What will Starmer do if Huntingdon...

Stabbing turns out to be terror related or in a similar vein to incident to recent incidents that were related to immigration ? We don't know the identities yet of the perpetrators. But the fact the Home Secretary is brought in to comment in tabloids and the discussion on LK on BBC today makes me worried its a possibility. The poor people on the train - I cannot even imagine .. ..Starmer needs to tackle knife crime as its rife. What is the answer ? When is there a tipping point ? I don't know but something must be done - I've never paid as much attention other than feeling so terribly sorry for any victims and families. Now I'm starting to get angry when I see anything like this

I think there’s also an element of not wanting to face up to what is going on.

Mental illness, real mental illness, means that the sufferer is not wholly accountable for what they do - at some level it’s beyond their control and they can’t help it.

The murder of Jonathan Zito springs to mind.

By assuming that any horrific act of violence against a random stranger is an episode of ‘mental health’, we don’t have to confront the fact that sometimes these things are done with intent by people who truly do mean us harm and want to inflict as much damage as possible.

On one level planning mass murder of any sort does, I feel, indicate an unsound mind - normal people wouldn’t think about doing that. But carrying out such an act doesn’t have to be the result of a ‘mental health episode’. If it was, then all wars could be attributed to a breakdown in mental health.

Agreed.

When I started working in psychiatry almost 30 years ago, I thought everyone experiencing a serious mental illness was a good person who had a horrible illness afflict them.

And that's the case in my experience for the majority.

But there are an awful lot of absolutely fucking terrible people who just happen to have a mental illness. The same as there are wonderful people who get cancer and some absolute bastards that do too.

And it's very, very rare that an individual who is a risk to the public is purely because of their mental illness.

If you’re a British national then you’re British.

But you said you were foreign, so I’m guessing you don’t identify as such, regardless of legal nationality?

I identify as British. "Foreign" as in foreign-born as I dont want to specify where exactly.

WonderfulSmith · 02/11/2025 15:04

It's not about immigration as a whole It's about uncontrolled immigration and the amount of migrants coming across the channel. I live in the south so boat crossings feature quite often on my local TV news programme. There was one report that showed a boat crammed full with young men. A woman was trying to get on the boat but they wouldn't let her and kept pushing her away. There was also a man with his two young children and wife trying to get on as well, not one of the men helped them and the children looked really distressed. I can't believe anyone is OK with these boat crossings. Having to suddenly find accommodation for sometimes as many as 800 men in one day is putting a huge financial burden on this country. We cannot afford it. We don't know who these men are, whether they have already been refused asylum elsewhere or whether they are criminals.

Well that has little relevance here. These two men were British born.

I'm foreign, but my DC were born here, can only speak English and never lived in any other country. You are going to tell me they are not English/ British? I also been here for over 30 years, studied here, worked, paid taxes, bought property, my life is the same as any other boring UK resident - I never go back to my home country nowadays - so am I not British?

Would my skin colour, religion and country of origin make a difference?

You are probably more aligned with British values and have better English communication skills than some whose ancestry in England go back centuries.

What does it matter?

It obviously matters enormously to some people that more brown people are becoming British citizens.

HPFA · 02/11/2025 15:04

Amazing how quickly people have switched from claiming this is all about immigration to just straight racism about Black communities.

This country has lost its head. Broadcasters now have to state the nationality of suspects at the top of news reports. Maybe they should always state the nationality and race of everyone suspected or convicted to show the public that the vast amount of offences in the UK are committed by white British people and that has long been the case

As England has a predominance of white people then yes the majority of crime is committed by white British people. However it’s impossible to say what factor ethnicity plays in crime as the police do not currently record or report it as part of crime statistics. It may well be that certain ethnicities are over represented for certain types of crime, it’s important information to have particularly for prevention.

I can’t believe the social media literally there is more about the fact they wanted them to be immigrants or Muslims in general and our dissapointed that they may not be 🙈 than there is any real emotion for any of the victims.

