Does anyone else count everything?

I count everything, not in seconds or anything meaningful just arbitrary counting. Just caught myself counting while I’m filling my mug from the kettle 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 I know it always takes 7 to fill my green mugs … is this normal do other people do this? It doesn’t impact my life remotely and I’m very chill person nice job lovely family etc no trauma… just thought maybe it’s not completely normal to count everything but maybe it is?

Umm, no I don't do that.

CalmShaker · 29/10/2025 20:05

And back in the room in 3 , 2 , 1

JDM625 · 29/10/2025 20:05

Do you mean like Rain Man? Are you ND?
No I don't.

Wallawallakoala · 29/10/2025 20:07

God I do this all the time, even when I really don’t need to. Scoops of detergent…1,2… slices of ham on a sandwich. Like not that I mind how many slices but I still count them. Even grating cheese. What’s that about!

Canopop · 29/10/2025 20:07

Hahaha the kind of responses I half expected 🤣

No I’m not ND in anyway. I just think it’s a quirk I’ve always done.

do you count stairs/steps at least when going up or down?

Always the steps.

Yes! I do it when grating cheese like there’s no need for me to count the grates 🤣 but it’s just what I do lol

In the dark on stairs I know then yes, so I know when I'm at the top/bottom. But on stairs I'll never do again, no.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2025 20:09

I sometimes count stairs (there are usually 13 on a 'standard' house).

Wallawallakoala · 29/10/2025 20:09

🤣 I’ve never heard of anyone else doing this. Normally get to about 22 with the cheese grating but again it doesn’t matter so much what the number is but maybe it is a bit odd that I count it?!

What do you think about on stairs then just ‘up I go dum de dum’ I feel like the stairs need to be thought about so it’s just nice to count them I don’t think I’m explaining it very well

@Canopop my adult child does this when they get nervous. I do it to get to sleep, Michael Rosen says he does it to get to sleep too.

If you feel ok about it and it doesn't intrude unnecessarily on your life, I wouldn't see it as a problem.

Aussiegold · 29/10/2025 20:11

Yep, always done it.how long to pour tea, steps to the end of the road, and definitely yes to how many ratings of cheese!
Some numbers are better than others as well, so aim for multiples of 5.
Not ND.

Wallawallakoala · 29/10/2025 20:12

I thought this was just a normal thing! now I’m thinking about it I wonder if it’s because I maybe think too much and it just focuses us on something? Hmm I don’t know it’s very hard to explain. I’m the same though and even in the car when I’m with the kids if I’m getting close to home I’m like counting out loud til we get home, normally only about 5.

Canopop · 29/10/2025 20:12

Yes I prefer evens and sets of 5’s too.

No it doesn’t impact my life negatively I just wondered if I was alone 🤣

But when do you think about things that aren't counting?! I'm thinking about what needs doing, mulling over a problem that needs fixing, calling back down to the kids...

ninjahamster · 29/10/2025 20:13

I do. I’m autistic though. I count streetlights when driving past them, for example.

I think about those things too but I find myself counting alongside like 2 thought trains

@Sillysoggyspaniel i think that’s it though because there is so much to think about all the time, it might be a bit of a break 😂

Isesgirl · 29/10/2025 20:14

All the time, yes. I have to drink in even numbers of swallows. The ideal number is 8, but two lots of 4 works too. Volume on ANYTHING has to be on an even number, despite that often being slightly too loud or too quiet, and I will count as I turn anything up or down. I could go on but I'm sure a lot of you are slowly backing away at this point anyway 😂

NuffSaidSam · 29/10/2025 20:14

I don't do this, but I'm interested to hear that you do. Aren't brains weird?!

BedlingtonFloof · 29/10/2025 20:15

I don’t, but I like to spot images in things. Clouds that look like dogs or swirls in the marble worktop that look like Elvis - that kind of thing. I think most of us have weird quirks like that.

Pinkladyapplepie · 29/10/2025 20:15

I do this always and always have done. I have always been really good at maths , good at seeing patterns love puzzles. I work things out in my head all the time too, like how many litresI put in the car how much I would save if I got fuel from a different garage. Sad really but I can't help it.
