If you need to decide quite fast

OP posts:

For me anyway, it is how they talk about other people.
I don't really think there is a way to tell within a few minutes or something like that.

This is really true

VoltaireMittyDream · 22/11/2025 21:57

I have a little scanning device like that I got off Amazon for a fiver. I run it over a person’s aura, and if it beeps, they’re a bad person. Very quick and economical.

Pollqueen · 22/11/2025 21:57

Sleepeazie · 22/11/2025 21:19

I think as an initial way of getting a sense is;

  • do they help people (when they think no one’s looking. E.g elderly/ homeless)
  • do animals like them/ are the y enamoured with animals
  • are they rude to people who can’t do anything for them (or who can’t object)

Hitler loved his German shepherds and doted on them. So that blows that theory

GettingFestiveNow · 22/11/2025 22:00

By and large I don't agree with testing people, but if needs must then disagree with them / refuse to do what they want and see how they react.

Not really a theory, just personal benchmarks in the absence of longitudinal data (of a persons’ character).

It’s noted that 3 people have poo-pooed this. So the OP is free to disregard this (as they are my 2 other points).

Jugendstiel · 22/11/2025 22:05

Classic ways are -

Check how they generally treat waiters and shop staff. (Though everyone has a bad day sometimes)
Watch how they treat animals, especially non-cute ones like spiders and snails or pigeons.
Listen to how they talk about their ex, their boss and co-workers, their mother and siblings.
Say no to them. See how they react. Do they push back, take offence, get bitchy or sulk?

Zanatdy · 22/11/2025 22:09

Do they have life long friends? Do they have family around them? Says a lot about a person in my opinion.

The animals thing is silly. Perfectly nice people aren’t keen on domestic animals. My closest friend is a wonderful human being and has been the best possible friend to me for a quarter of a century, and is terrified of dogs. DH is fabulous and hates cats. I’m fine with cats and dogs, grew up with both, walked a friend’s dog daily for a year, but am not keen on pet ownership.

OP, there’s no easy or instant way. Just observe and listen.

No it’s not silly, let’s put it another way then, would you, help an injured animal, that could be just making a phone call, or just ignore and not be bothered.
If someone can’t stand animals(of course they don’t have to look after a domesticated animal, or pet them, but it’s not about that, this is about compassion, how can you could consider yourself a perfectly nice person, but you’d see an animal suffer, that was the actual point the previous poster was making.
Either you’re a caring person, or you’re not, how can you just switch it on an off to what suits you.

Shakeapeg · 22/11/2025 22:25

Just above and behind the right knee, pinch quickly and hard

CalmShaker · 22/11/2025 22:27

Chuck some coins (cash if you're feeling flush) at them discreetly. Gauge their level by seeing what they do;

  • put it in pocket, bad person
  • ask others around them, ok person
  • give money to charity, good person
Sleepeazie · 22/11/2025 22:28

Thanks @Justchilling07 that is exactly what I meant.

not do you ‘own’ animals, but are you compassionate enough to make a phone call if you see an injured hedgehog/ seagull etc

Oh my goodness, why bring Hitler into this, it’s hardly a good comparison.
The point is, if someone, has no time for animals, that says a lot about them, as l’ve already said how can you just switch off compassion, to suit yourself.

That's a myth apparently.

Makesensecommonagain · 22/11/2025 22:35

A good test of character is when they go to the supermarket, go with them and watch to see if they put the trolley back or leave it abandoned in a random spot.

A good person will always put it back.

PonkyPonky · 22/11/2025 22:40

I can’t tell with women very well but with men I get a very strong gut feeling about wronguns. If a man give me the ‘willies’ then I know to steer clear. Incidentally it hasn’t been wrong so far

StarDolphins · 22/11/2025 22:41

I don’t think you can. I know 2 awful people and they were charming at first. Until time passed and then they were awful. The more awful they are, the more they mask.

Some of the leading Nazis were animal lovers. (Animal lover myself, though not a Nazi).

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/11/2025 23:05

LAte to the show but ime the "Waitress Test" never fails.

Generally, how they treat people they perceive to be their inferiors is accurate.

Or buying food/giving money to a homeless person. If they laugh/scoff or a plain appalled that you would do that, not a good person.

One of the nicest people I know is indifferent about animals.

They're bringing Hitler into it because a lot of people think dogs have some sort of magic intuition to recognise good people, which is nonsense, their intuition is purely for people who pose a direct threat to them or their pack. Likewise people tend to associate people who are kind to animals as being generally good people - hence bringing Hitler into it. He loved his dogs and by all accounts they loved him back.

It's literally just saying that kindness to animals or animals liking someone are not a benchmark for their overall goodness.

GameofPhones · 22/11/2025 23:08

These days people come out with their prejudices pretty quickly.

Wonderlandpeony · 22/11/2025 23:08

I have an old friend from childhood who is highly narcissistic but masks it well initially. What I can't understand is that she is very popular and has many friends, and people generally seem to think she's a lovely genuine person.

However in the time I have spent with her over the years I have seen the mask slip frequently and noticed that she lies compulsively, to the point where she can't remember what she's lied about and frequently slips up. She is extremely charming to people's faces, but will gossip openly about them to others. She has issues with money, and outwardly might appear generous sometimes, but can actually be quite dishonest. She has lots of friends, many that she doesn't really know very well, but when she's with them will act like they're best friends, but seems to prefer being in groups rather than one to one. Lastly, if she doesn't get her own way she will go into a quiet sulk.

I wonder if this is true. Some psychopaths 'love' dogs or horses, because they can control them. Dogs are ultra obedient and stay faithful even if you harm them. They never answer back. But psychopaths will be cruel to animals they don't like or don't find biddable.

I have no time for animals. I am genuinely scared because of their unpredictability.

So that makes me a bad person in your eyes, and you would be wrong.

I actually think that its good comparison!
