Who’s put their Christmas tree up?

OP posts:
BerthaFlapjack · 09/11/2025 21:06

I don't really care what other people do. However, I have lots of interesting and fun things going on in my life and am fairly uninterested in Christmas. So here the tree, if we have one this year, won't go up until after the solstice on 21 December.

If people find comfort in their tree and want to put it up now I can't see why it's a problem for anyone else.

I love Christmas, and love decorating, we have lots of stuff up and loads of candles etc.
But I find that I enjoy the decorations for a couple of weeks, and then I am ready to return the room to less clutter.
We also have 2 birthdays between now and Christmas.
So our tree goes up in the first week of December, and comes down on twelfth night or when school goes back, whichever is first (feels really weird to have tree up after school goes bakc in Jan)

BUT I love the idea of outside lights being up all through the winter. Our lights died last year, so I am considereing buying some nice lights, and decorating outside of the house now and keeping them up til end of Jan.
But they would just be lights, not Christmas decs

In Scandanavia they put lights in the windows all winter. I really like that idea.

Whatttt? No. No!

It’s not even cold in London. There are autumn leaves everywhere. I haven’t put the heating on yet or taken my winter coat out. It’s not winter, let alone Christmas.

Behave! 🤣

That's how I feel! It's Autumn. It would feel weird putting it up now when it's a winter celebration really. Mine never goes up before December

@TheresGlitterAllOverMyHouseit's a Christian festival (2nd Feb) which marks the presentation of the infant Christ in the Temple & often involves the blessing of candles. Apparently our own dear (departed) QEII kept Christmas decorations up until Candlemas. I like winter greenery & some soft white lights up in Dec & Jan as I'm in a cold old house in Scotland & it cheers me. Christmas stuff is from 15th to Twelfth night for me though (for me defo not before Remembrance Day, though I walked through Edinburgh today & the Christmas wheel & huge food fair is next to the big Garden of Remembrance which was a bit jarring to me)

Where on earth do you live that this is normal?!

It’s becoming more normal as this thread proves and I’m sure eventually the Christmas period will be the whole of November and December!

I honestly think it’s got a lot to do with how miserable and gloomy life seems at the moment.

pizzaHeart · 09/11/2025 21:12

I don’t know anyone who put it yet, mine will go up somewhere in the second week of December.

@Arrrrrrragghhh
I never heard about Beaujolais Nouveau Day. How do you celebrate it? Could you not have Christmas tree up for this ?

FionnulaTheCooler · 09/11/2025 21:12

No but I'm doing it next weekend. We have various things on most weekends from the 22nd of November right up until the 20th of December so I'm going to do it while I have time to not have to rush it.

azafata2 · 09/11/2025 21:13

No. It's November. 12 days of Christmas not 40 days...

zazazaaarmm · 09/11/2025 21:16

Of course not.

WimpoleHat · 09/11/2025 21:19

I remember a really funny thread on here a few years ago. If I remember correctly, it was decided that how early your Christmas decorations went up and came down was almost exactly negatively correlated with your level of “posh”. So if you’re super smart and “U”, they go up on Christmas Eve pm and stay up until Candlemas (which I believe is mid Feb). Conversely, if you’re “non U”, it’s up on 1 November and down on Boxing Day. I wish I could find the thread as it was very amusing! It made me feel better about ours lingering until mid January out of sheer laziness…..!

it is lovely isn't it?

There is one street near us where every house has iron railings at the front, and they all put white lights on them for christmas. It looks lovely.

Couple of town centres I have seen with tree lined high streets (cheltenham is one) where they used to just have white lights in the trees as their christmas lights. I think this is so pretty, and would be happy to have them up from when the leaves vanished until they start growing again in the spring!

BebbanburgIsMine · 09/11/2025 21:25

Just DD and me here, we’ll be putting our tree up next weekend, we have a new one this year and we want to look at new decorations for it first. We’ll be doing that when we do our food shopping next Friday.

Would love to have it up just now, but we’ll wait.

I don’t care if someone puts their tree up on the 24th December, or the 1st day of any month, it’s not my business, I certainly don’t judge anyone for it, people can put their tree up whenever they want.

MrsZiggywinkle · 09/11/2025 21:30

No, because it’s November and I want to enjoy autumn for as long as possible. It’s my favourite season.

A Christmas tree doesn’t need to be up for two months. People who have their tree up are bloody weird.

3luckystars · 09/11/2025 21:30

Nobody!

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 09/11/2025 21:36

No! Ours goes up first weekend in December and that feels too early sometimes!

I love autumn and want to enjoy that first. It's been way too warm to feel like November yet.

youalright · 09/11/2025 21:40

Mines up, up in the loft where it will stay until December

Mumofsoontobe3 · 09/11/2025 21:42

Not me. 1 cat swings from it, the other is frightened of it and one sleeps in it, 2 kids under 2 and a 6 year old who will ask me every 5 minutes when Santa is coming. Christmas tree can hold on tight in the loft until mid-December!

Amy8 · 09/11/2025 21:51

Everyone on our street but us it seems

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 09/11/2025 21:52

Oh yes, my Xmas decs have been up since August 16th, when I got back from holiday in Spain.

The sprouts have been on the boil since September and the turkey’s going in the oven tomorrow. All to be super ready for Xmas day!

My neighbours don’t seem to share my keenness to prep for Xmas. They’ve taken to muttering about me, Xmas and Mumsnet - I’ve overheard them. And none of them has accepted my Xmas day dinner invites over the years.

But I don’t care. Now I’m in my Xmas PJs and snuggling down with hot choc, I’m happy.

Rosoz · 09/11/2025 20:15

Who’s put their Christmas tree up?

It's not Christmas yet. People are still letting off fireworks round here.

It will go up when DD comes home for Christmas from university.

Trool · 09/11/2025 21:54

Probably next weekend, we don’t actually celebrate Christmas, but was going through a lot of health stuff last year, cancer but it was the darkness of winter that was dragging my mental health down the most, kept moaning about wanting something twinkly and lights, so dh went out and got a cheap tree mid November and threw fairy lights and tinsel all over it, it just perked me up, back in the same position this year of health issues and darkness, so probably going to ask for it up soon.

evtheria · 09/11/2025 21:55

Not I!

AlexaBeQuiet · 09/11/2025 22:04

The only place a tree should be up, is up ⬆️ in the loft where it shall remain til the 6th December or more likely the 13th December this year.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 09/11/2025 22:05

@pizzaHeart
Beaujolais Nouveau Day is the third Thursday in November. It’s the release day for young ( delicious) wine of Beaujolais. It’s meant to drunk within 6 months so every year really is a new batch. It was a thing in the 80’s but theres a few gimmers like me (and my local pub) that celebrate. You basically have a nice French meal, lots of cheese and drink Beaujolais. Beret optional.

Back to Christmas trees. The reason for negativity is that if you normalise something it isn’t special anymore.
Like take away used to be for special occasions. It’s still yummy but if you have it every week it’s just another meal.

I'llBuyThatForADollar · 09/11/2025 22:09

Not yet but saw a house nearby that did on Friday and was absolutely delighted!
