Why are so many tv dramas Australian now?

Have continental European dramas gone out of fashion? I always watch shows years after everyone else so I don’t know if shows like The Killing or The Bridge are still being made but it seems like all of the shows that my friends recommend that I watch are Australian. I won’t watch Australian shows so I won’t be joining in but I’m curious to know why there are so many suddenly?

I think part of this is the platforms feed you stuff similar to what you have already watched. I loved the Tourist and I also love Fisk, but I am not seeing lots of Aussie stuff in my feed because we watch a wide range of programmes.

I never watch Australian shows though but then algorithms can be weird. I regularly get adverts for alcohol and gambling when I don’t drink and never have and have no interest in gambling while simultaneously getting adverts aimed at Muslims when I am an Atheist.

Is that still around? I haven’t checked that out for years as I’m just getting back into watching shows. I’ll definitely do that, thanks to you and AmberSpyglass.

I have seen so many excellent Aussie dramas , The Twelve and Five Bedrooms to name just two.
I presume a deal must have been done to buy them but whatever the reason I’m very happy.

@OscillateWildly71 I loved five bedrooms. I wanted to live with all of them. Especially Ben.

Oh my god me too!!

I was so heartbroken when it left iPlayer that I bought it on Amazon Prime. They cut out all the swearing on bbc, some sex scenes, and I felt at three end of series 4 on iPlayer that everything was over between them all, but on prime it’s clear that’s not the case - Liz and Harry talk about meeting at the pub, Ben touched Heathers arm and says see you there. It’s stupid but when I finished watching it on iPlayer it seemed abrupt and made me sad. But the actual ending was just them moving on. Apart but together

Yes I’ve watched this too many times
No I don’t care

FirstdatesFred · 23/11/2025 13:19

Why "wont't" you watch Australian stuff? I think there are some great programmes coming from there. Loved the tourist and Derek from accounts in particular.

Think you're missing out by being closed minded tbh.

FirstdatesFred · 23/11/2025 13:20

An yes five bedrooms! Loved that too

Aur0raAustralis · 23/11/2025 13:30

I'm also curious to know how Bluey (a children's comedy) put you off adult dramas??

You don't have to like Australian dramas or accents or anything but blaming Bluey seems a bit weird! Or was it oversaturation?

CalzoneOnLegs · 23/11/2025 13:42

I used to love Skippy, Boney and Prisoner Cell Block H

CalzoneOnLegs · 23/11/2025 13:46

A Place To Call Home is a lovely series too

Oversaturation because I used to babysit regularly for friends’ young children and all they seemed to want to watch was Bluey. Likewise I have a horror of play dough from working in childcare.

Fair enough!

@NoMoreNoisePlease What did Bluey do to you? Why the hate?

I’m glad that the UK are enjoying our Australian shows. We’ve had British shows on our tv for years. I remember watching The Bill when I was a child. Sometimes I wish they’d include subtitles for Scottish shows that have particularly strong accents. Generally if you want a nice moody dark crime drama then it’s going to be a British show.

Last night DH and I watched Ab Fab. It’s rerunning on ABC22 or ABC23. Funny as fuck even 30 years later.

Outrageous Fortune is an excellent NZ show.

We get your shows, you get our shows. We’re all part of the Commonwealth after all. And yes the Australian government generously funds overseas companies filming here.

We love Outrageous Fortune & the prequel series Westside, have you seen that one ?

notnorman · 23/11/2025 15:47

Are there any good comedies?

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 23/11/2025 15:50

There were loads on the 80s too, not a.new thing.

My grandmother and her next door neighbour met everyday in one or the other houses for sandwiches, wee buns, tea and The Sullivans. Both died mid 1990s.

RaraRachael · 23/11/2025 07:35

I love Antipodean programmes. I watched a lot of Scandi and other European ones but it's much easier not to be reading subtitles plus the weather is always nice..

I've watched The Brokenwood Mysteries, The Newsreader and A Remarkable Place to Die - any other suggestions welcome.

I feel as though I need subtitles to understand Australian slang. If shortening words was made illegal there, almost the entire population would be instantly rendered mute.

I LOVE an Australian drama. I've never been and I'm absolutely fascinated by the vastness of it, how people can just dissappear in the outback etc. I love the different culture, and best of all no subtitles needed!

I have. I was trying to remember the name of it but couldn’t, so thank you!

@notnorman Fisk is great. It stars Kitty Flanagan.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 23/11/2025 16:01

I remember coming home at lunch from school and watching the Sullivans.

Then watching prisoner cell block H as a teen/ into uni. Interspersed with home & away and neighbours. Now it’s mafs Australia.

I like the pace of Australian tv. Seems more gentle.

intrepidpanda · 23/11/2025 16:34

I get a lot of Spanish on my recommended. Maybe you've been watching Australian drama so get recommended Australian drama.

I haven’t though. I never watch Australian dramas as I don’t enjoy them. It’s probably the algorithms being weird though.

@FeralWoman I tried watching one of the best Paradise programmes where the main detective was a woman who stomped around with her hands in her pockets, scowling at everybody.

I couldn't stand her so gave up on the series.
