What will Starmer do if Huntingdon...

Stabbing turns out to be terror related or in a similar vein to incident to recent incidents that were related to immigration ? We don't know the identities yet of the perpetrators. But the fact the Home Secretary is brought in to comment in tabloids and the discussion on LK on BBC today makes me worried its a possibility. The poor people on the train - I cannot even imagine .. ..Starmer needs to tackle knife crime as its rife. What is the answer ? When is there a tipping point ? I don't know but something must be done - I've never paid as much attention other than feeling so terribly sorry for any victims and families. Now I'm starting to get angry when I see anything like this

I'm glad that's the case for you, Lifecouldbeadream, but street crime, burglary, ASB, SA and thuggery among schoolchildren are all seriously up, where I live. And a lot of the online abuse isn't out in the open either.

People living in the 50s, 60s, 70s who are now deceased would be turning in their grave now seeing England today.
Everyday its something.
How many children did you hear about who were murdered at school by another pupil back then?
How many terrorist attacks did you hear of?
How many stories about migrant crossings did you hear of?
Hotels having to put asylum seekers up.
Having to hear that some of them have murdered people.
How many prisons were full?

Need someone with backbone to run the country.
It will only get worse if things dont change.

I take it you haven’t heard of Northern Ireland, or you simply aren’t bothered about what happened to people?

Piggywaspushed · 02/11/2025 12:27

Or indeed the 'Vietnamese Boat People'.

Tbf Starmer doesnt seem particularly interested in the UK either. He's never here.

You don’t think going abroad to negotiate trade and security situations is caring about the country? OK then

Shatteredallthetimelately · 02/11/2025 12:28

He's probably pissed off that he's being disturbed about the same old same old.

He'll talk some BS that he thinks will make Jo Public believe he's being sincere, but reality is he probably doesn't give a shit who gets hurt, murdered or raped as long as it's not members of his own family.

cottonwoolie · 02/11/2025 12:28

The biggest difference now is that it's all in the open and reported on 24hr news channels and social media constantly.

I think it's the graphic nature of the crimes and the amount of innocent deaths tbh,

Seeing some of what has been spouted on here is terrifying.

As an NHS worker I will be preparing job applications before the next election. I have no doubt that Reform will dismantle the NHS.

Btw I love your name @WeCouldBeNiceToEachOther !

and I’m also sure that Reform - despite all the noise they are making - have no better ideas of how to manage/ control/ stop illegal migrants. Unless we are due to see a huge wall running the length of the southern coast line in keeping with Trump’s Mexico border! And and at what cost and to whom…

Thanks!

it’s terrifying. Absolutely terrifying. Reform have no idea, but they continue their agenda based on hatred and division.

I learnt a new word only yesterday:

Anemoia is a neologism for nostalgia for a time or place one has never known, a longing for a past that was not personally experienced. It is different from nostalgia, which is a fond memory of one's own past.

Love this. Makes a nice and intelligent difference to the rest of this thread,

ParmaVioletTea · 02/11/2025 12:32

We don't know the identities yet of the perpetrators.

Just to stop the rabble-rousing: police have confirmed the perpetrators are English.

He still hasn't responded about the innocent dog walker stabbed to death in Uxbridge last week by an Afghan loony living in an HMO.

Why should he? Do you expect him to comment on every murder?

xanthomelana · 02/11/2025 12:33

Lifecouldbeadreamsweetheart · 02/11/2025 12:20

Exactly this. People unthinkingly say that present day Britain is some unprecedentedly dangerous war zone. It's nonsense. Crime statistics show that it's barely ever been safer. People forget the IRA, skinheads, unbelievable levels of domestic violence and CSA that just went unreported.

The biggest difference now is that it's all in the open and reported on 24hr news channels and social media constantly.

There definitely wasn’t a knife crime problem when I was growing up. I don’t remember my school having metal detectors because knives were being smuggled in, maybe I was lucky but I grew up on a council estate in a rough area without gangs and county lines.

Because all black men smoke weed 🙄

Stereotyping much?

It's a fact. A lot of white men smoke weed. A lot of black men smoke weed.

Cannabis use is disproportionately seen in the Carribean heritage population.

A lot of black British men and women of Caribbean heritage report cultural reasons for smoking weed.

jlooy · 02/11/2025 12:33

pointythings · 02/11/2025 12:24

But the perpetrators were not immigrants, so how is this relevant to this thread?

it’s more nuanced than that. Often second or third generation immigrants are living a very deliberately segregated life, with little time for the UK. When I worked in schools in Lancashire, I saw this with muslim students. They didn’t interact with white british students unless they had to. Their parents had very little english language skill despite having lived here for decades. It’s something we’re supposed not to notice or gloss over, but do so at your peril.

The IRA caused some graphic crimes and innocent deaths. As did groups like Baader-Meinhof in mainland Europe. The past wasn’t some safe utopia.

Weekly terrorist attacks in the 70s and 80s. Over 3500 dead. Armed soldiers on the streets. But apparently it was much better than now…

The majority of this was confined to NI so many in England won't have the awareness.

This is absolute rubbish. It was on the news every night. Bombings and attacks on the mainland were frequent and deadly. There were armed checkpoints in central London.

Plenty died in England too. And the scale of disruption was immense. A building I worked in was blown to bits ( on a Sunday so no deaths) , a colleague was very close to the Manchester bomb & one of my closest friends was working as temporary Xmas staff when the Harrods bomb went off. Most people in London in the 80s &. . 80s were impacted by terrorism.

Welsh has a very similar word - Hiraeth.
It’s generally applied a bit more positively than seems to be the case on this thread though.

You didn’t grow up in Glasgow then…

Why have policies that result in this then?

Barclays is forecasting that Reeves will be looking for £41bn in tax rises in the budget, up from their prediction of £26.5bn in September.

Edited

Because tax raises are the only solution to keep essential social services for the big majority of people to keep a fair balance in the social fabric in the country.

The majority of lower or middle income earners won't be affected by a new tax. It'll be the high earners, able to get tax concessions the majority can't claim against, that'll be affected.

Unfortunately you can’t say anything or have an opinion. It’s been going like that for a while. I suppose when stabbing and terrorist occur on a weekly/daily basis enough people on the left may feel this is enough. It probably be too late already. I wonder what history will say about this? I don’t think they’ll be calling the people wanting a protected border racist . May be these things happen so we can learn from history.

And yet here you (and scores of others) are, both saying things and freely expressing an opinion.
