Why are so many tv dramas Australian now?

Have continental European dramas gone out of fashion? I always watch shows years after everyone else so I don’t know if shows like The Killing or The Bridge are still being made but it seems like all of the shows that my friends recommend that I watch are Australian. I won’t watch Australian shows so I won’t be joining in but I’m curious to know why there are so many suddenly?

I love the accent and love the Australian soaps and dramas, there are some brilliant series to watch.

I think channel 5 may have a joint production deal as they often seem to have a multi-episode drama filmed in Australia with a token British actor/character. More often than not the British character is overly-British for the international audience. I don’t enjoy these ones and avoid now.

But to and your question OP, yes Nordic dramas are still around and still popular.

@OscillateWildly71 I loved five bedrooms. I wanted to live with all of them. Especially Ben.

Some Australian Drama tv series -
The Jury - 3 seasons of it - with Sam Neil is very good. I just watched it so it came to mind first. But there really is a lot of good tv series now.
Black Snow,
The Tourist,
Deadloch (funny),
Jack Irish - wonderful series,
High Country,
the first season of Scrublands
and the delightful Boy Swallows Universe - it was my favourite of the year - a dysfunctional family wins out (the child actor in it is extraordinary and it has a happy ending)

Oh, Bay of Fires is good - shot in a small Tasmanian town filled with a bunch of rejected criminal characters -a quirky place to say the least.

Some tv series use characters adopting the broader Aussie accent for effect, but it’s really not a thing, most of the Australian tv is made for Australian and international markets. I like it. But then, I don’t think there’s an accent in the world that bothers me.

I cannot bear Australian accents or slang and I find it difficult to care about the characters so I avoid watching Australian dramas and shows. I blame Bluey.

😂😂

I don't think it's happened suddenly haven't Australian shows always been pretty popular. I remember growing up watching flying Doctors, Son's and Daughters, The Sullivan's of course Home and away, Neighbours., Round the Twist, Kath & Kim. I know these aren't serious dramas but Australian shows are not new.

Yes, it’s crazy to think this is new. I loved Flying Doctors, and also remember enjoying watching Prisoner Cell Block H, The Henderson Kids, Police Rescue, and Shortland Street (from NZ).

FeralWoman · 23/11/2025 05:46

@NoMoreNoisePlease What did Bluey do to you? Why the hate?

I’m glad that the UK are enjoying our Australian shows. We’ve had British shows on our tv for years. I remember watching The Bill when I was a child. Sometimes I wish they’d include subtitles for Scottish shows that have particularly strong accents. Generally if you want a nice moody dark crime drama then it’s going to be a British show.

Last night DH and I watched Ab Fab. It’s rerunning on ABC22 or ABC23. Funny as fuck even 30 years later.

Outrageous Fortune is an excellent NZ show.

We get your shows, you get our shows. We’re all part of the Commonwealth after all. And yes the Australian government generously funds overseas companies filming here.

ToriTheStoryteller · 23/11/2025 06:07

To those who do love Aussie tv, Janet King was a great legal drama. Haven't managed to find Crownies (JK was a spin-off from that) on any channels yet though.

Loved Five Bedrooms so much. Heather was such a well-rounded breath of fresh air for a character of that age.

I really wish there were badges people would wear for stuff like this. I’m Australian and worked for many years in England. I’m not a big talker when not necessary, but by god if I had a patient wearing such a badge I wouldn’t have shut up from beginning to end🤣. ETA - it would have meant I could have made sure to jam in all of the Aussie slang I could as well🤣🤣.

I think there’s quite a lot of joint ventures between the UK and Australia. If you watch the credits there’s often production companies from both countries involved. Maybe that why we get each others shows

RaraRachael · 23/11/2025 07:35

I love Antipodean programmes. I watched a lot of Scandi and other European ones but it's much easier not to be reading subtitles plus the weather is always nice..

I've watched The Brokenwood Mysteries, The Newsreader and A Remarkable Place to Die - any other suggestions welcome.

RampantIvy · 23/11/2025 07:38

I also enjoyed Darby and Joan recently. I hope they make another series.

AmberSpyware · 23/11/2025 07:41

If you want EU dramas then look at the Walter presents collection on channel 4

or BBC 4

FeralWoman · 23/11/2025 09:07

@RaraRachael Return to Paradise is an easy watch. It’s part of the Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise shows. Filmed in Australia, Australian cast plus the original detective from Death in Paradise as the England supervisor of the main character.

It could just say “xenophobic”…

Xenophobic? Australia does not constitute the entire world. Other countries are available.

So not only are you a snob but you are also ignorant. New Zealand is not a state of Australia.

As Australians make some excellent drama programmes, yes you are missing out with your ridiculous attitude.

I am well aware that New Zealand is a separate country. I was speaking specifically of Australia even if that poster said Antipodean, my thread is specifically about Australian dramas. I hadn’t even mentioned New Zealand until now.

That seems terribly unprofessional. If you are a medical professional in some form then surely you should be focusing on treating your patient, even if you don’t care for them, rather than going out of your way to aggravate them.

Thank you. Squid Games never interested me but I’ve enjoyed a lot of Korean films so I should be able to find something that’s more to my tastes and I’ll look for some. I just find it difficult with so many streaming services to keep up with.

I’m also intrigued by the mention of Greek shows that another poster mentioned so I will try to find some of those too.

@NoMoreNoisePlease have you watched Spiral?

It is a French crime drama set in Paris and is utterly brilliant.

Colin from Accounts, Fisk, The Letdown…

@NoMoreNoisePlease you are missing out on some brilliant TV.

mugglewump · 23/11/2025 10:01

I think part of this is the platforms feed you stuff similar to what you have already watched. I loved the Tourist and I also love Fisk, but I am not seeing lots of Aussie stuff in my feed because we watch a wide range of programmes.
