heart as he was so indifferent about it. But there was also something deeply creepy about him. I looked him up recently, and even on his workplace profile, that sentence at the end which is supposed to show who you are outside of work (you know: 'In my spare time I love rock climbing' sort of thing) was supposed to be a 'joke' but was about hurting animals.

sabababa · 23/11/2025 12:39

How they treat people in service positions especially if they dont know they're being watched.

CryMyEyesViolet · 23/11/2025 12:39

Make a racist/homophobic/sexist comment in front on them, or tell them about your involvement in illicit activities and see how they react.

The downside will be that they will think you’re a bad person… but at least you’ll have a read on them.

I have a little scanning device like that I got off Amazon for a fiver. I run it over a person’s aura, and if it beeps, they’re a bad person. Very quick and economical.

Isn’t that the thing that tells you whether they’re a ghost? 😁

ColaWars · 23/11/2025 12:42

There’s a difference between being a good/bad person and being someone you like or dislike. I know plenty of people who aren’t “bad”, I just don’t like them. Also know people who are probably pretty awful but I get along fine with them.

madaboutpurple · 23/11/2025 12:45

I am wondering why this has to be a quick decision I always think it can take time to suss people out. How they behave with other people should be a good indication. Maybe take time and suss them out. I am good at gut instincts as well as a few on here but sometimes I can still be pleasantly surprised.

Birdie100 · 23/11/2025 12:47

I always tist my gut instinct. You process so much info about a person from the first few seconds. It’s never let me down.

You tell us, OP, or do you just want to see what we make of your meaningless question?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/11/2025 12:51

Say no to them. Their reaction will tell you a lot.

PaulineMush · 23/11/2025 12:56

Shit in their hallway. Their reaction will tell you everything that you need to know.

Could be AI trying to hoover up replies to make it sound more psychologically astute...

GoodBrew · 23/11/2025 12:58

Ask them what they would do with the money if they won the lottery.

Nice people will treat their families, pay off mortgages, pay for healthcare, and also extend their kindness beyond their immediate circle to the wider community.

Dickheads would spend it all on themselves and will only ever talk about satisfying their own needs.

Follow your gut. If meeting someone your gut is saying no then follow it. That’s how I know. One was a very chatty intrusive questioning women who had never met me. She seemed to throw herself at me immediately as I entered the room. My gut said stay clear. I quickly found out something was very wrong with her. Another was his body language and trying too hard. He slipped up saying something that I knew was a lie (he didn’t know I had knowledge about what he was talking about). If I meet someone I don’t get a gut feeling then they usually end up a decent person. They have their quirks but nothing that would suggest they are a hazard.

I agree. Plus people who don’t meet your eye. I find that shifty

I don't know about this. Sometimes it is true and sometimes it isn't. I have seen a lot of people take instant dislike to me. I'm actually very kind and loyal. I've lost count of the times people have come up to me and said, "I thought you'd be no fun/thought you were a snob/a cow etc but you are lovely." I got so used to it, I stopped taking offence and started thinking, 'Oh they will work it out eventually.' But I have no idea why I give such a bad first impression to some people.

brightnails · 23/11/2025 13:01

how they treat low paid workers ie coffee shop and how they treat animals
also if they smoke and vape they don’t care about their own health so why would they care about yours?
they can’t be a good person but see animals as sport, it’s one or the other
makes it very easy to keep my friend commitments low “bubbles at the races with this one” ? goodbye 👋🏽

FirstdatesFred · 23/11/2025 13:02

No substitute for time knowing someone. But I think some clues are:

  • their relationship with their family
  • what their friends are like. The company they keep.
  • how they talk about others
  • how they treat people like waiters/other staff

Justchilling07 · 22/11/2025 22:23

No it’s not silly, let’s put it another way then, would you, help an injured animal, that could be just making a phone call, or just ignore and not be bothered.
If someone can’t stand animals(of course they don’t have to look after a domesticated animal, or pet them, but it’s not about that, this is about compassion, how can you could consider yourself a perfectly nice person, but you’d see an animal suffer, that was the actual point the previous poster was making.
Either you’re a caring person, or you’re not, how can you just switch it on an off to what suits you.

Agreed. DH is not an animal lover, but he carefully crushes tin cans before putting them in the recycling to make sure that animals can't get their heads stuck in them / relocates insects to outside the house rather than squashing them / caught and held on to the neighbours large barky dog (despite being scared of dogs himself) when it got spooked and ran back from the park on its own - fairly basic stuff that he didn't have to do, but did it because he is a decent human being.

They are a considerate careful driver and speak nicely to service staff.

Not 100% guarantee of a good person but it weeds a lot of unpleasant people out.

unfortunately, my ex h was wonderful to staff of Amy kind, and he was an excellent and considerate driver.

Oh what that covered up, I eventually discovered.

what I would consider doing is checking out any registers that might have him/her named on.

Good luck, especially if you’re the kind to “give anyone the benefit of the doubt”
