Why are so many tv dramas Australian now?

Have continental European dramas gone out of fashion? I always watch shows years after everyone else so I don’t know if shows like The Killing or The Bridge are still being made but it seems like all of the shows that my friends recommend that I watch are Australian. I won’t watch Australian shows so I won’t be joining in but I’m curious to know why there are so many suddenly?

It’s only fair- we grew up watching The Goodies, Fawlty Towers, Dr Who and Morcombe and Wise- Aussie telly was mostly British or American.
Australia has local content laws so we do churn out TV shows- exporting them generates income for our industry, just like your BBC does.

My favourite ever is Neighbours. I hope it gets a reprieve.

me too and also Rake & Offspring, Nothing Trivial, The Almighty Johnsons, The Blue Rose..
On a more serious tv true crime drama side, Underbelly is absolutely brilliant especially the first 4 seasons.

I'm glad someone mentioned Rake - it was a lockdown discovery for me! The first three series were brilliant. Went a bit off-kilter towards the end, but would thoroughly recommend if you like sharp dialogue comedy-drama.

Another lockdown discovery was Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. A "lady detective" in 1920's Melbourne with an excellent supporting cast, it's one of my "go-to's" for relaxing with a bit of crime solving and gentle comedy. Also has a great supporting cast.

Edit to add some information.

I have just started watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries on U&Drama and found it very enjoyable. It is rather OTT, but in a fun way.

I'm with @RaraRachael about Return to Paradise. I find the detective in that very irritating and too much of a caricature.

@RaraRachael The lead detective in Return to Paradise is a real grumpy bum in the first episode but she improves as the series goes on. Season 2 has just started screening here. Being grumpy and closed off is part of her character but she shows a more human side at times.

@NoMoreNoisePlease Is it the broad “ocker” Australian accent that really grates on you? It’s exaggerated in some shows and movies for the drama and Australianness so viewers will know it’s Australian. The accent is real but found more in rural areas outside of the major cities. Not common IMO in cities.

@slapdashsusie That’s a trip down memory lane! Child of the 1980s?

I'm Australian it's because the channel here made a deal with a channel in England they share the costs of making it and the cast is usually half Australian and half from the UK 😊
