A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

We are bracing for the budget 😬

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It would crash the housing market in Scotland too!

Labour are already crashing the housing market. Prices in my old neighborhood down 7% this year - currently officially at 2013 prices.

Damnthetorpedoes · 16/11/2025 15:06

WTAF?

Angela Rayner is yet to pay her £40,000 stamp duty bill, despite laying the groundwork for a leadership challenge against Sir Keir Starmer.

The former deputy prime minister and housing secretary quit in September after The Telegraph revealed she had failed to pay the second home surcharge on a seaside flat she had bought in Hove.

Sources at the weekend suggest Ms Rayner was “on manoeuvres” to replace Sir Keir amid fevered speculation about the future of his premiership, and had even offered MPs roles in a future cabinet.

However, The Telegraph has learnt that the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne is still to pay a single penny to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Sources close to Ms Rayner said the tax authority had yet to send her a final bill.

Ms Rayner retained an interest in her house in Greater Manchester when she bought the £800,000 seaside flat in East Sussex earlier this year, but claimed that the new property was her only home.

MantleStatue · 16/11/2025 15:09

I am not sure how council tax is determined.

When we lived in a house in Wimbledon (semi detached) worth circa £1 million our council tax was less than what our current house (mid-terrace worth less than half that) in a deprived area of the South is currently.

She probably needs the salary of a cabinet position, or maybe if she becomes Prime Minister we could have act of Parliament called the 'Raynor Act' 2026. This act gives anybody who does a Dick Whittington. This meaning that ascent to Prime Minister, without any qualifications, or a person deemed to be 'authentic Working Class' will similarly be exempted from CGT Stamp Duty, or Income Tax

I watched Shabana Mahmood on the interview programmes this morning. I can’t see why the Labour backbenchers and others supposedly rate her highly. She seems very uninspiring and ministerially routine to me.

The pool of Starmer replacements is not exactly impressive.

CruCru · 16/11/2025 15:41

Angela Rayner may be liked by the Labour backbenchers but I can't see her being good at negotiating with foreign leaders.

Yes I’m not sure why she’s getting all the positive spin tbh

@EmpressoftheMundane - the problem with Labour on the left side is that the middle class and upper middle etc can shield temporarily from most of the pain - because temporary it will be, as it always is. People can move abroad, cut back on work etc - ultimately, who always ends up getting hurt is the poorest. They cannot actually ever tax wealthy people more than they want to pay unless they close borders, which they cannot, as international financial markets will decimate them. I think most wealthy people know this - it is a pain and they can lose money, but they won’t get so hurt that it destroys them. Destruction of wealth in the country does hurt the very poor and ill, and very much long term.

I never understand these wild socialists, it is obviously just a power trip they get on.

Frankly, I am not sure where her strengths lie.

Beyond being a union sop and a woman ‘of the people’, she’s an enigma to me.

I think you are right.

When Reeves inevitably finds another black hole, of her own making, she will come again - and people will increasingly find themselves as defined as having ‘broad shoulders’, when they patently do not.

People believe that they are immune from these raids, until they’re not…

She’s a female Prescott. Installed as a makeweight for the left of the party. No discernible talent at anything.

Araminta1003 · 16/11/2025 16:02

At this point, I do not think Reeves will survive much beyond the budget anyway, but we shall see!

Sarahconnor1 · 16/11/2025 16:08

This is my worry, if starmer goes who replaces him. There is so little talent at the top of the party.

i fear Angela Rayner would be a disaster. I hate that she is held up as an example of working class done good, as someone from a w/c background it makes me cringe every time i hear it. She and I are nothing alike.

redange · 16/11/2025 16:09

A bit unfair on John Prescott: Prescott was very polite in company an intelligent man with genuine knowledge who was more similar to Lee Anderson than Raynor. .In terms of extravagance Prescott and (two fingers to the public) had a couple of relatively 'old' Jaguar Cars worth perhaps £15K in total. He also had a good career within the Merchant Navy.

Sure, Prescott was in many ways likeable (until he was revealed as having cheated on Pauline) which Angela Rayner’s never been. But the generality of his appointment to government and Rayner’s (former) position are similar.

InterestQ · 16/11/2025 16:35

I have to say I enjoyed Prescott on HIGNFY sparring with Ian Hislop. Available on YouTube.

I also liked Blair’s entirely resigned “John is John.” Just what he thought, not spinning, just a comment on a man he knew well and didn’t like eggs being lobbed at him.

No obfuscation.

I was not a fan of Prescott, but he definitely had some traits I admired, including that infamous south paw jab.

HMRC don't send a bill for SDLT, you self-report and pay what's owed or lie and don't.

She must think we came down in the last shower to believe that shite.

As for there being little talent at the top of the Labour Party, I'm not sure there's much talent across the entire breadth of their MPs. They're very much lacking in ideas and suitable people.

Another day, another tax.

Rachel Reeves is expected to announce a tax on milkshakes in the Budget later this month as part of efforts to make the public healthier.

The Chancellor is preparing to confirm she will end the exemption that milk-based drinks currently have from taxes on sugary beverages.

At present, the Soft Drinks Industry Levy applies to drinks such as Coca-Cola and Irn Bru. Producers pay at least 18p per litre on soft drinks containing 5g or more of sugar per 100ml.

As well as ending the dairy exemption, the Chancellor is planning to cut the threshold to 4g per 100ml. The changes will take effect in April 2027 and raise between £50m and £100m under current Budget plans.

They are likely to trigger fury in the soft drinks industry, which claims that a higher levy will push up supermarket prices by five per cent and only reduce calorie intake by the equivalent of half a grape per person, per day.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/11/2025 16:43

Milkshakes?!

What's that sound? 👂 Oh yes, the sound of a barrel being scraped!

EasternStandard · 16/11/2025 16:50

I saw the milkshake tax headline pop up and I nearly thought it a joke until I realised of course it’s Reeves and co

No
They'll just add more aspartame
A carcinogen

Reeves is in effect encouraging more ill health

It’s the Pasty Tax in new clothes!

The Milk Mark-Up? The Lactose Levy?