Sadly, not in the least surprised.

Legally they’d be British nationals (or dual nationals if America allows that), but I suspect they’d still “feel” American.

My DH was not born in this country - and "feels" and IS British. With some cultural affiliations to the culture of his parents

My BIL was not born here and did not become a British Citizen until he married my DSis - he feels British and finds his past weird and alien like another life, another person, and doesn't identify with that country at all.

I wasn't born in London but I have lived here longer than I have lived anywhere else, more than two thirds of my life and I feel like a Londoner. through and through - but I have understandings of people brought up in post-mining areas, rural areas.

Identity is a very complex issue and you can't tell anything by 'suspecting'

LaserPumpkin · 02/11/2025 15:05

localnotail · 02/11/2025 15:02

Nope. The complaints were mainly due to racial difference (imperceptible to us) - like her hairline and features which were considered by the Japanese as being inferior and unacceptable for a Geisha.

People who are ethnically Chinese and people who are ethnically Japanese do look quite different, though. So I can understand why they thought it was inappropriate as geishas are something specific within ethnic Japanese culture.

IFartAlot · 02/11/2025 15:06

pointythings · 02/11/2025 14:38

One could argue they are more so, because they actively chose to be British, and put in a lot of work to get there...

How many generations do you think someone needs to be British to be considered 'British enough'? And are you or are you not disturbed by the way Britishness is now being equated with skin colour?

More British? Seriously? More British than someone who can trace their lineage to these isles from the 1600s?

Some say 1945. Others say 1900.

BIossomtoes · 02/11/2025 14:55

Of course it isn’t. Speeding up processing would mean asylum seekers with legitimate claims could start working, paying taxes and start building a life. Obviously some people don’t want that.

The process does not need 'speeding up' it needs to be more thorough with strict measures in places such as no docs/no passport no entry.

Arriving with a new iPhone but no passport should equal immediate deportation.

We need to know who these young men are surely you can see that?

Or, scared 'little people' sick and tired of these frequent atrocities that are usually caused by people with fucked up ideologies. We aren't allowed to say that though because the government tells us to be quiet.

I am not talking about the very small minority of posts from people expressing nerves or worry - even where they were being bit speculative.

I am talking about posts using extremely vitriolic/hateful language - and the sheer numbers of lies that were being bandied about. Tommy R and his ilk are hardly shaking in their boots.

I think the issue was mainly because Japanese considered her physically inferior because of being Chinese.

So someone migrating here from America is still American even if they apply for British citizenship because that's where they were born.

You can have dual nationality - my DC do. They could also have British citizenship via the Irish ancestry route if they wanted to, which would give them three nationalities. All completely above board.

It’s hateful to want to offer refuge to a mother and daughter from Sudan?

I think you’re typing whatever because you know the system is dangerous and hard to defend.

ETA your response is so bizarre perhaps you just didn’t read at all.

No I’ve just watched you descend from blaming all immigrants to being openly racist when, yet again, you’ve been proven wrong on the identity of the attacker

Literally on the other thread people kept asking if they were black and I was like I am confused as you are talking about the illegal on dingy boats and Islamic extremists
how is knowing they are black knowing they are either of those things.

then it turned out they were British born and descends of carribean and then it was well still black
it’s horrible. I am white British and we do need to understands that breed also breeds hate and we need to do better to !

It’s absolutely terrifying. People wonder how hitler and the Nazis got into power, but then you see thinking like this being cited as being the norm.

Gloriia · 02/11/2025 15:09

EasternStandard · 02/11/2025 15:00

The system isn’t great, it promotes crime, risk, death even on the way. Verifying claims is difficult, how do you obtain proof? Many defend it even though it’s a hugely profitable crime racket.

If I could offer refuge it would be to eg a mother and daughter from Sudan.

Edited

Absolutely agree. Women and dc from Sudan should be a priority.
