Kids " sick" days

RubySquid · 22/11/2025 08:05

I read on so many threads about sharing of parenting and who has to look after kids on " sick" days as though it's a regular thing.

But in reality how much time do kids actually have off sick to make it a big deal to worry about. For example DS had 2 days off nursery with conjunctivitis, a couple of weeks off school with chickenpox in ks1 and 2 days with a sickness bug at about 8. He's visited the GP 3 times in his life and hands now graduated from uni

Similar stories with DDs, id say apart from the pox less than a week off for other sickness during school time

Yet the way people go on about covering sick days it seems that it's scents happening every couple of weeks. So we're my kids unusual in not getting constantly ill

I think you’re doing a great job of annoying everyone here.

you’ve gone for poorly children and perhaps suggesting your better immune system and parenting?

you’ve then gone for husbands - yours is ever so brave.

and then Mumsnet mums who have kids over 40.

putting words such as lucky in quotation marks and then saying things like other kids are constantly off sick are why you are getting the posts you are

like I said at the start OP - it felt then like such a goady post.

Edited

The first post was a genuine question. The others as replies to attacks.!!!

Lol. Was deserved. If she was going to accuse me of having a useless bloke then deserves accusations of having a wussy one who prob sits on his bum at a desk

I’d take a “wussy bloke” who doesn’t leave me at home to look after 3 kids alone any day! You come across like an extremely bitter person, I wonder why?

Maybe you shouldn’t have been accusing people of “sub par” (in your eyes) genetics of breeding then. What’s good for the goose…

You're reminding me of the time DC broke their leg. It was a bad break, so were in plaster up to the top of their thigh.

Their dad (we're separated) refused to carry them upstairs to use the toilet in his home, so they couldn't visit there (I offered contact visits elsewhere, with disabled loos, he refused).

I was told by the hospital that DC was not allowed to attend school due to the risk of being bumped/knocked down. I had to change from full-time to working 2 days a week for apx 8 weeks while we waited for the bones to heal.

Was 'managed out' a few months after returning full-time.

My daughter was born prematurely and seems to get every cold going. There is meant to be around 300 colds- I’m sure she’s caught them all 😂.
But she seldom has a day off school. I have really make her stay off as she loves school.

No it really wasn’t - and let’s be honest your husband was following the orders of a man (because let’s face it it was) who spends the day sat at a desk.

that said I think it is quite clear why your children didn’t want to have too many days off!

elliejjtiny · 23/11/2025 15:16

My 14 and 11 year old have 100% attendance this year. My 12 year old has 88%. He has appointments at a hospital an hour away and he had a week off for an operation. It will be worse in a year when he has braces and we have to go up there every 8 weeks.

ColdWaterDipper · 23/11/2025 17:20

Well I suppose there’s some variation due to different children and different exposures / immune systems. I have two boys, the eldest is almost never vomity (the last time was when he was 5, and he’s now 14, other than one instance of exercise induced vomiting at a cross country race aged 11). However he is more likely to have a cold linger on and on and turn into a chest infection. The youngest gets the same tummy bug and will almost instantly be sick rather than just feel a bit off colour….but he rarely gets colds and if he does, he’s over them
fully a few days later. I don’t keep my children off for colds but their school has a 48hr policy for any sickness, diarrhoea or high temperatures. DS1 had had 2 days off already this time last year in the Christmas term, whereas this year he’s had 0 days off sick so far. DS2 had 1 day off in September when he probably could have gone in really but he had a high temperature on a Friday and the school policy is to keep them off for 48 hours. This time last year he had had a whole week off already with a seizure that happened on a school trip.

I think some parents keep their kids off at the drop of a hat, but most don’t, however sick days are a reality for the majority of children - my view is if they are really feeling grotty or have something contagious that’s worse than a cold, then it may be better for them to stay at home.

I’ve reported this thread now as you’re taking this too far.

it’s discriminatory to say that unwell children are “lazy buggers”.

please look at your replies and reflect on how you’ve come across.

I can't get over sending a 13 week old to nursery full time. Poor baby 😢

To be fair, OP's children are adults now and that was probably just normal maternity leave then.

Well maternity leave was 16 weeks. I worked until 39 weeks pregnant in a job that was on my feet for 8 hours a day. Dd was born 13 days late

. So do the maths.

I didnt!!! Whe I said my kids weren't lazy buggers. My brother on the other hand definitely WAS. If he could wangle a sick day from school he would do so

Show me the words where I said " unwell children are lazty buggers " and I will own it.

I mean, sounds like they needed to be on the brink of collapse before OP would let them stay home when poorly, so not surprising really...

Lol the point of the thread is that they WERENT poorly.

Not sure what it has to do with the maternity leave rules in the early 90s though
In fact there's probably quite a few poster whose own parents had the same deal. Not everyone had a sahm surely

You’re lucky! Last year I think we had 3… And on two of those either me or DH ended up with it. Hopefully was just a bad year 😆

My kid never had sick bugs, its genetic, Type B blood has a resistance to norovirus. I am definitely type B not sure what my dc are

Well, not everyone was sending their newborn to nursery at 13 weeks old!

You're very quick to judge everyone else for their parenting choices, but don't seem to like it when others judge yours.

There were plenty of babies at nursery in that age . I'm sure my parenting choices would've been criticised much more if I made myself and dd homeless by not paying mortgage

Strangely enough as my kids have all grown into independent, self sufficient adults so I can see the finished article of my parenting choices where some who are being havent even.made it to having school aged kids yet lol

Bollocks I know what I wrote. Next time people want to go reporting stuff perhaps they better screen shot it first so they can prove what they are saying. In fact I think I'm might screenshot any lightly contentious posts myself for that reason
