Another fatal dog attack

I felt sick when I just saw this on Sky News. A nine month old baby in Wales. Its desperately sad. But when is anything going to be done about those dangerous dogs. Legislation is needed.

It’s rarely the scumbags who buy these chavhounds who get killed is it. It’s children or the elderly.

It’s time for a complete ban - humane euthanasia for these breeds.

Child protection are already inundated. I don’t know what alerting them to the presence of a dangerous dog in the house would do. They would have to put the child on n a plan and give the parents the chance to do the right thing and rehome the dog. There’s not enough foster homes as it is.
That said, I would be really uncomfortable with assessing a home environment as ‘safe’ when they had an XL bully. It’s like having a loaded gun at home.

XL Bullies aren't allowed to be sold or rehomed under the ban so the choice is keep the dog and run the risk of an attack or have it pts.

hobbledyhoy · 05/11/2025 20:33

Well what a surprise.

it’s time to euthanise what remains of these hideous dogs.

They're another disastrous American inport, the first being the American Pit Bull Terrier, banned under the original Dangerous Dog Act. The XL Bully has caused a far higher number of fatalities than the APT and the Govt didn't act quick enough to ban it imo.

MellowPinkDeer · 05/11/2025 20:55

People should just be less shit. It’s a person problem not a dog problem. It’s people that have these horrid dogs, they aren’t cute, they aren’t friendly, what on earth is the appeal?

Storyplots · 05/11/2025 21:10

Not surprised to hear it’s a XL bully.

Yeah kind of repeating myself but this comes back to what I said at the start of this thread -

The existing legislation and guidance doesn’t really cover the home since they don’t have to wear muzzles at home.

I feel dangerous dogs should be PTS. None of this rehoming or being told to muzzle . I mean there was that school girl in Birmingham who was attacked by an escaped XL bully.

It’s just passing the buck by moving them onto a home with no children. They’re still a risk to society. Dogs escape from houses all the time and these kind can easily kill grown men too so everyone’s at risk.

Im not either . It was always going to be one of 'those' breeds. I read a day or two ago it was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Its about time every one of those dangerous breeds are eradicated. Sick to death of all the oh but excuses. And certificates of exemption??? Wtf. Let's keep a Bengal tiger in the garden as long as we've got a certificate of exemption its ok.

Can’t stand Stafford terriers either although I know they’re not a banned breed and don’t seem quite as bad as XL bullies . Are they the ones people foolishly call the nanny dog? I was getting off a bus in Liverpool years ago and a staffy that was getting on with its owner lunged at me. Thankfully the owner was a fairly strong looking man who managed to restrain it and I moved quickly away too. But it was still very unpleasant. The fact he was taking it onto a crowded bus is concerning too.

Had another Pitbull terrier looking type dog lunge at me twice in my former apartment block and again it took me moving fast and the owner holding firm to avoid any contact. The owner was a very slim young woman and tbh I feel it’s a matter of time before that dog overpowers her . I reported it the second time it happened but nothing was done. Thankfully I moved out a few months later anyway.

And yes the certificate of exemptions are ridiculous.

Storyplots · 06/11/2025 06:35

I’ve just found this article from a couple of years ago about an attack involved Turkish Kangals which shows the absolute madness and level of dog nuttery in this country.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12344405/amp/Millionaire-builders-three-pet-Turkish-Kangals-ransacked-neighbours-garden-killing-hens-bit-man-face-chased-terrified-jogger.html

“The attack - which happened in Lloyd Park in Croydon, close to where Dr Ansari has a gated-off compound - is thought to be the fourth time his dogs have struck after getting loose.
They were removed from his care in April after two attacks on other dogs but were later returned under strict conditions that he make sure they were kept somewhere secure.
However, around 6am on Friday they broke free and targeted a chicken coop in a neighbour's garden where they ripped apart three hens. One died instantly and two others had to be euthanised because of their injuries.”

