I’m just curious what the results of this would be, if you could have another baby financially due to this being scrapped, will you?
before it becomes a benefit bashing thread, remember the majority of people claiming do work. Keep it civil and polite please 🙏
Im done having kids and I can see why they want it to be scrapped with the cost of living issues.

i plan on a third child regardless if it's scrapped or not. it wealthy by any means but not on the breadline either. average family with decent income and family help so saving on nursery fees.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 06/11/2025 15:54

Well i'm one and done but honestly, no I wouldn't if I were in that position

ClassicBBQ · 06/11/2025 16:08

No. That money is a drop in the ocean compared to the real cost of raising a child.

If your decision on having another child is dependant on this, then you really cannot afford a 3rd child

FlorenceAndTheVagine · 06/11/2025 16:11

I would never have a child knowing I couldn’t provide for them myself. I completely understand circumstances change, but having one purely because of the removal of a benefit cap? No.

I also think that parental and global resources mean that nobody needs to be having three children anyway, but I accept that’s not central to the issue.

Upsetbetty · 06/11/2025 16:17

I would highly judge someone if they use that as their reason to have a third child…

I agree with this.

elviswhorley · 06/11/2025 17:16

I would not have another child if the limit were capped.
However the extra money did allow me to have my second. I wouldn't have had her if I wasn't getting the UC.

This.

I also want to point out that CB is still a benefit.

Itsmetink · 06/11/2025 17:50

Agree you shouldn’t have more you can’t afford, that’s why I stopped at 2. But we’ve had the lowest birth rates in a long time so I do think many families rely on this extra payment and deal with the finances later.

Kids are not piggy banks.
Birth rates means nothing, but you are willing to have a child for money.

Are you saying you had a child for extra money.

Kosenrufugirl · 06/11/2025 17:58

It's not a lot of money however it could mean the difference between all children in a family attending extra-curricular activities or not.

Removing CB for the 3rd child was a mean and ill-thoughout idea.

Avie29 · 06/11/2025 17:59

Cap or no cap it wouldn’t affect my decision to have another, i am not having anymore anyway but i have 1 child i do not receive uc for and the fact i wouldn’t get uc didn’t even cross my mind when deciding to have her or not 🤷🏻‍♀️ xx

Needmorelego · 06/11/2025 18:01

Can I point out the two child limit has never been for "Child Benefit" (previously known as Family Allowance).
It was for tax credits/universal credits where you received a child element.
A few comments already on this thread have confused the two already.

elviswhorley · 06/11/2025 18:04

No, it goes right back on the child.

WhatNoRaisins · 06/11/2025 18:05

For me it's more that I can't face another pregnancy and we'd struggle to cope with more kids with the amount of practical support we have as a family. I think it's a good thing if it gets the birth rate up by making a wanted third baby a possibility for some but this isn't just a money based decision.

This! Child benefit for a third child is not worth getting knocked up for. It does however help the kids who are already here. Can’t imagine most couples would decide to have another for what is let’s face it a pittance.

It's NOT child benefit though.
That's different.

nightmarepickle2025 · 06/11/2025 18:21

It’s not child benefit, it’s UC and is worth about £3000 per year per child so not really a drop in the ocean

But it still sounds like having more kids for money.

Again kids are not piggy banks to be popped out for for cash for us tax payers to pay for.

I have always wondered how many families actually did have more children just for extra money.

Loads tbh but no one would say it.
I hate it i come from a family that did this hence why im so against it.
Ive even heard people say it I`ll just have another baby.
And the ones that have had kids and they have flown the nest or benefits stop for the youngest child they soon have another.
Its not love it being used.

modgepodge · 06/11/2025 18:34

But doesn’t feeding, clothing and housing another child cost more than £3k per year? Perhaps not when they’re a baby but later on.

I get that it may enable people who couldn’t afford it to consider it as they get a contribution from UC, but it won’t actually make them richer, will it?
