Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Cook my swede this evening… Perfection!

That sounds like a euphemism!

washing up liquid is great for cleaning tarnished silver in a pinch

Toothpaste also works.

@changednameagain1234 not sure if anyone replied to your question about cleaning oven racks, but this is what I do. Get a cheap under bed storage box, fill with hot water and a generous amount of soda crystals, put the racks in and leave to soak until the water goes cold. The grease will just wipe off. You might need a toothbrush or similar to get in the little nooks if they are bad.

Brilliant!

Pozz · 18/11/2025 00:28

Is this hot water?

No, cold. It gets under the wax and you can just slide it out.

DoreenGrey · 18/11/2025 10:04

Alcohol wipes etc will get rid of biro marks eg on clothing. I’ve now bought a spray for such purposes. Search for isopropyl or rubbing alcohol.

Recycledblonde · 18/11/2025 10:27

When you put eye cream/serum/moisturiser on your face rub any excess on the back of your hands. It’s worked miracles on my old lady hands.

Expired credit card I meant, for windshields

And for scraping caked-on food off of pans when washing up. Saves your fingernails.
Lakeland sells a similar plastic tool, but it's rounded at the corners.

My hiccup remedy never fails and it’s so simple. You ask everyone to wait for the next hiccup. It never comes. It feels a bit silly with everyone staring at you in silence but the trick is it gets the sufferer breathing very gently and that allows their diaphragm which is in spasm to fall back in sync.

No way! I have to try this.

I went through a phase of getting hiccups EVERY DAY for a good couple of years and I still get them a couple of times a week so I have tried every method I can think of. My favourite is to stop, and tense my diaphragm up as much as humanly possible for as long as I can manage without needing to breathe. Most of the time that seems to do it for me but you do look a bit odd. Means mainly I can get rid of them now after maybe 3-5 hiccups.

the only way I can get rid of hiccups is a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar, the only reason I use balsamic as its sweeter so taste wise is easier to swallow - 100% results in stopping hiccups

You can clean your buttery knife off by inserting it into the side of your slice of hot toast. When you take the knife back out it is clean.

How did I not think of this before?? Genius!

5 mins ago on Mumsnet I read that you can microwave a whole swede for about 25 mins, then just scoop out the soft flesh.

🤯

I can't find the post. Dud it expire at 30 days?

I have a giant swede to try it on.

I used a Brillo pad (I'm a big Brillo pad fan!) to get all the watermarks off my old stainless steel kettle. It worked like a dream when nothing else had made a difference and it doesn't seem up have damaged the shiny surface at all.

Brillo pad ruined my stainless steel sink, it's all tarnished and patchy now.
I buy ready peeled vacuum packed garlic cloves from Asian shops or greengrocers. £4.99 for a huge pack that I freeze and use as necessary. Those stainless steel rocking crushers are excellent for crushing garlic but if you ever get garlicy hands, put a bit of fairy on a stainless steel spoon and wash your hands with it and rinse.
If your honey goes crunchy, microwave for a few seconds at a time on a low setting until it goes smooth. Don't do what I did, blitzed on high for too long and napalmed the microwave.
To quickly defrost a fridge or freezer I use a hand held steam cleaner but don't concentrate it for too long in one area, wave it around like a spray tan. Put a bowl down or old towel to catch the melt.
A tip from here was use cheap shaving foam to clean the shower screen or weirdly, fabric softener, was amazed that it works!

I thought you were saying you cleaned your sink with the garlic at first. It's been a long day. 😄

I will try this.

If you do not have a glacé cherry then just paint a grape with red nail varnish.

Make Parmesan last longer by mixing it with dandruff.

Superb idea for the glace cherry……!

PigletJohn · 18/11/2025 19:21

@cherryripe

"stainless steel sink, it's all tarnished and patchy now"

Did you by any chance use a limescale removing acid cleaner on it?

Curlygirl06 · 18/11/2025 20:54

If you have lillies, cut the stamens off so you don't get lily pollen everywhere. If you do get lily pollen on clothes etc, DO NOT RUB IT. Get some sellotape, wrap it round your hand sticky side out and dab at the pollen for a start. Then put it outside in the sunlight, like tomato and blood stains, sunlight gets lily stains out.

This tip is fabulous. We've all left a tissue up a sleeve, usually in a dark wash and on something woolly, like a cardigan. I have done this, and thought I'd never get the bits off. I'd read somewhere that if you put it straight back in the washing machine with no powder etc, just 2 x 300mg aspirin tablets and on a quick wash, boom ! all comes off. I wish I'd done a before and after photo, it was that good!

If you hate changing duvet covers, especially on king size beds, get rid of the duvet. Wear decent pjs, put on 2 empty duvet covers and a washable blanket. Throw in the wash as needed

Pozz · 18/11/2025 22:41

Viz tips:

DON'T waste money on expensive iPods. Simply think of your favourite tune and hum it. If you want to "switch tracks", simply think of another song you like and hum that instead.

PREVENT burglars stealing everything in the house by moving everything into your bedroom when you go to bed. In the morning, move it all back again.

HevenlyMeS · 18/11/2025 22:44

Seems a phenomenal & brilliant idea
I'm useless at accurately fitting the duvet inside the duvet covers-
Forevermore seems to be uneven etc
However I'm presuming me&mine, would need more than just one blanket & 2empty duvet covers - Most likely need a couple of warm blankets & I'm grateful for your awesome recommendation💚🤗💚

YouLando · 18/11/2025 22:44

My favourite Viz tip:

Don't waste money on expensive binoculars - simply stand closer to the object you wish to view

Why not just put on an empty duvet cover with the duvet on top? Then you'd have exactly the same warmth as your normal duvet. You could put another cover on top of the duvet too if you wanted it to look nice.
