What are AirBnB guests up to…?

We have a self contained annex on our property and have been running an AirBnB. Two youngish men checked into today. I’d say late twenties or early 30s.

We live centrally in a lively city so normally guests check in and are out for most of the evening at the theatre or having a meal or attending a concert etc.

Today’s young men checked into at around 3 pm and since then they’ve left the flat 5 times, each for around 20 minutes a time. I only know this as we have an external ring camera at the edge of the property. What could they possibly be doing..? I can understand popping out for a food run or beer run. But 5 times…?

Also why check into an Airbnb and pay a premium to stay in a central location and not go out…!?!

It would be odd not to notice unusual behaviour.

Thank you!

The other posters are from the “perpetually outraged and fuming” brigade - they are out in force tonight….!

I have never seen on a listing. We will watch your entries and exits and count them.

Person with external camera, has ability to see images from external camera. And chooses to whenever they want. Shocker!

If this wasn’t something you envisaged could happen when staying anywhere (or existing in the modern world) then I guess you should stay at home more.

I’m intrigued too, we also have an external camera and of course notice people
coming and going.

They're having crazy chem-sex all over your annex.🙈

I hope it’s this but he’s probably dyspraxic. Going anywhere with dh is like this. Arrive, realised forgotten charging cable, go buy one, get back with a four pack and realise forgotten charging cable, go back out. Come back realise he’s left his phone in that car, go to car to get phone, come back realise he’s hungry, go to get some food, come back, realise he’s forgotten his toothbrush etc etc etc. I can see how this could happen. It happens all the time.

If you stay in a hotel, you’ll be caught on CCTV in the entrance, bars, lobbies and corridors.
You will be on CCTV yes, but no-one is sitting monitoring and keeping a tally of how many times room 309 has entered and exited the hotel, then post about them on the internet for a bit of entertainment.

Stay in a hotel then
So, do hotels obsessively monitor they guests like you or do they not? You can't even get your argument straight, just admit you're a nosey cow lmao.

Counterargument, if you don't feel safe enough to be renting out your shed annex then don't. Stalking people on CCTV isn't the answer.

JDM625 · 25/10/2025 22:47

Given some of your answers OP, I'm sure you will blatantly just ask them when they leave what they have been doing- so let us know what is was.

MumChp · 25/10/2025 22:47

This is creepy.

SirChenjins · 25/10/2025 22:50

I reckon it's a boring fag or vape

MagpiesAreBastards · 25/10/2025 22:51

Can't be worse than someone I know who spotted his AirBnB residents focussing their high velocity rifle with night sight on the neighbours windows.

I’ve actually never spoken to any guest. Our paths don’t cross (they aren’t close enough for us to bump into each other) and I leave them well alone to enjoy their stay.

While I understand being vigilant I think it’s OTT to be putting so much thought into this, you know actually watching them come and go. It’s silly comparing it to CCTV because nobody is monitoring anyone simply coming and going on CCTV. If they aren’t doing anything disruptive or ‘wrong’ then you need to stop watching and give them their privacy really. And if you’re that concerned about randomers on your property while your dc are home then I’d suggest air b&b is not the greatest idea for you.

You do realise I’m not actually sitting here monitoring them, don’t you? And I’m not watching them in real time either. Do you actually know how a ring camera works?

Yes I know how a ring camera works. Presumably it’s going off whenever they leave? But regardless, you are noticing it. And you are thinking about it enough to create a post on MN. Which to me is a little bit odd. You choose to rent your property out to strangers for cash, it doesn’t really mean you’re entitled to know what they’re up to - within reason of course. If they are doing something illegal or damaging the property or whatever then that’s different. But leaving and coming back could be all manner of things, most likely popping out for snacks or having a smoke.

TeenLifeMum · 25/10/2025 22:58

I’d assume they forgot loads of stuff like toothpaste and kept popping to the shop to get things they forgot.

Counterargument 1: how do you know Nigel in security isn’t watching you….?

Counterargument 2: I’m actually not sitting by a desk monitoring them in real time. The Ring camera app records snapshots of movement. I just looked at the app and could see how many times they’d been in and out. It took all of 15 seconds of my time. Not sure that amounts to obsessively monitoring them….?

I never said I was entitled to know anything. I was just curious… I’m not exactly knocking down the door demanding they account for their movements…!

And I haven’t even got the Ring app set to alert. I opened the app once and saw how many times they’d triggered the camera. It’s really not a big deal.

OP posts:
Tartanboots · 25/10/2025 23:06

That all sounds very odd indeed. Maybe there are actually more than 2 of them and each person/ couple has only gone out once?
Maybe even swapping over once out of sight.. do they look the same going and returning?

Poppingby · 25/10/2025 23:08

I think it's a bit rich to call other people perpetually outraged and fuming when you are the one monitoring the movements of people who've paid you for a service and judging them. If you can't relax when people don't holiday like you would, don't have an Airbnb property.

A big enough deal to create a post on MN and become defensive towards anyone who points out it’s actually a bit weird and intrusive.

They’re gay men, you usually find them in cities. Have you ever visited one ?

Irenesortof · 25/10/2025 23:14

There are probably a couple surely, enjoying some private time together.

Who said they were gay?!?! Their sexual orientation never crossed my mind. Why are you making an assumption about them…?! Their sexual preference is entirely irrelevant.
