Another fatal dog attack

I felt sick when I just saw this on Sky News. A nine month old baby in Wales. Its desperately sad. But when is anything going to be done about those dangerous dogs. Legislation is needed.

Right so owners need to get a grip, and realise they have an animal in the house, not a trusted family member who would never ever harm them or their child. Your dog is scared of fireworks? So why is it anywhere fucking near your child during the evenings this time of year?

Or any time of year. Dogs can get startled by many things.

hobbledyhoy · 03/11/2025 20:33

I’ve a baby the same age, the thought of what happened to that poor soul makes me sick to the stomach.

I know people in this country love their dogs but some of these breeds should be destroyed and licences should definitely be brought back.

Try not to dweel on it.

When my little one was a few months, a baby the same age died in an earthquake in my home town.

When she was three, a local three year old was abducted and killed.

When she was twelve, some twelve year olds died in a swimming accident.

The horror of it does hit you harder but try not to dwell on it.

For the love of god people. Stop arguing your I love all dogs vs I think all dogs are dangerous agendas right now. A baby has died. A dog has died. Isn't that enough shit for today?

Sorry but it is not. Yet another child has been killed by a dog. This time a baby of 9 months. This means more needs to be done to stop this happening. Children (and adults) need to be protected.

It is undeniably tragic, but far more babies/children are killed each year by a parent or step-parent, I presume you do realise that? So how do we stop that happening?
Children and adults need to be protected from humans first and foremost. Dogs are really the least of our worries.

You can avoid having a dog (or a step-parent, come to that) around your child.

It’s harder to avoid parents.

AlexaBeQuiet · 03/11/2025 22:41

I don’t believe the circumstances have been made known yet?

What breed of dog
Did it live at the same address as the baby boy or was it visiting
Was the dog alone with the baby when the attack happened or were other adults present

Until all the facts are known it’s difficult and not right to speculate.

Viviennemary · 04/11/2025 12:42

The details haven't been released. Its gone very quiet. The powers that be must know that more legislation re dog ownership is required.

It’s very normal in press cycles for things to “go quiet”. They do the big headline to get clicks, then decide which stories are worth a follow up and which get quietly dropped or left to regional news to keep alive. They will also be waiting for more info from police.

Dont read anything into that.

What makes you think we need more legislation? The anti-XL bully legislation was brought in to much fanfare and on the fave of it is tough, but it has not been enforced. Why would any new laws be better observed?

Of course we need more regulation re these dangerous dog breeds.

They haven't said what the breed was.

I read a report that said it was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

You can’t blame the fireworks. A dog could be spooked by a car backfiring, someone jamming on the horn, a ball hitting a window.

Keep large dogs away from small children

It's not about size. People have been killed by Jack Russells and Staffies, neither of which is a large breed.

Notagain75 · 04/11/2025 13:30

What sort of legislation do you think will prevent attacks like this?
There is already legislation about owning dangerous dogs, in fact there are already over 20 pieces of legislation that apply to dog ownership in Britain. Including laws on controlling your dog in your own home, and five breeds of dogs are banned.
Short of not allowing people with children to own dogs (and there is no chance of that getting through parliament) or possibly making people take a dog ownership course which I'm not convinced would help anyway. I can't think of any new laws that would make a difference.

This is the most direct and sensible post on the entire thread.

Any bulky breed is PTS?

peakedat40 · 04/11/2025 13:40

Normally when there is a dog attack there is an overwhelming likelihood it is a bull breed.

With babies that’s less clear. They are so vulnerable it could be any breed … there have even been jack russells who have killed babies, which is awful to think of.

I imagine it isn’t a retriever or spaniel, though. Or a cockerpoo, much as MN hate them.

LostInManhattan · 04/11/2025 13:43

That should read bully breed not bully

What do you term a bulky breed? That would include the big placid dogs like Newfoundlands and Leonbergers, which are not known for aggression.

Edited to add - sorry, just read your edit. Bully breed.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 04/11/2025 13:47

My BIL is all "he wouldn't hurt a fly/he's so good with SIL's nephew" - about his rehomed lockdown puppy Rottweiler.

Fortunately, MIL is on our side about his never being in the presence of our toddler. She dogsits sometimes, and they had guests around and the dog was shut away - it became very upset and barked loudly endlessly.

I frankly don't care that we hardly see BIL as a result now. He can own whatever pets he likes, but if he's going to be dumb as a brick about his nephew's safety, he's no loss.

The fatality list on Wiki includes an English Springer Spaniel, Weimaraner, Fox terrier, two Lakeland terriers and a Patterdale terrier. None of which are bull breeds or large breeds.
