I’m just curious what the results of this would be, if you could have another baby financially due to this being scrapped, will you?
before it becomes a benefit bashing thread, remember the majority of people claiming do work. Keep it civil and polite please 🙏
Im done having kids and I can see why they want it to be scrapped with the cost of living issues.

@x2boys people really can't get that's it's not and has never been about "Child Benefit" 😂

I know ,they must think a lot of fuss is being made over £17.25 /week🤣🤣

I don’t see it as people having another child for the money, as that money needs to be spent on clothes/food etc so they aren’t building up savings from the extra money, it’s that the extra money allows them to afford another child until their circumstances change or they’re working full time. Obviously when people use it as a life style choice to avoid working that’s when I disagree.
it’s also a bug bear of mine when people in a small home have tons of kids they don’t have the space for, even those working and not claiming benefits, as someone mentioned above. It’s still a form of poverty.
Would anyone feel differently if the two child limit was scrapped only for children born between 2017-present? Not for any children born in 2026 onwards?

No one should have a baby based on child maintenance !

This.
If there’s money to spare, spend it directly to benefit the children please.

I agree.

I'd love to know how many MPs have made the same assumption/error over the years.

Loads tbh but no one would say it.
I hate it i come from a family that did this hence why im so against it.
Ive even heard people say it I`ll just have another baby.
And the ones that have had kids and they have flown the nest or benefits stop for the youngest child they soon have another.
Its not love it being used.

This is the experience in my family too.

People say 'well it's still only 3k a year but it's not is it's. Because as @Grilledxribs says, having another child gives you back the excuse not to seek work and entitlement to all the other benefits without hassle. I think the age limit may have come down now but even with the hassle, many know the system in terms of how to fail to get a job.

I do not wish to return to the depressing scenes of young women dragging round three and four kids.

It's not as bad as it was and those who suffered most have already been through it.

I think it's irresponsible because labour could only guarantee it for the period they are in power at best. But the type of person who pops out kids like this isn't the long term planning, responsible type (believe me, I do know because many of us lived through it).

We are planning a third anyway. Yes we are on UC. Decided to go for our last embryo after having a surprise natural pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage.

But why, when you can’t afford the ones you have without relying on the government and other people’s earnings? How will you give that child, and your existing children, enough?

We pay more in tax then we receive in UC, wouldn’t need the uc if we weren’t taxed so much. This won’t be the deciding factor in whether we have a third

We didn't claim CB for our 3rd for 2 years because we assumed the cap applied! The media narrative was very confused!

ChuckleClass · 18/11/2025 11:01

I don't agree with lifting the 2child cap. However I think if it does lift, it should only apply to the children who're already here, not to adults' future decisions to have more than 2 children for more money. How absurd!

Decembersunset · 18/11/2025 11:16

I have calculated that we've spent about 500k so far for my 3 (eldest is 10 y.o) , mostly in childcare and housing costs ,so I can't fathom how 300 a month would be an incentive. If you want to make money by caring for children, surely it makes more sense to foster/host students/work as a nanny as you would earn much more than 300 a month.
