Why are so many tv dramas Australian now?

Have continental European dramas gone out of fashion? I always watch shows years after everyone else so I don’t know if shows like The Killing or The Bridge are still being made but it seems like all of the shows that my friends recommend that I watch are Australian. I won’t watch Australian shows so I won’t be joining in but I’m curious to know why there are so many suddenly?

And if continental European dramas are still popular?

I think it started after channel 5 ditched Neighbours. Then they started showing Australian/uk drama series. Maybe that was coincidence.

Don’t know, but can’t watch Aussie stuff - the accent grates on me, ever since that Greek Odyssey TV prog where an Aussie of Greek origin was so loud and braggy.

I also cannot bear the accents or Australian slang. It’s disappointing to find out that a show that friends suggest that I should watch and which sounds interesting, turns out to be yet another Australian drama,

I’m ok with them. But I guess I watch the Aussie lunch time soaps so im
used to it

NotMyProblemAnymore · 22/11/2025 19:58

The climate is favourable there, production costs are lower, there's government tax incentives to film there, they have the infrastructure for filming, it's just less costly than European cities to film in.
It's why many American films are filmed in Canada, and have been for many years. It's significantly cheaper than filming in the US.

chattyness · 22/11/2025 20:05

We don't watch neighbours or home and away but we love most Australian & shows and films, also New Zealand made films & TV are great , I love the accents and the storylines are better, the characters actually talk to each other instead of giving blank looks so you have to guess what they are thinking all the time.
I wish there was an Australian Netflix or similar that we could subscribe to and watch more because there's not enough for us and it's time consuming combing through all the channels looking for something new.

mondaytosunday · 22/11/2025 20:06

There’s been some great Australian shows for years - they have a certain surreal quality to them! I personally love the accent. But Scandi dramas still popular - but guess these things are cyclical, plus maybe Scandi dramas are now just part of the usual offering. I’ve also seen some great Greek shows (LOVED Maestro in Blue - will make you want to pack your bags and move to Greece immediately). And Korean - whoa my DD is well in to those, though I’ve only seen Squid Game.

Top of the Lake (NZ) and The Tourist, The Newsreader(Oz) were really good. I'll watch drama from anywhere if it's good.

I agree.

A Remarkable Place To Die is excellent as well. And, I love The Brokenwood Mysteries - both New Zealand dramas.

I don't understand why anyone is against watching any antipodean drama TBH.

Funnily enough I cannot bear many UK accents or slang. However it doesn't stop me watching a good TV show. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

I cannot bear Australian accents or slang and I find it difficult to care about the characters so I avoid watching Australian dramas and shows. I blame Bluey.

There are far more shows available than I would be able to watch in a dozen lifetimes so I do not feel that I am missing out too much by not watching Australian shows that would only aggravate me.

I'm not a fan of cockney accents, but it doesn't stop me from watching anything set in London (ex Londoner BTW).

So not only are you a snob but you are also ignorant. New Zealand is not a state of Australia.

As Australians make some excellent drama programmes, yes you are missing out with your ridiculous attitude.

So rude and ignorant. Watch want you want to, we all have our preferences…. but it’s fairly embarrassing for you that you are so narrow minded.

HoppingPavlova · 23/11/2025 01:51

I cannot bear Australian accents

I really wish there were badges people would wear for stuff like this. I’m Australian and worked for many years in England. I’m not a big talker when not necessary, but by god if I had a patient wearing such a badge I wouldn’t have shut up from beginning to end🤣. ETA - it would have meant I could have made sure to jam in all of the Aussie slang I could as well🤣🤣.

What a bizarre, parochial world view.

Sbmpp · 23/11/2025 02:08

I love Australian shows but with the exception of Acorn there are not many shown in the US. I’ve heard of Home and Away but have never been able to find it and believe me we have quite a few streaming sites. We also love everything on Britbox or anything else British out there even if it’s years later (Foyle’s War, George Gently, Vera etc). You all do dramas so very well.

Vodkamartini3olives · 23/11/2025 02:09

I don't think it's happened suddenly haven't Australian shows always been pretty popular. I remember growing up watching flying Doctors, Son's and Daughters, The Sullivan's of course Home and away, Neighbours., Round the Twist, Kath & Kim. I know these aren't serious dramas but Australian shows are not new.

Pryceosh1987 · 23/11/2025 02:28

I do not live is australia. But i wish them a gooday mate.

OscillateWildly71 · 23/11/2025 02:31

I’m obsessed with Australian tv! I’ve never watched Neighbours or Home and Away (although I might if it was possible to go back a few years) but I fell in love with Five Bedrooms, and it made me seek out more. Loved Fisk, The Newsreader, The Heart Guy, RFDS, Squinters, Frayed, Upper Middle Bogan, probably others. My current obsession is Blue Heelers, but I’ve almost finished - I’ve got plans to start again from
the beginning though - that’s how much I love it. Only 510 episodes, sadly. Luckily Prime have loads of old Aussie dramas

Also the current series of Big Brother Australia is on YouTube

Ive seen some good NZ dramas too.

BananaMilkshake77 · 23/11/2025 02:35

How rude? So we are not allowed in Australia to produce good tv that your friends like as it's annoying for you? Odd
