To be scared about how we will cope with more tax rises - council tax

i really loathe this government. Usually with politics I feel like whoever is in charge I don’t notice much of a direct impact on my day to day life. Yes I’m aware of slow erosions in public services and I was no fan at all of the tories, I voted for this government im ashamed to say, and they lied and lied about their plans. I am so much worse off and if they double council tax bands virtually all of our disposable income is going to be gone. It feels like theft. I don’t trust them to spend the money I make properly it all feels corrupt and it’s just so depressing and upsetting.

Im band G. Modern-ishvhouse on an estate. South East. Single parent. Close to retirement. The cost to sell and downsize wasnt worth it after divorce. So I stayed. Feel very betrayed.

We're band G. It's a nothing much to look at 4 bed 80s house in a suburban cul de sac. We pay £360 a month in council tax already. A doubling of that would be horrendous for us.

So you live in a very big house op? Have you considered... Moving? Council tax desperately needs reform, have you ever looked into it? People in Westminster pay less than people in Yorkshire, for example. The bands are all wrong and outdated.

I don’t live in a very big house but it’s a band G. Why the fuck should we move out of our family home that we have been living in for 10 years because someone thinks it’s reasonable to double our council tax? Someone buying a house in Yorkshire will most likely have paid a lot less in stamp duty for the same size house. Is that going to be changed? They will also pay a lot less in train fairs - the equivalent commute fair to what I pay in the SE is half the cost where I grew up in Yorkshire. People in the SE don’t have a magic money tree and they don’t all earn twice as much as people elsewhere.

Gruffporcupine · 03/11/2025 06:35

It's unfair because larger homes do not mean more services used necessarily. They should revise the council tax system, but this is not the right way to go about it

Was no fan of Rishi Sunak but he warned everyone about Labour and tax.

@Gruffporcupineit was under rishi sunak that taxes rose to the highest they've ever been...

@Boohoo76so again, move somewhere cheaper.

It's just an economic reality.

I'm from the south east and I moved because I couldn't afford to live there. So now I live some distance from family. Is that fair?

Squibbling about you shouldn't have to do something makes you sound about 5.

This is not the case. Tax on the average / median worker is lower than it's ever been.

You sound very bitter and as though you want to drag others down because of your own circumstances. Like many in the UK unfortunately

So you’re expecting everyone in the SE to move? Who are you expecting to buy their houses? Seems like you are trying to crash the economy. Who is that going to help?

And arguing against an unfair tax makes me sound about 5? So now we’re all just expected to absorb any rise whatsoever? Well I’m voting for your mortgage to double. How does that sound?

Wouldn't bother. Bitter people can't understand second and third order effects of policy and just think anyone with slightly nicer things than them should suffer

It’s a worry for everyone . I don’t thimk
this awful government will stop until we’re all bankrupt but then part of me is defiant in that they can’t havd what people haven’t got and you
don’t go to jail for debt and even if you did there aren’t enough spaces . Never before have I heard so many of my friends saying they’re going to spend everything they’ve got , savings , pensions and they’ll just rely on the state because there is no incentive tk work , save and do the right thing anymore . All this government are doing is tsking
from people and there’s absolutely no coherent plan for growth .

how will they rely on the state if the systems have collapsed completely ( if they haven't already)
I would think this is the v worst time to.try to rely on state benefits.

IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Stop this nonsense and read some beautiful poetry. Go to an art gallery and support your local library.

The council has closed said library, after selling the land to developers in a corrupt deal that benefits nobody except the council executives and their pension funds.

Where do you think we will end up if we continue with the extreme passivity and head in the sand behaviours that brought us Boris and now the Keir person?

They are planning on doubling council tax for the higher bands. For people in London and other expensive areas or people whose homes have gone up in value it’s going to be awful. We are already struggling to pay our huge council tax bill on a 3 bed semi home in the south east and if they announce these plans that’s another £3,600 a year we have to hand over, more than a month of my salary. I simply can’t afford it.

Either you didn’t read the news properly or you’re being disingenuous.

No 3 bed semi is band G or H and being in London is irrelevant to this. Some areas of London have the cheapest council tax in the country.

For the first time in my life I’m worried about the budget, and I am ancient. So if we all have to sell our houses because we can’t afford the council tax who’s going to buy them? They’ll be worth far less for a start.

The sheer incompetence of this government is breathtaking.

I’m currently buying a Band F house - it’s £1.2m. It wouldn’t be impacted by the council tax proposal changes.

If you’re in a house that is, you can probably afford it.

If everyone did this then it would be absolutely terrible for those that live outside London and the South East as it would cause house prices to escalate rapidly. I say this as someone that lives in one of the other regions and the last thing we need is relatively rich Southerners outbidding local people on property.

We also really need London and the South East to remain economically strong. They massively subsidise the other parts of the UK and it does nobody any good for them to weaken.

NestEmptying · 03/11/2025 07:06

They are looking at doubling it for the top two bands only. G and H. Most of us won't be affected.

The problem with all taxation now is that there is an inverse relationship between paying more tax and receiving services. Those who pay the least/nothing at all now receive vastly most then everyone else and demand ever more is spent on them whilst general services are cut to the bone. There will always be an element of this as we can't ask our most vulnerable to contribute their fair share but there is a point where we are literally bankrupting ourselves as a state to fund all of this and some are being asked to contribute an extortionate amount for what it is for all intents and purposes becoming a form of enforced charity as there is no expectation that the person paying double will get anything for their increased contribution.

£800 a month in council tax is insane - in recent memory that would have been seen as quite a sizeable mortgage…!

It would be more than our first mortgage.

Lots of people will be though. Not everyone in a band G or F house has significant disposable income.

It’s beginning to feel like communism - workers money being taken to be given to welfare claimants. Is the plan we all have the same a flat rate per month?

A sizeable portion of ‘welfare’ (I think you mean benefits) claimed are also workers….
