What are AirBnB guests up to…?

Possiges · 25/10/2025 20:14

We have a self contained annex on our property and have been running an AirBnB. Two youngish men checked into today. I’d say late twenties or early 30s.

We live centrally in a lively city so normally guests check in and are out for most of the evening at the theatre or having a meal or attending a concert etc.

Today’s young men checked into at around 3 pm and since then they’ve left the flat 5 times, each for around 20 minutes a time. I only know this as we have an external ring camera at the edge of the property. What could they possibly be doing..? I can understand popping out for a food run or beer run. But 5 times…?

Also why check into an Airbnb and pay a premium to stay in a central location and not go out…!?!

Well OP - you just have to suck it up - ie not knowing, unless you ask the guests directly.

Excellent pointless thread though with some funny comments...

Yes it’s declared. Any more questions?

You don’t appear to have informed them that you are monitoring their movements, this violates airbnb policy.

shiverm · 26/10/2025 06:06

oh wow OP, you've just confirmed why I absolutely never ever would want to stay at an air bnb on someone's property/ at the end of their garden again. You've confirmed all my suspicions that the host spies on and judges the guest. How creepy!

Interested in this thread?

i have just stayed in an airbnb and had no idea the owner could be monitoring my movements - very offputting
that explains why i received an email after i arrived saying welcome
i did wonder how they knew

Left · 26/10/2025 06:16

Aw I think they’re on a romantic break and just nipping out for an occasional smoke/vape as others have said.

If I noticed an unusual pattern in guest behaviour I’d probably be mildly curious as well.

Ratafia · 26/10/2025 06:24

I don't think it's necessarily surprising that they aren't going out. I have been known to stay in hotels or B and Bs in central locations for work purposes, in which case I will probably stay in to prepare for my work meeting or whatever it is, or just to have some peace and quiet.

HumHU3 · 26/10/2025 06:32

I’d agree (this shouldn’t been a reply to the post saying wouldn’t stay next to a host’s) Stayed at a holiday cottage last year that wasn’t stated as being right next to the host’s own home (and photos were taken from an angle that hid their house). They were blatantly watching us and one morning came round awkwardly saying something about our dogs whining / making noise the previous day. This wasn’t true as I’d stayed alone at the cottage when the rest of the family left for a trip out, so knew there’d been no noise - but they’d obviously watched the cars leave, caught sight of a dog through the window, and assumed we’d broken their rule of leaving dogs alone. That and a few other comments made us feel uneasy.

Not so private with the OP spying on them and posting about it 😄

Quite!

DarlingJo · 26/10/2025 06:57

swingingbytheseat · 25/10/2025 23:13

They’re gay men, you usually find them in cities. Have you ever visited one ?

Hahahahaha! Oh god this one gave me a laugh. If you dare venture out into the big city, beware! That’s where the gays are!!

The image I have of you in my head.

OP, I don’t know why people are being so uppity about this. I’d notice the same people coming and going at those sort of intervals on my ring cam, and would probably wonder what they’re up to. I’d probably not post about it here though because MN is an unhinged place.
Also, as someone who stays in a lot of Airbnbs, if it’s one shared where the owner actually lives, I always assume there is some sort of external camera.

QuirkyHorse · 26/10/2025 07:12

Maybe they were going to a rave?....not a rave that was around in my day....I would describe it more of a DJ night.
Anyway, when my dd's go to them, they don't tend to rock up to them till about midnight or 1am ish.

Did they go out for a length of time later?

Thomasina79 · 26/10/2025 07:38

They are on holiday they can come and go as they wish. I think your actions are a bit weird. I would hate to think I am being watched all the time!

mydogisthebest · 26/10/2025 07:40

Chickensky · 26/10/2025 01:15

I'd agree with this! Why make a thread on your own Airbnb guests watching their every move?

She is not watching their every move. Some real idiots on here.

I too would be suspicious. They could be going out to smoke/vape but no one that I know that smokes or vapes does so for 15/20 minutes each time. More likely selling drugs.

Gibstub · 26/10/2025 07:44

If you are not comfortable with guests pleasing themselves what they do and when, then why on earth run an Airbnb? Loud all night parties I can accept, but not just coming and going. Put up or shut up as they say.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 26/10/2025 07:46

It's funny how people instantly jump to the 'spying' conclusion when you.are simply 'noticing'. I also have an annexe and notice strange behaviour.

