Sad to see this news although she lived to a good age:-

Yes I was sad to hear this. I’m now at that age where lots of famous actors and singers of my era are dying. It’s a jolt of reality but always good to see people reach a good age.

SilenceInside · 28/10/2025 10:50

Ah, that is sad. It sounds like she was well looked after in her older age and as comfortable as she could be.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 28/10/2025 10:50

Reunited with her beloved Tim, loved them x

Me too.

Oh bless her. She will have been missing him, a partner with dementia who survives one without it is not in a good position.
Go well Prunella, lovely lady and wonderful actress.
And what a great name! Imagine calling your baby girl Prunella, there'd be a Mumsnet furore! 😂

YumYa · 28/10/2025 11:15

At the weekend dh was talking about her and Tim and thought she'd died. I said no she's alive.

Apparently she was watching Fawlty Towers the night before 🙂

mrswhiplington · 28/10/2025 11:18

I loved watching them together on their canal journeys. They were very funny and you could tell they really loved each other.

I'm thinking Prunella for my baby - surname a bit fishy.

RIP, Prunella, it sounds like she was very much loved by those around her.

thisishowloween · 28/10/2025 11:21

Oh, that’s sad.

Dollymylove · 28/10/2025 11:57

Rest in peace Prunella ❤️
Forever remembered as the utterly fabulous Sybil Fawlty 😆

LastHurrahs · 28/10/2025 12:01

That is sad. I liked those canal boat programmes with her and Timothy West pottering about. I do think it's very hard for the partner with dementia to survive the one without.

(I rather like the name Prunella, but it would need a surname that worked well with it, like Scales. Which was actually her mother's maiden name -- her birth surname was Illingworth, which works less well...?)

Thecarstairsitreallyhurtsmegirl · 28/10/2025 12:18

We loved the canal journeys as it was a delight to watch also Tim's devotion to Prunella was plain to see.
Loved her in Fawlty tower's when I was growing up.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 28/10/2025 12:18

She was thr e definitive Miss Mapp!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 28/10/2025 12:39

I hope she's with Tim again now.

Amazing actress, I saw her on stage once and she was mesmerizing. Also Sybille is one of the best characters that has ever been on telly.

LIZS · 28/10/2025 12:50

Sad but suspect her life had been very difficult since Tim died.

REP22 · 28/10/2025 12:56

Oh bless her. I remember meeting her backstage at a play she was appearing in in London. I'd just started rehearsals for playing a part in a Pinter play, "The Birthday Party", that the programme mentioned she'd appeared in. I told her and she immediately turned and called out "Tim! TIM!! This young lady's playing Meg!!" and up came her husband for a chat. They were both absolutely lovely, kind and generous with their time and their words.

Rest in peace. xx

So glad to hear that she and Timothy West were lovely people. Sad news, but she lived a long time with dementia, and the last year since Timothy West died must have been very hard for all of them. She had a wonderful career and seems to have been blessed with a very happy marriage and family life too. Great blessings. RIP.

Sunnydayze43 · 28/10/2025 13:22

Oh very sad.
I was thinking about Prunella about 2 weeks ago.
She was so loved by her Tim, and her family, what a delightful couple and family they made.
Loved the Canal Journeys series; the genuine affection, love and humour were so evident.
It's easy to imagine that her devoted Tim will be waiting for his lovely lady.
May they both rest in peace xx

Coffeeishot · 28/10/2025 13:25

Ah that is sad she seemed such a lovely woman, I enjoyed their barging programmes it was such comforting TV

Scrabsqueak · 28/10/2025 13:49

Ah, this one hits hard for some reason.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/10/2025 14:06

How sad. Poor woman had dementia for a very long time and then to be widowed as well. It's probably a bittersweet relief for their two sons. She left so much happiness and laughter behind.

In my head I heard that in the same voice as her shouting, "Matron, MATRON!" in the Tesco advert. I'm sure she was nothing like that character in real life.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 28/10/2025 15:27

Absolutely adored her in Fawlty Towers.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/10/2025 16:39

Fawlty Towers is my favourite sitcom by some way, and the contribution Prunella Scales made is no small part of why it's so brilliant. She delivered one of my favourite lines (from Waldorf Salad).

Other Lady: “Uh, excuse me.”
Sybil: “Yes?”
Other Lady: “Do you think we could cancel our fruit salads?”
Sybil: “Well, it's a little tricky, chef's just opened the tin."

That's the 1970s for you!