This is just one example of dangerous dogs escaping but I’m sure there are many more. Why the heck was he allowed to get these clearly powerful dogs back after they escaped and attacked other dogs? They should’ve been PTS instead they were able to return to him, escape again and attack not only more animals but humans too. I really hope they were PTS after that last attack.

This vile owner was obviously massively careless for them to get loose that many times but even more conscientious owners can slip up and let a dog escape. And it just takes once for them to severely harm someone.

Unless you live on a Remote island with no neighbours, there’s no real way to guarantee you can keep your dangerous dog away from everyone else let alone the people in your household.

I just read a report saying it was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

That was bullshit then

Absolutely agree and the Government are being negligent in allowing these deaths to keep happening. Where are they protecting the general public here?

FlyMeSomewhere · 06/11/2025 09:23

The reason these dogs take so long to have their breed identified after an attack is because they are a mutant breed! A badly bred dog created by idiots that just wanted a status dog. The fact that this breed is a mutant breed is why they are flawed and the stats are horrendous for these dogs now!

The usual types are on line defending, the mother of young kids claiming her 2 XLs are angels etc but what do these people plan to of their dogs which could reach a combined weight of up to 24st go on the attack!

I saw a small thin woman in my town walking one of these XLs and it had a krad like a bison! And she was walking with with no shoes and socks on! She would have been worthless if it gone for someone or another dog.

My mum is in her 70's and she's passed unmuzzled XLs when she's out with out with her little dog - she and her little dog probably wouldn't stand a chance if an XL launched at them and this is unfair! These dogs don't belong in society!

LivelyMintViper · 06/11/2025 10:27

Part of the problem is that these dogs often do appear as angels. People are not likely to allow a perpetually growling snapping dog near their children. So there is very little , or no ,warning before these apparently docile and loving animals attack. Predictably the owners are then amazed because this dog had never done anything like that before. Even a minimal amount of research into the genetic background of xl bullies would show a terrifying trend. So depressing

Sadly it's a dog problem. They are selected for their attacking attributes...
Not even a very experienced dog person, training and socialising could prevent an attack if one of these animals decides to turn.

Those breeds need to be made completely illegal. And everyone of those killer dogs put down. Its perfectly obvious to anyone with half a braincell they are not safe.

The appeal, for some people, is that they like having a dog whose appearance arouses horror and fear.

BeepBoopBop · 06/11/2025 14:43

Two XL bullies savaged a horse so badly last week it was PTS and another severely injured. A pony was also injured.

A dog lover all my life, I would have no issues if every last one of these XL bullies were PTS. This situation is untenable.

RunnyBunny · 06/11/2025 17:25

The trainer Jo Haffenden was on Jeremy Vine explaining that the ban/regulations are to blame for bully attacks because it means they don’t get the socialisation. and exercise they need due to being kept indoors. Completely missing the point that before the ban these dogs were killing people DESPITE being free to socialise and exercise 🙄

This, you cannot out-train instinct.

Pointers will point, collies will herd, terriers will kill small furry things, and Lurchers and sighthounds will chase - It’s literally in their DNA. Unfortunately that also means XL bullies will fight, and will kill.

Unfortunately, the morons who choose these dogs as family pets don’t have enough brain cells to understand that.

Exactly. Unfortunately the “nanny dog” myth (which isnt even true of staffies) still gets linked to any bully breed. People going on about their sweet lil’ pibble.

Absolutely, and they aren't safe dogs to socialise because the owners have nowhere near the strength required to control these dogs if they do snap!

Pelepets · 06/11/2025 21:28

There's no justification for owning these disgusting types of dog (they're not breeds, they're a newly created huge mistake). They are bred to fight. To lock on and fight to the death. That is what they are bred for. Dog fighting is illegal. No one should be allowed to own one. Full stop.

Suggesting it's reasonable for anyone to own one is like suggesting it's reasonable for anyone to own a gun. Or a fucking wolf. Euthanise the sodding lot of them. No one with a brain will miss them.
