Bows on front doors.

As an ex postie, this with bells on. Both because they're tacky as fuck and for practical reasons.

Why on earth would you put something on your door that makes it near impossible to put anything through your letterbox during a time of year where you get more post and parcels than usual? 😭

bumblingbovine49 · 16/11/2025 14:02

I have loathed most things about Christmas since I was in my 30s but if you really don't like carol and carol singing, I think you really have reached a state of peak bah humbug 😂

Carols and carol singing and carol concerts are almost the only thing left about the Christmas season that I actually do like

SchnizelVonKrumm · 16/11/2025 14:04

Blue Christmas lights. They're not festive at all and confuse my eyes so I can't focus on anything.

Those personalised signs people put up that nearly always have an apostrophe in the wrong place, eg "Christmas at the Smith's/Jone's"

Adults who bang on about how excited they get about Christmas in an OTT way from September onwards. It doesn't make you look whimsical and eccentric, it just gives "I'm mad, me!" vibes.

EchoedSilence · 16/11/2025 14:08

All the weeping and wailing at the shite mawkish JL ads.

Putting the decorations and lights up too early is not for me. I agree it makes it end too early as well. They are bored of them and they look tatty by the darkest days and that’s exactly when we need them. If I could choose I’d have the lights and cheer for the weeks either side of the 21st, the solstice, the shortest day. Bringing light! So from about mid dec to early Jan. By putting them all up early we seem to be increasingly robbed of the Christmas season following the 25th- which runs well into Jan traditionally.

Well you'd like our house traditions then. I refuse to put up rhe tree until after my birthday, which is mid December, so they usually go up the weekend nearest the solstice and come down on the weekend immediately following Jan 6th as I just can't have them up much after that . It feels wrong for some reason

Titasaducksarse · 16/11/2025 14:11

Anyone feeling they're 'less than' if there kids aren't getting the latest in thing. Anyone who gets into debt for a single day. I hate Christmas shopping as I see people laden down with bags and I wonder how many of those people will be hard up for months just to get this one day 'perfect'.

Giggorata · 16/11/2025 14:15

There are so many Christmas things that I wouldn't personally have in my house but I don't really care what others may do, except that I wish people would stick to the Twelfth Night tradition with taking down the tree and decorations.

And I wish that I liked the song “Stop the Cavalry” because the lyrics are good and say it all - but I hate the dreary repetitive tune so much..

menopausalfart · 16/11/2025 14:17

Can't we just throw the whole season in the bin?

worrisomeasset · 16/11/2025 14:20

The same songs we’ve heard a million times before being played on a loop in every shop. Slade, Mariah, Pogues etc, I never want to hear their Christmas songs ever again.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/11/2025 14:23

People who write XMas . How much more effort is it to write "Christmas"

People who do the "Is this A THING ?" ( usually on the Christmas Threads . If you don;t like it , stay off them.

People who write " I am struggling to understand Dec 1st Boxes or Christmas Eve Boxes . Never had them when I was a child . What are they "?
No, you're not "struggling to understand" you're just being goady .If only there was such a thing as Google where you could type in "What is a Dec 1st Box" and find out Xmas Hmm

Step Into Christmas by Elton John
Elton John basically .

..................................
I like :
Dec 1st Boxes (adult DC so no stocking or Christmas Eve Hampers )
Other peoples lights and trees as my cats have put the brakes on these
Christmas bedding/pyjamas/jumpers (get re-used each year ) and The Snowman Toilet Paper which doesn't .

Black electrical tape on window to create small panes and spray snow in the corners.
It doesn't look ye,olde .
It looks shit.

😂😂😂

mondaytosunday · 16/11/2025 14:25

The Elf! Thank goodness we never did it. I’m fine if it’s your thing but so many people complain about ‘having to do it every year’ because they made it a tradition. Matching outfits… I think see to think those ‘what we did this year’ letters were cringe but actually quite like them!

mondaytosunday · 16/11/2025 14:26

Gifts. It always feels like capitalism on crack. Like Whoville from The Grinch. Awful.

People going into debt to buy tat.

Christmas trees and decorations put up in November

The threads that will invariably start soon "Can we stop with the awful American use of Santa - it's Father Christmas "
Maybe in England it is FC but has been Santa in Scotland since time began.

ADHDwifeHP · 16/11/2025 14:32

This is the first time I’ve come across 1st of December boxes! I had barely got over the Christmas Eve boxes which I don’t like 😂 just too cynically obviously something created by someone spotting a clever way to wring more money out of people at an already manically consumeristic time and I really do generally love Christmas 🎄 😂 we do a carrot and some homemade cookies on a plate for Santa and a glass of milk. Kids love it!

Homes with trees up in November and down on Boxing Day. Tacky af

Why is this tacky? I don’t do it but not sure what about it is tacky?

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 16/11/2025 14:34

Seeing people's social media photos with piles and piles of presents stretching across the entire room for a two year old. It's always the people who can least afford to be overspending on pointless shit that will be in landfill by October.

Those gift sets that consist of cheap tat, boxed up and flogged as a Christmas treat. Half bottles of cheap wine with a wine glass with some tacky slogan printed on it like 'wine o' clock'. Bog standard toiletries that are not in any way a luxury, stuck in a Christmas gift box. A Cadbury's mug with a sachet of Cadbury's instant hot chocolate powder in it, wrapped in cellophane. A miniature bottle of very ordinary whisky with a golf ball and a golf tee. You get the picture.

All usually found in the 3 for 2 deal every December in Boots. Just no.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/11/2025 14:45

Not much about Christmas makes me cringe, because I'm a huge fan of Christmas, but the one thing that does make my toes curl is when OHs complain about it. They don't like the work involved or the food or the kids enjoying it or having the house turned upside down or people coming to visit or having to look happy.

Always strikes me as a bit rich when (in the cases of all the ones I know) they do absolutely nothing towards Christmas, express no opinions as to what they'd like to have happen instead of what their DP organises, have no idea what the kids are even getting and get to sit and eat and drink themselves stupid over the whole season

Happyholidays78 · 16/11/2025 14:47

I've come to the conclusion that my Christmas cringe is anything modern/new e.g matching pjs, Christmas eve boxes, elf on the shelf (I've never heard of 1st December boxes until this thread). I guess I like the traditional stuff e.g carols, a stocking, mince pies. The simple stuff really, my partner loves Christmas & we have lot's of decorations but I struggle with Christmas as I know it is actually quite hard for a lot of people, there is definitely a pressure to make everything perfect & social media does not help.

Yes to that!!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 16/11/2025 15:13

There has been so much scope creep of Christmas over the last few years. Things I’m just not familiar with…. Family PJs, Xmas bedding, Xmas Eve boxes, lots of wasteful things. But… I accept people are all different and we all have different traditions.

Door bows though. There is always a line, and the world lost me entirely at door bows!
