Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

In my younger, naughtier days, I discovered an excellent hack for solving the issue of your cocaine going sticky.

It happened to us one night at a house party. My friend whipped out a pan and boiled some water. She emptied the coke onto a plate, took the water off the boil and popped the plate on top of the pan for about 15 seconds.

Problem solved! (Allegedly)

Ok I might be behind the times here, but I’ve just discovered frozen mash. Five minutes in microwave and quick mix for perfect mash. I have arthritic hands so am finding peeling veg difficult. Good for quickly topping shepherds pie, fish pie or just quick bangers and mash.

  • wrap a towel around baby then warm water on the towel to wash newborn (no screaming)
  • conditioner as shaving gel
  • roll an orange before peeling

We wrap a muslin round the baby before putting her in the bath - tip from my midwife the first time round. Apparently it's helps them feel secure.

How to get old yellow sweat stains out of t-shirt armpits?

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 16/11/2025 04:31

Citric acid gets rid of rust stains.

Menthol crystals in boiling water make an inhalation that will clear your head of anything (but whatever you do, don't use more than a single tiny crystal or you'll regret it).

Garlic just slips out of its skin after a couple of seconds in the microwave.

GucciBear · 16/11/2025 04:35

VaguelyClassical. I agree. To me, a back is when I ride out. (Equine).

Sweetpea1532 · 16/11/2025 05:18

If you have too many lemons or limes to use up before they go bad, just pop them whole into the freezer. They keep perfectly in their own peels.
When ready to use take them out of the freezer and microwave them until soft enough to cut.

My weird tips : If you are parent of a child with long hair, any time you see a stray bobble around the house pop it around your wrist. Has saved me cursing for a bobble of a morning before now.

Put a couple of wet wipes in your pocket every so often and let them go dry , if you forget to take baby wipes out with you just wet the wipes in your pocket to wipe kids faces … if this does not apply you have a hanky anyway 🤣

Don’t laugh , it’s useful! 🤣

@mrlistersgelfbride your tip on hair bobbles reminded me of this Instagram I saw recently. 😂
Poor little girl...I can remember this exact thing when I was child...if only my mum had known your tip, also

Yet another jar lid hack - use a can opener to lift the lid until the seal is broken. Then the lid will be easy to open. I've been doing it for years and it's never failed me yet. Don't wrench the lid off with the can opener, it's just to break the seal.

Do you mean a bottle opener?

5 mins ago on Mumsnet I read that you can microwave a whole swede for about 25 mins, then just scoop out the soft flesh.

🤯

It's good to do this too soften it for peeling and chopping for stews etc. Make sure you prick it before . I do it for butter nut squash too.

muddyford · 16/11/2025 05:52

BoxesBoxesEverywhere · 16/11/2025 03:46

Yes!
Bloody hack 🙄
It's a tip 😁

I loathe 'hack'. It's 'tip'. 'Hack' is something you do with a heavy blade or axe, or a nice casual bit of riding a horse.

Batoutofhellish · 16/11/2025 05:58

Vaguelyclassical · 15/11/2025 21:25

Does anybody else dislike the word "hack" and yearn, nostalgically, for the word "tip"?

Me. Another word I hate is ‘hero’. Language is being bastardised.

Maggiebell · 16/11/2025 06:34

Any stains on cloths just rub in washing up liquid into the stain then wash in machine as normal. Works everytime especially on grease or bolognaise stains.

WrigglyDonCat · 16/11/2025 06:36

takealettermsjones · 15/11/2025 22:33

This is not a "hack" as such and is probably common knowledge but I only learnt it a year or so ago - to get blood out of clothing, soak it in cold salt water, wring out, soak again in a fresh batch, wring out, then put in washing machine. It has worked for me on everything - whites, delicates, anything.

I think we may have found the serial killer. This is someone who seems to have spent a lot of time getting blood out of clothing.

I imagine if anyone needs advice on how to dispose of bones, teeth and hair so as not to leave any forensic evidence this is the person to ask.

I'll keep Takealetter talking, somebody else run and get the Police...

Maggiebell · 16/11/2025 06:41

I thought pigs would get rid of bones etc..

#Takealettermsjones, could be married to a boxer which could explain the blood,or does John Wicks washing.

MrMucker · 16/11/2025 06:41

Freshly painted nails-if you're in a hurry for them to dry, splay fingers and reach your hands as far back into a freezer drawer as possible. Obviously only if room to do so without touching anything.
Hold for half a minute if you can stand the door being open that long.
Fast set for varnish. Cheaper than Seche Vite 😁

How to get old yellow sweat stains out of t-shirt armpits?

Drizzle it generously with lemon juice and leave in full sun for few hours

IWishToBeAnonymous · 16/11/2025 06:49

Jarkey about 30 years ago I bought one of these to open jars it just releases the pressure, and doesn't damage the lid like using a tin opener, it's brilliant. Excellent stocking fillers!

Me neither

Glad it’s not just me. I don’t get the spoon one either.

Today I discovered that a spray for cleaning swimming pool scumlines is great for removing baked-on pigeon shit from your windscreen. Have to rinse well afterwards though as the spray contains caustic soda.

You're welcome 😅

Now that’s the kind of tip I’m here for!

Negroany · 16/11/2025 07:05

Pinkandpurple225533 · 15/11/2025 23:21

It also works brilliantly on random stains on upholstery and carpets (test somewhere inconspicuous first) but it’s gotten weird marks out of our playroom carpet that couldn’t be shifted with carpet shampoo

Yep, and sticky things.

Ciribiner · 16/11/2025 07:06

Any tips for turning a white bra white again after somehow turning it grey having washed it with something I shouldn't have?

Charlize43 · 16/11/2025 07:06

During foreplay, waving a holly branch over your vagina can stop penetration and pregnancy. I found this in a book on Medieval Pagan Contraception.

Maggiebell · 16/11/2025 07:09

To make a white sauce instead of making a roux with butter and flour just put the butter and flour and milk in at the same time turn the heat on and keep stirring (or whisking) makes perfect white sauce every time. ( Mrs Beaton's tip).

grannycake · 16/11/2025 07:19

The wooden spoon trick to prevent pans boiling over works for me every time