A common one is people who drive 5 hours from London to a place that is often voted one of the most beautiful villages in the UK. They arrive, put all the blinds down and don't leave for 2 days.

I stayed at an annexe in Barbados recently and was telling the owner of this odd behaviour. He said it happens to him too! People arrive in a hire car, pull down the blinds and don't leave for 2 weeks!

nosleepforme · 26/10/2025 07:46

Um, yeah you’re entitled to the cameras but why do you care how many times they leave/enter? They’ve paid you, no?

KvotheTheBloodless · 26/10/2025 07:53

Dunno what your guests are up to OP, I'd be interested too!

WRT OP being aware of her guests' movements, that's entirely normal, what's she supposed to do, put her fingers in her ears and go "lalalala" and close her eyes any time she sees them? They're on her property!

We have Airbnb on our top floor, and I usually know whether they're in or out. We live in the Peak District, so most people come here to walk, climb, run, bike etc, or even just sightseeing, meaning they're out a lot. We have had a couple of groups who stayed in almost the whole time, though, which was weird - why come all this way to never leave the house?! Bizarre.

Elsvieta · 26/10/2025 07:57

Are they just smokers? Going out of sight of the camera each time, because they think, rightly or wrongly, that they're not allowed to smoke on your premises, even outside?

When I did this in airbnbs it was because I was homeless. Something told me it wouldn't be a good idea to let on.

Possiges · 25/10/2025 22:54

You do realise I’m not actually sitting here monitoring them, don’t you? And I’m not watching them in real time either. Do you actually know how a ring camera works?

Omg it's like these posters have never seen how a ring camera triggers your phone! Of course it's not creepy or weird to be slightly curious. Dear God, 20 years ago this would've been an amusing thread now it's outrage and snappiness.

Grumpynan · 26/10/2025 08:06

We have an abnb next door and I have to admit I’m sometimes curious about what visitors are up to , if that makes me a stalker nosy sad old woman then fine I’m happy.

some people do some strange things, one question I would love to ask is why oh why do they always have the front door wide open what ever the weather. It’s a strange house sort of sideways to our back garden so we can’t help put notice the door open, it’s the main door to their garden too. It’s a very old building c1700 so I wonder if it’s musty ?

we had a group come back a few times and they would set up cameras and all sorts. We were fascinated, in the end DH “bumped” into them, turns out they’re ghost hunters ! And they were adamant they got readings.

i would say to men together, well we have workers that are doing short term work locally and the company rent the place and put them together in one house. Could be a couple, or friends or family who knows the relationship. We have families who just don’t have the room for visitors to stay to rent next door as extra bedrooms. That means we have loads of coming and going’s from all family members. It could be a walk for a smoke, to call home, to pop to shops.

it is fascinating though the ultimate people watching from your own home 😂. And no I don’t invade their space or privacy, I don’t really care what they do and yes people do stay and I don’t even notice apparently a family stayed last week for 5 nights and I never knew !

Yes, similarly not getting the outrage here. I’m happy if there’s no secret cameras inside an Airbnb. But if I owed a property and saw this pattern of behaviour I’d be curious too. First thought was drugs like one PP’s experience.

Foundress · 26/10/2025 08:41

Same here @Grumpynan not an AirBNB but a holiday cottage next to us. I love people watching. Most of the guests are absolutely lovely we have met some very interesting people. Some of the guests do have strange habits for example lining up a row of empty soup cans on the outside window sill 😂. I guess we all have our own funny ways. If the occasional arsehole stays I am always very happy that they are not my permanent neighbour. @Possiges I don’t think you have done anything wrong. I think most people have a natural curiosity as to what is happening in their surroundings.

Scoffing at “fellow Airbnb host…declared… informed….”. Do you always take yourself so seriously? I’m imagining you marching around with a clipboard.

I wish I could warn your guests to get away from the creepy host.

Stay in a hotel then.

I wouldn’t like it either 🤷‍♀️.

I prefer Airbnb to hotels, but always steer clear of those attached to the owners’ houses because it’s difficult to relax.

I once stayed in an annex and they kept walking past the window and looking in. Might contact them and suggest a ring doorbell…
