I go to yoga classes. My DS does kickboxing for cardio and he wants to loose weight. My DD just uses her uni gym. What do you do?

Nothing! Well apart from walking at the weekend. In the summer I do more outsidey things. I do eat very healthily though.

EconomyClassRockstar · 30/10/2025 22:13

I walk! Every single day. Minimum of 10000 steps but normally way more than that. Also, pilates 3 times a week and pickleball 3 times a week. I don't work though so have a lot more free time that most.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/10/2025 07:46

Walking, cycling, running, weights are my staples each week. 2-3 sessions of each. Lots of functional movement.
Some swimming and yoga when I can fit those in too.

For getting fit, I'd recommend brisk walking and going into running and starting weights as the base fitness develops. I've had to do this twice after pregnancy/ birth injuries had me housebound for a while.

Weights are being more beneficial for my flexibility than yoga alone; strong muscles have greater range of movement than weaker muscles. I'm hoping that weights can reduce the risk of decades of osteoarthritis like my grandma and great-grandma.

As much as I do things like keep an eye on parkrun times and train for races, I also have soft goals like continuing to sit on floors and getting up/ down hands free.

Running, peloton (spin) and weights, I try and do at least one of these every day. I also walk the dogs but don’t include that in my daily exercise really. I used to run every day but it doesn’t feel as beneficial now to just run, plus harder on joints as I’m almost 50. My fitness and endurance is very good as I’ve been doing this for years.

I have developed disc issues I now weight train twice a week. Pilates once a week and swimming once a week. Plus physio stretches daily. I’m mid forties now.
in my twenties I would do a dance or Zumba class once a week
in my thirties i did yoga and aquafit every week.

@firstofallimadelight can I ask if the weight training has helped your back? I have back issues and I’m wary at the moment. I’ve had a few flare ups after reformer classes.

Yes definitely. I didn’t start until hospital physio sent me on a weight training class. I was too scared before but it really is helping. My back is stronger, less stiff and I’m doing dead lifts and twists so when I move about at home and work my back can take it . Ive had minor flare ups but nothing like I use to have.
I do pilates exercises but I don’t go to classes at the minute as I also worried about pulling something. My physio said to avoid knee to chest/happy baby positions where your lower back is curled.
The Mackenzie stretch and McGill big three are good for the back.

Pilates, weights and the odd walk

JustOnePersonNotAnOctopus · 01/11/2025 20:08

Walk the dogs every day, run or gym a few times a week, short yoga session in the evening when I remember. My schedule is too erratic to commit to classes/team sports.

I recently bought size 6 running shoes when I normally take 5.5. I wish I hadn’t, they are too big and give no support. They are asics and usually very good for running. I don’t know how PP manages with a size 7.

Berlinlover · 01/11/2025 20:09

Nothing but I walk everywhere so that’s enough exercise for me.

Lampzade · 01/11/2025 20:11

DickDewey · 01/11/2025 20:13

I do spinning, body pump and occasional grit. I also run on the treadmill at the gym and do yoga.

SpottyAardvark · 01/11/2025 20:16

I do a 6km walk, which includes a couple of hills, every day. I also get out on my bike a couple of times a week.

YelramBob · 01/11/2025 20:16

Run 6km every morning
2 x Pilates classes
3 x weight training sessions

Like PPs have said, for women (especially post menopausal) it's vital to do a combination of cardio, strength training and something for flexibility.

Nineandahalf · 01/11/2025 20:16

I do hyrox three times a week
Weights twice a week

I really need to lose some weight so I need to properly look at food - I'm not losing any weight at the moment.

KatharinaRosalie · 01/11/2025 20:19

weights. 2-3 bodypump classes and 2-3 times heavy weights at the gym. I run a bit but mostly because I have dogs and they love it.

Weights are so important and it's a shame to see that most women at the gym still head for cardio equipment only, or think walking around is enough to fight sarcopenia.

It's a throwback to the 90s I think, just doing cardio and nothing else. Or Zumba.

bumptybum · 01/11/2025 20:35

Get him to the gym to do proper heavy lifting. My body has never looked better and I’m in my 50s. Totally recomped my body shape. He will get the benefit of losing body fat and gaining muscle

Platypusdiver · 01/11/2025 20:41

God i feel tired just reading most of these exercise schedules. Great for those of you that do this much exercise, i would love to do some of these regimes. But it is intimidating to read. And has obviously scared off people - who I suspect are more numerous - that don't do regular exercise.

I am really trying to get into exercise and I really struggle with time and energy. I am a teacher.

During holidays, i can manage 5/6x weights at the gym, a run, yoga or a Tom Morrison routine (love him!) a week. I rotate through the activities.

During term time, I manage 1 session of something at the weekend. I do walk the dog everyday (10 mins to 1 hour, depending on energy levels). I also force myself to cycle to work sometimes (2x a month, weather depending). I know it is better than nothing, but it is not enough at all.

Honestly though, the only way i can do any form of substantial and "regular" exercise is because I get 13 weeks holiday a year. Also, dd is a teenager now, which frees me up.

StasisMom · 01/11/2025 21:14

Running, spin, walking and weights.

Clearinguptheclutter · 01/11/2025 21:23

Run three times a week. Though once or twice is with a social running group and doesn’t really feel like hard work at all. A group of ladies of a certain age having a plod and a chat!

BlossomingSlowly · 01/11/2025 21:49

Dog walker for a living but also run 3-4 times a week and try and strength train at the gym twice a week. I also do yoga but more for the stretching than the fitness to try and prevent injuries. I somewhat enjoy strength training and yoga but running has always had my heart. I’m a horrid and miserable person if I’m unable to run!

Siriusmuggle · 01/11/2025 22:07

Running, gym, weights small group PT and HIIT.

MostlyGhostly · 01/11/2025 22:11

Muck out horse and yard jobs 5-6 times a week: min 45 mins, max 4 hours on days off and weekends, walk dog for 1 hour daily, ride horse 1-3 times a a week ( not as much as I’d like, depending on time and weather)

Bufftailed · 01/11/2025 22:23

Two runs 5-7km, slowly, 2 strength training sessions in gym..loads of dog walking

JudgeBread · 01/11/2025 22:27

Until recently I walked 15 miles a day 6 days a week carrying a heavy bag.

Now I've had to replace that with alternating running and weights. Sometimes I can't be arsed doing either of those things and just have a boogie around the living room and call it a day. Sometimes I can't be arsed with that either and just sit on the sofa eating hobnobs and imagining I'm running 10k.
