I don't want to pay more fucking tax!

marthainthemarket · 04/11/2025 14:17

I am the sole earner in a family of four, earning just under 40k a year and getting probably fuck all or below inflation pay increase next year, if I am lucky enough to keep my job ( public sector and employer needing to make massive budget savings). I barely cope now.

I am so fucking angry that Labour fucked up the disability benefit cuts. Other countries don't have run away disability benefits crises because they have a proper assessment process that means they keep a lid on people getting disability benefits who don't really need them. But instead of dealing with that, they came up with a crap proposed cut that wouldn't have dealt with the actual issues and they couldn't defend.

And having fucked that up they are now raising everyone's tax. I hate them!

How can it be biased? Well if that’s the case your view is biased too!

Edited

Because if you’re basing your opinion solely on your lived experience only - it is biased. As mine would be… if I did that… but I do try to read around and look at alternative view points and read statistics etc to inform my opinions.

PeonyPatch · 04/11/2025 18:12

Interestingly, the Green Party seems to be gaining traction - who I voted for last election…

@PeonyPatchI’m not surprised. I thought it might happen pre leadership contest if Polanski won.

It does take votes from Labour though.

We need face to face PIP assessments to put an end to the gravy train.

Cut back on spending. Stop doing everything in their power to hammer businesses, drive out the wealthy and shrink the actual tax base. Acquaint themselves with the Laffer Curve.

Tbf I would rather they increased taxes across the board than fannying around with definitions of "working person" to tax the usual mugs some more.

The Laffer curve works both ways. Up to a certain point, increasing taxes increases revenue. We are not at the critical point yet.

Agreed. I work in MH too and those suffering from mild/moderate MH conditions need support in going to work and staying in work. Being signed off indefinitely should be a last resort for those who are severely unwell and unlikely to recover.

Have you seen the press lately? The epitome of biased! So no , I will rely on my lived experience thank you

cottonwoolie · 04/11/2025 18:23

Do you? I go through waves of thinking that as well, but I’m ever the optimist that things can change - but it will take some bold action, patience and perseverance.

I was optimistic ish up to the last few months.

I don't think any government will take the necessary steps. But I also think too many of the electorate don't want to recognise the reality & are still in the blame game mentality. It's bigger than one party but posters prefer partisan politics. These threads are indicative of that & incredibly depressing!

Was Brexit that bad to us? Or just a minor scratch so to speak. Yeah it's a bit annoying to go on holiday and it's silly trade with the EU is a bit more costly now.

But is it that bad?

Yes. It was really bad for nearly every group in the country. The complete lack of a post-Brexit plan resulted in political instability and chaos. It may have killed the Conservative Party.

You do you. But there is more to read than the mainstream press. There are lots of other places and materials you can engage with. But sure, you carrry on existing in your own bubble.

cottonwoolie · 04/11/2025 18:25

Evidently, but it says a lot about you!

Yes, you’ve got a fair point. I saw Kemi Badenoch on Sky news today and she was doing just that, gunning for Reeves and blaming the Labour Party - the presenter intervened and reminded her that it was the Tories who have been in power for much longer. It’s all become too much of a blame game. We need a cross-party approach, but I have little hope that will happen. It’s all become about power and ego. It’s quite boring in fact and frustrating.

Have you even bothered to look at how much is spent on disability benefits, how much disability benefits goes unclaimed, how incredibly tiny the rates of fraud are, and how much money is stolen by millionaires in this country? We need to close the tax loopholes for the likes of Amazon and the royal family.

Maybe look up, not down? Disabled people aren't your enemy. The media just wants you to think they are.

This

However much you are struggling OP, be thankful you are not disabled and struggling.

It can happen to anyone at any time.

The latest Work and Pensions Committee report Fraud and error in the benefits system shows that official data shows that there is nearly twice as much error as fraud in the benefits system.
The official figure for fraud is 0.7% yet the general public’s misperception is that it is 34 times higher (23%).
The Committee recommends that to, avoid public confusion, the DWP should publish statistics relating to the estimated level of benefit fraud on a separate day from those related to error in the benefits system.
Dame Anne Begg MP said:
"Statistics relating to benefit fraud are often conflated in media reporting with those relating to error; and people’s perceptions of the level of benefit fraud are completely out of kilter with the official estimate. This is not helped by the Government publishing all of the statistics simultaneously. Whilst we understand that the boundary between claimant error and fraud is not always clear, we believe that publishing separate summaries of estimated fraud and error rates would be helpful."
The report is also concerned how the DWP will manage the housing costs element of Universal Credit without increased risks of fraud and error.

What is they work cash in hand while claiming benefits?

Excellent result then? I will take a Reform government with Greens as main opposition.

Is that Reeves and Starmer’s new line?

CinnamonJellyBeans · 04/11/2025 18:30

I would be OK with paying more tax, but the amount of people in the UK who get free money for not working, or barely working makes this feel so unfair.

Lol, I am roughly same age as you and what you said happened is bollocks. Perhaps had you read the news at the time and looked at facts at the time and now then what you said wouldn't have been made up! Goodness me, it's laughable.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 04/11/2025 18:32

Well. Tories were kicked out. Everybody celebrated (including me). I'm sensing a bit of buyer's remorse. Not from you, OP. Just in general. Labour's MO is tax and spend until the country's finances are in the toilet, as they sink, they don't like apportioning blame on themselves, but accountability has to go somewhere, so they blame Tories and Brexit.

We can weather this storm. The country survived Gordon Brown (just), it can survive Rachel Reeves (I hope).

When my parents were still alive, a council worker asked me whether my parents were paying the council to cut their grass and hedge for them.

When I answered in the affirmative, he was outraged. (I'm an only child - my husband was clearly disabled following a stroke and my parents were obviously too frail to do it themselves by then. I was working full time and doing the rest of the gardening for them.)

He informed me that he was sick of finding himself doing the work for 'single parents' who weren't paying at all - in good weather, he was having to ask their partners to move their sun loungers.

His behaviour to you was unreasonable. Sadly gaming and cheating has been going on for decades.

dottiehens · 04/11/2025 18:34

I can come back in 30 years and people would be repeating the same thing. Like parrots and still taxed to death. Services still not good and generations of families playing the system. Probably the Tories still being blamed too. 🥱

What is the Tories MO has they presided over a fair bit of tax rises?
