Favourite expression to describe a lot of rain?

Thread inspired by the fact that it's been raining where I am all bloody day...

I wondered, do you have a favourite expression to describe when the weather's like this? What's your go to phrase? Are you a classic 'it's chucking/dumping/peeing it down' sort of person, or do you prefer to add 'absolutely' in there for extra emphasis? Or the still much-loved but rarer 'cats and dogs'?

My favourite at the moment is 'it's banging it down', on the basis that up until fairly recently, I'd never heard that variation. Or perhaps there's a local version or similar expression that's only said in your part of the country?

Please, tell me. I'm bored and genuinely curious. 😁

It's pissing down. 🌧

That's my phrase of choice. Grin

Midlands.

Arlanymor · 14/11/2025 21:18

Raining upwards - in that it's so heavy it bounces off the ground and rains on you twice!

In Welsh we call it raining old ladies and sticks!

Sorry missed off my location - south west Wales.

ShodAndShadySenators · 14/11/2025 21:18

Hosing it down

When it's exceptionally heavy in Scotland they say "stair-rods". In Greece it's "chairlegs". I love local variations on sayings...

Droox · 14/11/2025 21:19

Hammering or bucketing

Interesting how many words we have already.

louderthan · 14/11/2025 21:25

Raining fish hooks and hammer handles

JudgeBread · 14/11/2025 21:26

My mam always says "the heavens have opened" which I quite like.

My gran says "it's raining the devil and pitchforks"

Both very biblical. My husband calls it "a frog strangler" when it's coming down heavy. No idea what it means but I'm fond of it.

Callalilly2016 · 14/11/2025 21:26

Il pleut comme vache qui pisse - it’s raining like cows pissing. It makes me smile

HangryBrickShark · 14/11/2025 21:27

Throwing it down/chucking it down, coming down in stair rods.

Ineffable23 · 14/11/2025 21:31

I probably mainly use chucking it down. Or "it's raining so much I might as well have had a bath", or it's "sheeting" with rain.

Cinnamonleaf · 14/11/2025 21:35

It's absolutely pouring
