Another fatal dog attack

I felt sick when I just saw this on Sky News. A nine month old baby in Wales. Its desperately sad. But when is anything going to be done about those dangerous dogs. Legislation is needed.

The ones specifically bred to be dangerous in temperament and build muscles in certain places such as their jaw. These dogs have been literally designed this way. In the same way you’ll struggle to stop many terriers chasing small furries because that is their job.

I was referring to the fact that they haven't said what sort of dog was involved in this incident.

I wasn't saying I don't know what a dangerous dog is 🙄

LandSharksAnonymous · 03/11/2025 19:29

If there needs to be an enquiry to establish what the breed is, then it almost certainly is either a banned breed or very close to being one.

That being said, the breed is rather irrelevant. Almost any dog breed could kill a baby. I know someone with quite significant facial scaring after 5kg dog bit her on the face and took a chunk out of her cheek.

Ultimately,99.9% of dogs do not just snap and kill a baby or even bite randomly. There are always warnings and signs. Even if a dog is scared of something like fireworks, their first instinct is not to attack a baby. That's not how it works. So, either the warning signs were ignored, or the baby and dog were left alone. Poor ownership either way and a mark of people not fit to own a dog.

I feel sorry for the baby. Poor thing.

Gofaster2023 · 03/11/2025 19:32

For the love of god people. Stop arguing your I love all dogs vs I think all dogs are dangerous agendas right now. A baby has died. A dog has died. Isn't that enough shit for today?

Ihateboris · 03/11/2025 19:33

Just heard on LBC that it was a terrier type breed

Rowgtfc72 · 03/11/2025 19:35

Terribly sad.
I had two jack Russells when dd was born. The health visitor did discuss safety round the baby.
Its not difficult to have both a baby and a dog, you just have to never, ever leave them alone together.

Storyplots · 02/11/2025 23:17

How sad.

I don’t know the details of this specific case but the issue with legislation is it’s usually focused on controlling these dogs outside of the home.

The children who are killed by the dogs are usually the owners children or relatives who are inside the home. So they don’t get any protection basically.

Totally agree and it’s completely illogical. “Your dog is too dangerous to be outside without a muzzle but feel free to have as many as you like at home with your children”.
The law should require the dogs be removed from homes with children, no matter how much people whined about their fluffy babies who wouldn’t ever hurt anything.

Far too much adoration of dogs in this country. Can't open your mouth about the danger unless willing to get an earful of excuses about the lovely cuddly animal who wouldn't touch you. Until they do.

I think anyone with children under 18 living in the house should be banned from owning any kind of breed of dog.

But sigh.... I suppose enforcement is the issue, and lack of awareness of the dangers posed and entitlement to do whatever they want, and their rights and....

Are you including pugs, golden retrievers, cavalier spaniels in your proposed ban? If so, why?

The issue is XL Bullies. The XL Bullies is in this country have mostly been bred from a dog called Killer. I’ll leave you to do the research.

IwishIhadcheese · 03/11/2025 19:47

Rest in peace little one.

If the dog did this as a result of being scared by fireworks it really wouldn’t matter what bread it was. Any distressed dog could be capable of causing serious injury to a little baby.

Viviennemary · 03/11/2025 19:49

I just read a report saying it was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

The problem with the Dangerous Dogs Act and any legislation is you are expecting police officers to be able to identify dog breeds. And dog breeds are difficult to determine. Then you go down the “features” line and that is also unhelpful.

It’s awful what has happened but like with many things legislation isn’t necessarily the answer. Education, enforcing of safeguarding standards from people involved in families etc.

Sounds like some sort of cross, there are dozens of pedigree terrier breeds.

VaccineSticker · 03/11/2025 19:52

Horrific.
Few weeks ago I was at a local supermarket and a lady on her mobility scooter was just making her way inside the supermarket with her ‘guide dog’ who looked like everything but a guide dog. He looked like a super viscous breed (not your usual labs guide dog type of dog). The dog was out of control and she nearly lost the lead: to top it all up, he was not neutered. You could literally see his massive bits.
People were moving away from her and the dog which confirms what I thought. He was an illegal breed in the guise of a guide dog in a high vis jacket.

What I want to say that it is time that owning dogs should carry a licence and these illegal breeds have got to go.

3678194b · 03/11/2025 19:53

Terrible, terrible news. I don't know how you ever get over that. It was the family dog I think too?

I saw on TV it's undergoing tests to determine the breed, then the police with announce back, just to say that makes it sound like it might be a banned breed.

You are absolutely right. On a side note, fireworks should be banned!

LivelyMintViper · 03/11/2025 20:06

If all dogs needed rfids which carried breed information surely it would be easy to scan and seize any either unchipped or without a required muzzle.

intrepidpanda · 03/11/2025 20:06

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 03/11/2025 19:18

What dangerous dogs? They haven't said what the breed is. It could be a Cockerpoo or a Westie...

Westies are vicious to be fair. Nobody would leave a child with a Westie

I saw a dog bite on someone's arm on the ambulance programme last week. Horrendous. I can't begin to think what would happen to a baby.

Yes I saw that. That woman’s arm had such deep puncture wounds and I thought about what a fatal attack must look like.

Horrific

Right so owners need to get a grip, and realise they have an animal in the house, not a trusted family member who would never ever harm them or their child. Your dog is scared of fireworks? So why is it anywhere fucking near your child during the evenings this time of year?

Lointern · 03/11/2025 20:12

Just awful news.

However more of the recent attacks seem to be inside family homes which makes me feel less anxious about being out and about with my dcs. There don't seem to be as many attacks on the street or in parks compared to a few years ago. I know I wouldn't visit any homes with dangerous dogs (don't even know anyone with one) and most parents wouldn't.

Legislation won't happen, sadly. Starmer is unable to identify a woman, out of 2 genders, so his brain will explode if he is forced to identify dangerous dog breeds out of several 100.

Seriously though, some people are just terminally stupid, and you can't legislate for stupid.

Well, your last paragraph sort of proves your first.

All dogs can turn on you. All of them have that potential and no matter if it's small or big it's going to do serious and often fatal damage to a child or baby. Humans come first in my book, maybe not in yours. You see, there it is just as I predicted, a justification for owning any dog other than XL and similar in a house with children.

I'm right though. All dogs have the potential to harm, they are not humans but many think they are.

Exactly.

I’d even go as far to say they should be destroyed.

I mean even they go to a house with no kids who’s to say they won’t ever have child visitors over or it won’t attack a delivery person or a kid who comes round trick or treating? Or it won’t one day get loose from a house and find its way onto the street unleashed and attack a child or adult?

I don’t understand keeping dogs that have been deemed dangerous alive. Unless someone is able to take the dog and live on a remote private island or something they’re still going to be a risk to society.
