Favourite expression to describe a lot of rain?

Thread inspired by the fact that it's been raining where I am all bloody day...

I wondered, do you have a favourite expression to describe when the weather's like this? What's your go to phrase? Are you a classic 'it's chucking/dumping/peeing it down' sort of person, or do you prefer to add 'absolutely' in there for extra emphasis? Or the still much-loved but rarer 'cats and dogs'?

My favourite at the moment is 'it's banging it down', on the basis that up until fairly recently, I'd never heard that variation. Or perhaps there's a local version or similar expression that's only said in your part of the country?

Please, tell me. I'm bored and genuinely curious. 😁

Does it have what we call Irish rain in it? You know where it's raining so light you can't see the rain, it's more like a mist, but it soaks you all the same?

That's mizzle, that rain.

And Rain Type No. 17 is a dirty blatter against the windscreen that even the wipers can't keep up with...

Siling down.

This! I saw it on another thread today and thought I hadn’t heard that expression for ages.

Porthmadog Weather.

A family expression from when we were on holiday. My parents didn't pay for stuff to do, so we went to the beach come rain, shine, fog, etc. We even had a windshield with a roof for bad weather.
"Porthmadog Weather" was when the rain was so hard that even they gave up on the idea of a beach day and went to the nearest town.

Haven’t heard teeming with rain for a long time. Remember it being popular when I was younger.

I always think 'Il pleut' despite not speaking French for 30 years 😅

I lived in Scotland many years ago and 'dreich' is one of the best words I ever learnt there 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Shafting it down!

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 16/11/2025 00:49

We have on occasion been to southern Europe where we experienced seriously torrential rain, so for years we referred to heavy rain in the UK as ‘Montenegro rain’; this has now been replaced with ‘Estepona rain’ after an unsuccessful winter holiday a couple of years back.

Otherwise I would be with others saying ‘absolutely pissing it down’.

A bit soggy out there, said by a colleague drenched and standing in a puddle.

My mum says that a lot. She’s from Cork city originally.

It’s pelting rather than belting where I am 😊
