People lying on mumsnet

Slightly light hearted but ive read a few threads where some posters sound completely implausible, think showing off about money or gifts or how attractive they are/how many men want them. I often think, are they just fantasists sitting at home making up the lives they want. I guess im asking, do others think like this and often read stuff here and think 'what a load of rubbish?

You’re still reading so whether it’s a fantasist or bot Mumsnet is still getting paid! I skim read a lot and get bored of posts easily. I’m abroad a lot so I tend to read and interact at odd UK times and because I’ve not spoke English for a while.

It’s not real life. It’s an anonymous forum. I don’t take it too seriously.

I enjoy reading the posts I click on most of the time the replies for the majority, I can take or leave. All with a pinch of salt.

Edited

I wish I could do this : not take it too seriously I mean.
I try not to get over invested and upset by what I read . But if I'm feeling low to start off with some of the threads really get to me.
I end up having to periodically delete my account and take a break.

Agreed - You only have to read all the threads that the title starts with “To think..” on AIBU that are by the same poster, who changes name every time, but has a particular style and the posts are either goady or absolute inane rubbish. AIBU was absolutely spammed with them the other day.

Urgh I get sick of seeing these. I see at least one or two a day, and I'm not even on here much most days. I just roll my eyes at these threads and don't even engage.

I also roll my eyes at people who claim to earn a six figure sum per year, and then claim they are struggling financially. I just think 'yeah? Just try being on a household income of £27,000 a year mate!' But we're meant to feel sorry for them because little Jimothy's private school is going to cost an extra three grand a year next year, and they can only have 3 holidays abroad next year, instead of the usual 5. And they're struggling SO much that they may have to sell one of their holiday villas!

My tiny violin is worn out! 🎻

ANd yes, I get sick of the threads where posters are claiming they have stunning, gorgeous DC who model agency scouts are desperate to sign, and whose husband is on £200K a year, and has a long commute, and travels abroad frequently with his work. Oh and the husbands and DC are always 'TALL...

Then there's the 7 stone, size 4 posters, who think being 5 ft 4 and 12 stone is 'very obese.' 🙄

I also get irked by posters who come on here, and say they only have 17 pence to last the next 5 days, and come out with a load of things they need to pay for... Then when people give suggestions and ideas, the OP poo-poos every one, and comes up with a number of excuses as to why all these ideas won't work. It's almost like they want someone to give them some money. Wink

But hey, I'm sure SOME posters tell the truth of course. Not everyone can be lying. And I believe some threads are genuine, and the posters are too. But yeah, some posts on here are really OTT, and some things some posters say are hard to believe. (IMO.)

I don't think there are many bot/ai threads though. I think the more crazy ones are just people who are bored. 😆

I think they’re lying when they write that they have loads of money or something

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 20/11/2025 21:08

It was always the same an old time fantasist regular tried to pass of a Parasian five star hotel bedroom as her own 😂

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 20/11/2025 21:36

@WorriedDogMum87 Yes I agree. There seems to have been a few threads lately where posters are claiming to have inherited, or been 'gifted' a large sum of money, like £50K to £100K, or even more.

@Seagullsandsausagerolls And yes to you too. I see the 'show me your bedroom' or 'show me your kitchen' type threads, and they always look like pics 1 & 2 here, NEVER like pics 3 & 4. 😆 And really, who the fuck is going to post a photograph on here of their actual home? I would NEVER do that!

Well you re in no position to know really are you? Some people have very little imagination, and could not even conceive the lives of others. But there's nothing wrong with having a limited outlook, so don't feel bad about it 🤣
FYI, I'm gorgeous and wealthy, and lusted after😉
Truly!

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway I howled at 'Little Jimothy' - so true!

I think this place is:

1/3 normal people
1/3 lunatics
1/3 bots/trolls

I question the ones who work full time for their 100k roles, have the perfect rural home life, 2 kids and the dog. Fantastic social lives…

but have all the free time in the world to post on here.

Tbh I think 90% of the time mumsnet is appalling for advice and I don’t think it’s out of line to say that it has a reputation for being so too. There isn’t a culture of challenging or policing advice to ensure it has any quality so you end up reading what some random (usuallly wound up and emotional) person thinks

There is a lot of batshittery on here, but there’s usually a few posters with wise words.

I Have found it useful - but in recent years I’ve noticed a real shift in the type of poster ( a lot angrier ) which makes it less helpful
