Friend still believes in "chavs"?

Had a funny (well, slightly depressing) conversation today. my friend came round all flustered, telling me that she'd been "harassed by chavs" outside the shop. One was some teenager who asked for her number 🙄

Tried to explain that "chavs" aren't even real, it's a tabloid invented stereotype/myth from the early 2000s that was basically used to demonise working class people. But she just went on about it like she was quoting The Sun from 2004. I ended up showing her this article. She's 39.... and I expected her to know a bit better but what can ya do eh?

Just feels so outdated now. You don't really hear anyone say "chav" anymore (thankfully), and it's weird how those old class-based stereotypes still linger. I honestly felt like I'd timetravelled back to the Little Britain era 😂

Anyone else still know people who talk like that?

No, she was definitely killed by chavs.

You can't be killed by something that's a myth. That's like saying my friend got killed by Bigfoot.

My mother used to call them 'common'

The word may change but the concept endures.

My mum too. We were working class from a council estate, we had high standards of behaviour, but those that didn’t were called common before the word chav came about.

sunsu · 08/11/2025 16:47

This is one of the most batshit posts I’ve ever read. How can you possibly not see you’re wrong when so many people are here proving you wrong? You may not like the word but you can’t claim it’s ‘mythical’ because you don’t agree with it.

Also, leave Nessie out of this. Nobody on earth refers to a large fish as a “Nessie”. She’s not a fish nor a dinosaur. I hate seeing her mislabelled like this. #justicefornessie

MaryBeardsShoes · 08/11/2025 16:47

chavs aren’t working class people 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ chavs are layabout youths who exhibit antisocial behaviour.

Youre being utterly ridiculous!

Chav has nothing to do with money really, a chav can be anyone who is trying too hard to be high fashion in blingy branded clothing when in fact they have no taste or class- it's not a term to describe the working or befit classes on mass. Katie price is a chav in my understanding of what a chav is despite not being poor. It's the excessive wearing of heavily branded clothes, the over-applied makeup, the flashy cars, the blingy decor in her house etc.

Isn't Katie Price working class? Or have I got that wrong..?

Ooogle · 08/11/2025 16:49

So, despite everyone else saying that chavs are not all working class people and that they know of many people happily identifying as chavs, you are determined to believe they don’t exist?

am assuming you also feel the same way about other groups in society then. Goths aren’t real then? They are also mythical and made up and just people who prefer dark colours but absolutely not goths even if they identify as goths.

you have never met a chav so they must not be real. I have never met you so you must not be real.

Ooogle · 08/11/2025 16:50

Your friend got harassed and tried to talk to you about it and you made her feel like shit and came on here to make a bat shit thread

Judellie · 08/11/2025 16:51

You, op, are the awful Owen Jones - someone I hoped I'd never hear of again - and I claim my £5

Ibizaonmymind · 08/11/2025 15:30

You’re on to a loser there, Mumsnet hates OJ. 😄

I don’t use ‘ chav’ and don’t like it but a couple of my friends do. Of course it’s a slur but it is now used as shorthand for someone who looks common or cheap which is why you see it used on S&B threads a lot. Does this look chavvy? Etc.

Whilst it became a big thing in the 00s, in the area I grew up in the term was being used in the 80s. It was used by and to describe people from a traveller heritage along with pikey and charver. I’m not excusing it but it was widely used in my community.

Do you mean Irish Traveller? Or Romany? I'm interested in both groups.

RaiseTheBar · 08/11/2025 16:52

"Believes in chavs" is a really odd way of putting it. While I don't think it is necessary to call anyone a "chav", these people (whatever group of people the term refers to) exist, they aren't mythical elves or fairies and they presumably didn't cease to exist just because the term "chav" has fallen out of common usage.
In the same way that ch**k was a commonly used racist term for Chinese people, which has thankfully fallen out of usage, but Chinese people themselves still exist.

OnlyOnAFriday · 08/11/2025 16:52

And nice, normal working class people don’t harrass other people outside the shops.

I think this is the best, most simplest description of them for OP to get their head round (if they can be arsed). A lot of them happen to have the same taste in clothes but that’s by the by. Anyone who behaves in a decent and civilised way is not a chav regardless of their social status.

I'll trust the reputable sources. First link is from Cambridge University's website

Cambridge University doesn't know what a woman is so how reputable a source can they be?

PInkyStarfish · 08/11/2025 16:54

Council house and violent.

I’ll wager that there are many of these types that are still in existence.

OnlyOnAFriday · 08/11/2025 16:55

PorridgeAndSyrup · 08/11/2025 16:12

Exactly. If you didn’t have to walk the long way to school to avoid getting jumped by a gang of older teenagers who thought you’d looked at them the wrong way then you experienced a certain amount of privilege in your life, and it is very galling to hear people like that telling us off for giving a name to those people. It’s also very insulting to working class people to say it’s a working class thing. I knew plenty of working class families who worked hard and raised their children right, and didn’t spend their evenings standing in alleyways trying to intimidate people or participating in petty vandalism.

Completely agree. Must be nice to live in such a privileged bubble that you can deny people who behave like this exist.

Carla786 · 08/11/2025 16:55

MNLurker1345 · 08/11/2025 15:16

Chav is/was a term used to describe a type of person. Not a blanket term to describe the working class, despite what Owen Jones says!

I do know young people that do aspire to chav(ness). And not all of them are working class either. Idiots, you would call them!

Now, the “road man”, that’s another thread! I wonder what Jones has to say about that!

Roadman is used for Caribbean youths I thought? Who do similar antisocial things to chavs?

ginasevern · 08/11/2025 16:56

FlexiSadie · 08/11/2025 16:23

I agree with you, OP, but you'll find little support around here.

I obviously don't know for sure and am ready to stand corrected. But it's possible that you aren't often subjected to the behaviour of truly delinquent teenagers. Some areas on my estate are no-go zones, not because of blind prejudice but because you are likely to get stabbed, robbed or beaten to a pulp. And for reference, it is the working class people that live on the estate for whom this is a daily reality. Strangely they aren't as sensitive as you seem to be about the description of those that terrorise them.

OhMaria2 · 08/11/2025 16:56

waytoooldforthisshite · 08/11/2025 13:49

Working class people exist. both good and bad but what were referred to as "chavs" at least in my experience were just normal working class people who might've dressed in a certain way

Like seeing a fish and calling it "Nessie"

This is wrong. Chav is not another word for working class. They're the opposite of working class values and only a middle class person would confuse the two.

OnlyOnAFriday · 08/11/2025 16:57

Carla786 · 08/11/2025 16:55

The white chavs have claimed “roadman” for themselves as well. Badge of honour to be thought of as a road man, they think they’re well hard. 🤣🙈

must admit I don’t use the term chav or roadman, I quite like “skeffer”

hannahp4 · 08/11/2025 16:54

Goths are a real subculture, so no, goths aren't a myth.

What kind of friend are you OP that you’re more concerned about some chavs being called chavs than you are about your friend being harassed? A terrible friend is what. (Assuming any if this nonsense is even real).

Starandflowers · 08/11/2025 16:59

A chav is not working class because the majority of them don’t work. And quoting Cambridge University and saying they are a mythical creation like Nessie is top tier batshit MN

Round our way growing up they were Ned’s (Non Educated Delinquent) and they absolutely do still exist and get called that

Made me laugh after using that term in that context for years to move to London and find there is a 5 star hotel called The Ned
